Can we Talk About Nick Bolton for a Second?
 

He is an absolute stud.

I saw it every week at Mizzou but even I'll admit that I didn't think it would translate quite this well, this soon to the pro level.

I mean he looks like Bobby Wagner out there and has completely changed our defense at the second level.

He's light-years better than Hitch and this defense is one really good pass rusher away from having a chance to be dominant.

It's been a joy to watch him work so far this season. So glad he's a Chief.

Good time to remind everyone that Hitchens is out of the league at the moment.

So we essentially went from having a guy off the Street to a possible Pro Bowler at the position.

He's a beast. Paired with Gay, Harris and Chenal. Wow we got some beasts at LB and they're young.

Love the guy so damn much. Only custom jersey I've ever ordered (back when you couldn't find a Bolton jersey).

I thought he was a 1st round talent but I'm always reluctant to say anyone will be a perennial pro bowler. That sure seems to be Bolton's ceiling right now.

If Mizzou fans hate a guy - don't give that much thought. We hate most of our players. But if we love a player, that's probably worth noting because we shit on just about everyone.

That 4th down stop he made was pretty impressive.

Yeah, he's amazing. So fun to watch play and you just know he's gonna smoke somebody at least once a game.

His instincts are off the charts. He's like computer AI that knows where the play is going in a video game.

And if he gets a hand on somebody they're going down. There's no missed tackles coming from him and he's not getting dragged down the field for extra yards either.

Our linebackers, secondary and interior d-line all appear pretty stacked. We just need 1 or 2 more edge rushers to go along with Karlaftis and we'll be set to have a top 10 defense.

He may have the chance to be the best ILB I’ve seen in a Chiefs uniform. He’s an elite tackler, he’s smart as hell, he’s strong. Damn

He’s also gotten a lot better in coverage. He also looks a bit faster this year. He’s not Willie Gay athletic but he’s more than good enough

The defense has been spectacular this season.

If the offense can get it figured out then we're going to be just fine.

That's partially why I'm not too worried after Sunday.

We'll get Butker back, I trust Mahomes and Andy to get the offense figured out.

But now I know we have a damn good defense.

This team is fine. And may be better than fine once we get rolling.

The past few years a running back like Taylor would've completely gashed us.

The fact that we were able to shut him down for the most part is so encouraging to me.

Our linebackers used to be a disaster and now they're arguably the strength of the defense.

We are not nearly the sieve against the run that we've been in recent seasons.

Even the non-KC talking heads talked about his stop of Taylor with his hands at the line.

He basically bench pressed him backwards. ****ing incredible.

I would love if our D could get pressure like the Cowboys did last night.

He's great. Loved the pick at the time and love it even more now. Immediately one of the best LBs in the league. There's been so many of these freak athletes coming out at LB doing absolutely nothing, and then there's Bolton - decent athleticism but off the charts smarts.

May get all pro this year.

I'll admittedly eat crow. I didn't think he was worth the pick and I'll gladly be called out for that.

His play on the field has already been well stated. I'd like to add that he carries himself well in interviews and speaks like a true leader.

This defense was punishing Colt ball carriers on Sunday and you gotta figure Bolton's play and attitude are a big part of that.

Most of the time LBer seem to take one year longer than they should to break through on those national awards (and then earn one more than they should on the back end).

But with Leonard missing the start of the season - the window could well be open for him.

I still don’t understand why Spags gave so many spaps and the green dot to Hitchens last year. Hitchens can’t even get a job this year. Our coaches are too loyal to veterans sometimes.

Bolton is going to get PAID. Love everything he brings to the D. Makes plays without bringing any extra attention to himself. If he's not already, he'll be the leader of this D soon.

He was the best LB in the SEC his last year in college. That should have told you something.

He was noticeably great on Sunday.

Being that good in college, especially for LB's, doesn't always mean success in the NFL. Bolton doesn't really have elite athleticism and there was a concern his game wouldn't translate. Not saying I agreed with it but that was the thought process going into that draft.

Him and Gay are a perfect example of needing to be varied in your approach to player acquisition.

You don't go strictly by measurables - you'd pass on Bolton if you did. And you don't go strictly off production - you'd pass on Gay. Don't focus entirely on ceiling or floor either.

You need to be cognizant of both. Sometimes you try to find combinations of those traits. Sometimes you try to find guys who stand out in one area or another. Mix it all throughout your draft. Take some high floor, low ceiling guys and vice versa. Take some guys who explode on tape and a few who show out on the stopwatch.

But you don't get tunnel vision. Don't get married to a set approach. There's a little luck involved here and the wider you cast your net, the more likely you are to catch what you're fishing for.

It's nice to finally have a BAMF at LB.

He was a player that you always saw that made plays in college against everyone. We got lucky he wasn't a winner in the underwear Olympics.

Ben Niemann did the same thing in college.

Again, I'm not saying I completely agreed with those takes but there were legitimate concerns that he simply wasn't athletic enough to be a premiere NFL LB.

Mike Rose is a perfect example. Twice first team All-Big 12, Big 12 DPOY as a Junior. He played downhill and aggressive but had some physical limitations.

But that's why you have scouts.

Completely unfounded. I'm sure there are a few idiot KU fans out there who can't seem to differentiate between college and pro sports, but I certainly wasn't one of them and would argue that most liked what they saw from Bolton regardless of who he played college ball for.

And you know what's great? I don't think that's a small sample size thing. Well maybe the sacks are.

But I said before the season that I think he has a 160 tackle season this year and everybody that plays in an IDP league should grab the guy.

This is sustainable. This is who Nick Bolton is.

Most people were clamoring this last year. We got better once those shit turds quit starting.

Very excited about this guy. He can be the new leader of this defense for years to come.

He plays with an attitude which I think is so important on defense. Great pick by Veach and our scouts.

And the best part? I never hear him on social media, never doing stupid shit on the field, or anything else. Just plays ball and goes home.

He's a ****ing beast. Out very own Luke Kuechly and then Gay can absolutely be a DJ clone. This could be the best LB group in the NFL.

Ekeler ran for 110 on 23 carries for a little context. I just wish this staff would trust the young guys more and let them take their lumps. Hitchens had no business being on the field last year, and it’s pretty telling that he’s a free agent at 30 right now

Dudes, we're lucky to have that hammer out of Mizzou. Best ILB we've had in red and gold since the great Derrick Johnson. Gay may be a close second but Nick doesn't have the off the field issues. That by itself is looming large.

Loved he was the guy who got the scoop and score. As a guy who specializes in doing the dirty work for the D, those players don't always get chances to shine - but damn, he's now found himself in three plays like that in his short career.

1. The game-swinging scoop and score @ Denver last year
2. The interception off of a ricochet to seal the game @ LAC this year
3. And of course, the scoop and score in THE SUPER BOWL this year.

It just always seems like Bolton is in the right place, which is a 180 from the 2020-2021 Anthony Hitchens experience.

What a monster we got. The last two drafts have been out of the park for Veach.
