My all-time Chiefs teams by round

For discussion purposes, here's my all-time Chiefs team by each round of the draft. I'd like to do free agent teams as well, but that would be a lot more work.

My rule is that I only considered their contributions for the Chiefs. I didn't want to pollute the team with a bunch of old AFL draftees who went to the NFL and never played for the Chiefs.

I do occasionally change a lineup a little if the reason is compelling, or I'll move a player's position slightly (e.g., ILB to OLB) if warranted.

Also, if a slot is blank it means we've never drafted someone in that position (or at some positions we didn't draft two).

A couple of points.

1. You have way too much time on your hands.

2. Why did you not put an asterisk and HOF notation by Patrick Mahomes?

loochy 11-16-2022 12:53 PM

Wow, look at those 5th round WRs:

RB/WR Carlos Carson
WR Tyreek Hill
WR Dante Hall
WR Joe Horn

That's some good value at WR, even if Dante only lasted a few years and we got rid of Joe Horn prematurely

loochy 11-16-2022 12:55 PM

And WTF?

RB/WR Larry Johnson

WR? I know he be cakn patna, but he not THAT cakn patna.

Patrick Mahomes II is not yet eligible, though I think they should make an exception.

Oh, that was just a placeholder because I thought in some cases I might go with a 3-WR set and in some cases I'd have two RBs.

Of course, then I ran into this situation and needed to fill the roster up with WRs. We had a couple of 5th round TEs who were serviceable, but I couldn't leave off any of these WRs. We'll see how fast Kevin Hogan can get the ball out of his hands.

KChiefs1 11-16-2022 01:18 PM

Wasn’t Kareem Hunt a 4th round pick?

Also Kelce. I think if both retired today they'd be HoF.

ChiefsFan63 11-16-2022 01:39 PM

That third round D would be very serviceable. Pretty respectable especially on the back end.

Well done!

kcbubb 11-16-2022 01:48 PM

Too many of those names are from the past ten years. That’s one reason the chiefs struggled for so long.

Urc Burry 11-16-2022 01:50 PM

The Ricky Stanzi disrespect

3rd round team is good, then you see the QB........

Brody Wa 11-16-2022 02:07 PM

I can’t see us winning any SB with Sylvester Morris starting as a WR on our team.

Otter 11-16-2022 02:09 PM

Wow, Junior Siavii makes the list.

Patrick Mahomes would turn him into a Pro Bowler.

I was really bummed when Joe Horn left. That guy was a baller. Didn't he bang Wilie Roaf's wife ?!?!?!

Otter 11-16-2022 02:11 PM

Wow, Junior Siavii makes the list at round 2. That's a tough pill to swallow.

I wouldn't argue with Turk McBride or Eddie Freeman in that spot. (I just got an eye tic.)

We drafted a guy named Jimbo Elrod?

He was drafted to be Willie Lanier's heir, and the two got into a locker room fight. Willie won and Jimbo was lost to injury, and he never did much after that. I've always been curious what actually happened in that incident.

Chiefs Lore by Rain Man.

I'd have to say our top 3 positions:

1. OL
2. RB
3. TE

Bottom 3:

1. QB (present company excluded)
2. DL
3. WR

Come at me bros!

Rain Man 11-16-2022 04:51 PM

Here's a fact I never knew, posted from the New York Times in 1976 heading into Week 5:

Willie Lanier is playing outside linebacker, with the rookie, Jimbo Elrod, in the middle.

https://www.nytimes.com/1976/10/08/a...on-sunday.html

So the Chiefs gave Jimbo the middle linebacker job and put Willie on the outside. I'm surprised by that move. But then Willie killed the usurper to his throne and apparently moved back to the middle.

I might put CB at the top of the list. We have good CBs all up and down the list for the most part.

Why Hogan over Stanzi? Was he technically active for more games or something?

I think the sheer buzz and controversy stirred up on CP should elevate him far past Hogan in terms of his importance in team history

How about the 3x+1 conjecture?

Better talking point.

That was a tough call, and I could go either way. Neither player was ever active on game day for the Chiefs as far as I could tell, so I picked Hogan just because he ended up getting one start for Cleveland and was a game-day active occasionally in three seasons for them, so I figure he was the better player of the two.

And yeah, Cleveland. I recognize that that's a hole in my logic.

I would too, but I'm not sure how to get a list of free agents without a ton of work.

Bump 11-16-2022 09:31 PM

cool list

I guess Chris Jones and Junior Siavi are the only DT's we ever took in the 2nd lol

I'll help. Here's one-- Len Dawson.

Okay, I think you can take it from here.

We also had Eddie Freeman and Turk McBride, so the #2 spot after Chris Jones is open for debate.

Same here. His last season in KC he was playing good. I never imagined that he would go on to have a hall of fame career for the Saints. But I did think at the time that he should have been kept. Seeing the career he had really poured salt in that wound.

In retrospect, Turk McBride clearly earned the #2 spot with Chris Jones. He got 10 starts in his two years with the team, whereas Siavii didn't start at all, nor did Eddie Freeman. McBride also had more tackles by a long shot. I'm going to edit that entry since I'm in error there.
