At the halfway point of 2022, who is the best team in the AFC?

Time for our annual poll. We've reached the halfway point of the season, somehow. The NFC has had a lot of underachieving teams but the AFC has several teams with winning records. Who is the best team in the AFC? Who are the teams to watch out for in the second half? Poll coming.

mr. tegu 11-07-2022 10:20 PM

Chiefs. I wouldn’t love playing the Dolphins.

Jewish Rabbi 11-07-2022 10:24 PM

How is there a team included in this poll whose starting QB is Case Keenum?

To be fair, Case Keenum has played in as many conference title games as Josh Allen.

I got the Chiefs going 17-0 this year

Overall I'd say:

1. Bills
2. Chiefs
3. Ravens
4. Bengals
5. Dolphins
6. Chargers
7. Titans
8. Jets
9. Patriots

Generally speaking I think it's:

Tier 1:
Bills
Chiefs
Ravens

Tier 2:
Bengals
Dolphins
Chargers
Titans

Tier 3:
Jets
Patriots

And KC finished 6-2. That’s very impressive and goes to show how good this team is and how the preseason record predictions were so far off for this team.

Miami.

Beat Bills and Ravens w/ Tua healthy.

Tua is 6-0 in games he finishes this year. They are 0-3 when he does not start (or shouldn't have started and was carted out of)

Edit: their schedule includes 5 of the teams on the OP list so its not like they have had cupcakes.

Direckshun 11-08-2022 09:44 AM

I think it's the Bills, pending Allen's arm injury.

Chiefs are a heartbeat behind.

Ravens, however, could legitimately be 9-0 right now. I think there's a good chance they sneak up on the AFC in the playoffs this year. They're super good.

I still like the Chiefs and Bills over them, but we need to give them a closer look than we've been, so far.

HayWire 11-08-2022 12:41 PM

Not sure if that’s a real question or I'm just feeling pessimistic

I don't think there's much separation between a bunch of these teams. I would include Miami, Cincy, & Tennessee in the Tier 1 group.

Does KC beat the Titans if Tannehill was playing? They were lucky it was a struggling backup QB in that game.

Cincy was 2-0 against the Chiefs last year and there's reason to believe it will be another tough battle against them later this season as well.

Miami has 3 losses directly from Tua's injuries. They have beaten Buffalo & Baltimore when Tua was on the field.

ToxSocks 11-08-2022 12:55 PM

At some point we really need to start talking about the Jets and Dolphins. We've been locked onto the Bills for so long i feel like we're not considering other potential matchups.

Jets have a good defense but I just can't trust their QB at all. Their offense looked to be making strides but then Breece Hall blew his knee out. That guy looked like a superstar before he got hurt. He gave their offense an explosive playmaker, but to be fair they beat the Bills without him.

scho63 11-08-2022 01:03 PM

Chiefs/Bills are the cream of the crop - can go either way.

Titans have an incredible defense and if the rookie QB gets to Lamar Jackson level, watch out for them.

Jets are up and coming but need a few more offensive tools

Miami has weapons like crazy on offense but they let up a shit ton of points

Bengals getting healthy but they wobble

Ravens always dangerous but they have big let downs

Patriots are over achievers

Chargers are the Chargers

The rest suck

Any team with corners who can cover us in man and a Dline that can pressure with 4 should be a concern of ours.

I think it's been somewhat obvious now that teams are playing us differently without Hill. They're playing closer to the LoS, they're playing more man than ever before and they don't respect our deep passing attack like they use to.

And through 8 games now, it's been a struggle against good defenses. Aside from two games, nothing has come easy.

The counter to that obviously is to start hitting more shots downfield. But against a team with a good DL and good corners, that's going to be a real challenge as we saw against the Titans.

I feel like this season there's a philosophical shift on how we have to view these matchups.

ToxSocks 11-08-2022 01:07 PM

We have to reevaluate that Seattle matchup. They have a legit RB and run game, and a passing attack that likes to take downfield strikes off a real effective play action.

And the Broncos won't be as easy as we collectively think.

If you include Cinci, Tennessee, and Miami in tier 1 then I think you have to include Baltimore as well and I think that's too much.

It's football so matchups, day of the week, injuries, etc, all play a role in the outcome and any team can beat another.

Generally speaking, I just think KC, BUF and BAL are a step ahead of the others. The Bills have a top 5 offense and top 5 defense, KC has the best offense in the league, and I'm high on the Ravens because they just added Roquan Smith.

Miami in particular is an inferior version of KC. Their offense isn't quite as good and their defense is even worse than ours, Tennessee is a good squad but they're having issues at QB, and Cinci is missing Jamarr Chase for a while (and he may not be entirely the same when he returns).

If people are being honest then KC definitely loses to Tennessee with Tannehill playing. They barely beat Tennessee with Malik Willis playing.

Nah. Good try though.

However,

If Tannehill played with that bad ankle, then he definitely gets sacked on those two early drives in the first half. Malik with his great strength and quickness managed to escape both of those. Tannehill goes down easily for big losses if he's in there, no question.

Yea I was about to say Buffalo is about to play the toughest part of their schedule while ours is getting easier.

Stryker 11-08-2022 07:40 PM

I like Chiefs chances down the stretch. Ravens have injury concerns right now, so do Chargers. Jets, meh, not concerned. Bills, well, they lost to Miami and the J-E-T-S! Miami - this would be the concern in my book. Bears did give them a good fight though. Let us see how say, the next 3 weeks play out and revisit this OP.

Coochie liquor 11-08-2022 08:14 PM

Chiefs/Bills are close. But I’ll take the team quarterbacked by the guy who’s won an MVP and SB MVP.

Stryker 11-08-2022 08:26 PM

Bills are facing this gauntlet...

Vikings
Browns
Lions
Patriots
Jets
Dolphins
Bears
Bengals
Patriots

I feel they will lose a few of these games - trap, better comp or not.

It's funny how things change as the season progresses.

We should never look at the schedule before the season like it really matters much as we just have no clue from year to year who's gonna be good when you play them.

If you had told me thru 8 games the Chiefs are 6-2 I think we'd all have been fine with that and actually pretty happy with it.

That damn Colts game. Shit.

They should be sitting pretty at 7-1 with an eye on 14/15 wins.

Week 2, the Bills were just going to waltz through the league on the way to their Super Bowl win, only facing a minor road bump in KC for the AFCCG. Now it's like, shit, the Ravens, Dolphins, Titans, Bengals- any of those teams could get hot and make a run.

Also, the Seahawks have to be the biggest surprise. I had that one penciled in as the easiest W of the year. Now I'm thinking that one could be a dogfight.

Every team has a terrible loss every year. Last year we got the brakes beat off of us against the Titans.

All things considered I think we have a strong chance to finish 13-4. We only play 3 more winning teams and they would be:

-Chargers who are broken and look like a different team now
-Bengals who might not have Chase
-Seahawks at home

The rest is garbage. Texans, Broncos twice, a broken Rams team and the Jags

Here's the thing guys, there just aren't really blowouts in the NFL. A few, yes, but there's just not a huge separation in terms of talent and such.

The Chiefs should be favored form here on out. But there's a reason the games are played, so just put your head down and play it out if you're the Chiefs and come up for air at the end.
