What if QBs had to call their own roughing the passers?

I'm just having fun with this idea, don't take it too seriously. But how would it affect the game?

Was playing some pickup basketball yesterday and had this idea inspired by it. Obviously in pickup we call our own fouls, and you do it when you feel it's egregious enough to merit getting the ball back. You try not to do it too much, because you're going to piss everyone off, and you try to avoid calling it when it's ticky tack, because we're just trying to have a good time.

A few idiots in a basketball gym is not the same as millionaires playing for their livelihoods, but we do know that QBs need to have the respect of their locker rooms, and of course if you're a gigantic crybaby you're going to risk being an appealing $$$ brand. So perhaps that would have enough of a check on any impulse to call RTP any time they incomplete a pass. (Of course there would have to be a requirement that he have to get hit to the ground or something. I'm not a legislator.)

Maybe the "eye in the sky" can negate RTP from being called in the last two minutes of the game, and therefore leave that up to referees. I don't know.

jd1020 10-13-2022 08:04 AM

No.

I know that guys like Brady and Rodgers are out there saying how ridiculous these calls have been with a mic stuffed in their face, but compare that to the number of times they get up with their hands in the air directed at the ref.

DaFace 10-13-2022 08:04 AM

For a preseason game or whatever? Sure, it might work. But the higher the stakes, the higher the potential (likelihood) of abuse.

Can you imagine this in the AFCCG in the 4th quarter? Yeah, no. Let's not try that.

neech 10-13-2022 08:06 AM

It wouldn't work, hard pass.

Tommy Bitch... a morally bankrupt cheating fraud who is devoid of any ethical values getting to call his own penalties?

What could go wrong?

They'd do it every time they get hit on a big 4th down play or something.

Did you see Carr after his two receivers wiped each other out? He's making the flag throwing gesture when he was getting absolutely blasted at the time. He had no earthly idea but he didn't care - that didn't stop him from just begging for a flag.

QBs would be GIANT bitches but they'd do it at critical stages of the game.

Carr was claiming there should have been a PI flag -- that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking exclusively RTP.

Be honest: do you think Carr calls a RTP on the Chris Jones strip/sack?

I obviously don't know, but I don't think he does, right?

Oh I know - but he didn't have the power to throw a roughing flag. He was just gonna try to get one regardless of whether or not there was a penalty.

To answer your question - No, I don't think Carr calls roughing on the Jones strip/sack. At least not until coaches start to 'teach' their QBs to do so anytime there's a turnover.

Now a question to you - do you think Carr throws his own roughing flag on that 4th down play when Bolton blasted him as he released the ball?

The danger now is that QB's are going to start taking soccer dives to draw penalties.

It's not getting talked about, but Brissett took a big dive this past week that turned an incomplete third down pass into a brand new set of goal line downs.

I ... never said the Raiders would beat us? I did think the Bucs had a better than even shot, however.

You probably don't want to know how I feel about the Bills game.

This would never work just like it wouldn't work in the NBA... look at the players reactions on the field... rarely do you see the player admit they did wrong, very often they look shocked that they were called for a penalty. QBs regularly complain to the refs and most times it is not a legit complaint. There are exceptions to this.

If you want to make it better, just send the roughing the passer penalties to NY for review. It would at least put a check and balance system in.

On the flip side because Patrick Mahomes II isn't a pussy would probably never call a roughing the passer even if it was 5 seconds after he threw a missile launch 80 yards and it was a blow to the head and landed on top of him he wouldn't call it.

Rain Man 10-13-2022 09:53 AM

You can't use the honor system in a league that has tom brady.

PHOG 10-13-2022 10:48 AM

Tom Brady was KICKING AND SCREAMING this past Sunday over that non-RTP. He even had to go ask the ref WHO the penalty was on because he honestly didn't know. He should have been flagged for "unsportsmanlike girly wetting pants" before any RTP was even considered.

So to answer the question,
