Late night bullshit: the Andy Reid highlight film.

Every now and again, I will see an Andy Reid playcall live and enjoy the creativity. Then I’ll rewatch it when the all 22 comes out and marvel at its genius.

We see player highlights all the time, but we never seem to see an Andy Reid highlight film: his most gorgeously scripted plays, his clever trick plays, the ones that lead to walk in TDs and all kinds of stuff.

What would you put in the Andy Reid playlist if you could?

For me, the plays that shocked me the most were those triple screens they used to run with Alex Smith. They’d fake a screen one way, then the other, then hit a TE or FB up the vacant middle of the field for yardage.

Pitt Gorilla 11-18-2022 12:14 AM

Backfield pirouette in the Super Bowl was a good one.

scho63 11-18-2022 07:28 AM

The Hungry Pig is still one of my all time favorites.

Chiefspants 11-18-2022 08:08 AM

The Fake Punt direct snap to Wilson to help upset the Falcons in 2016 (the Pick 2 game) was an all timer for Reid/Toub.

Going for it on 4th and 1 to put away the Browns in the playoffs (especially how they managed to sell that they weren’t running a play) was another.

WASP

I loved the completely unnecessary Dontari Poe touchdown pass, called just to rub the Broncos' noses in shit.

It wasn't a "genius" play call, but one of my favorites from Reid.

Playing center on this team has to be nerve wracking.

RealSNR 11-18-2022 09:18 AM

Shitty game and shitty memory, but that hook and ladder shit we did with Kelce and Tyreek (I think it was those two?) in the 2017(?) game against Dallas just before halftime.

It was so elegant. A Hail Mary situation where instead of being a numb skull and letting defenders knock the shit down in the end zone you put your actual best players in positions to do what they do best and work together to make it happen.

Just absolutely beautiful

DJ's left nut 11-18-2022 09:20 AM

Literally the entire 2013 season.

"Imma take fat Bowe, Donnie Avery, Dexter McCluster, Sean McGrath, Anthony Fasano, AJ Jenkins and Junior Hemingway, throw the ball 500+ times and end up 6th in the league in scoring...try and stop me..."

The shit he was doing that year was remarkable. You could find a dozen examples of pure wizardry where he was simply scheming guys open and creating points. The fact that he didn't win coach of the year that year is just ridiculous. Ron Rivera takes his own 7-9 team to 12-4 and gets the award. Andy Reid takes a 2-14 team to 11-5 and completely changed the tone of the entire organization - comes in 2nd.

The 2013 campaign was the best of his career, IMO.

I thought that was Hill.

Didn't they call it the Hill Mary?

EDIT: This is it, right?

Take a look at the last guy Tyreek jukes out of his draws. None other than our good friend, Anthony Hitchens.

RedRaider56 11-18-2022 09:25 AM

Did you see the Titans run the play against the Packers last night, where Tannehill looked to the sidelines like he didn't know what was going on and then the center direct snapped the ball to Henry?

Looked identical to the play the Chiefs ran last year with Mahomes and Kelce

It felt like Andy came here with something to prove after the narrative that the game had passed him (said by smart individuals like me) or that he needed a year off. He just coached his ass off that year and it set the tone for the years that followed.

the steam 11-18-2022 09:26 AM

13 seconds left, 99/100 coaches are calling something down the field. Andy calls a WR screen!!! Gets an easy 20 yac. That was the call as you will see the other 2 receivers over there immediately blocking downfield not running routes

We ran the same play against the Titans with Hardman at the end of regulation.

Maybe had a chance if we got one more block?

I feel like I never saw jet sweeps until Andy started doing it.

Y'know the funny thing about that Hill play is that it wasn't even incredibly well blocked.

The last 15 yards were just Hill embarrassing guys.

Give Tyreek that same blocking and I'm betting he houses it. Hell - try that play with Toney next time and see what he can do with it. On that play vs. the Titans, Hardman just didn't seem decisive and/or explosive enough to make that one critical move he needed to make to find a little more space.

RunKC 11-18-2022 09:55 AM

Remember Andy using this play design against NE and then within a week other teams like the Rams copying it?

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/swpD1-Pz9Nk" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Or this one that teams copied too:

But this was probably his best moment. The balls on this man for doing this in a playoff game:

I remember a report coming out just before the 2013 season of Reid addressing the team saying something to the effect of "Get ready, 'cause we're going to score a lot of points".

After that 2012 season I was skeptical, but the mad lad actually did it.

Hammock Parties 11-18-2022 10:06 AM

yeah most of that 2013 team's scoring was turnovers, field position and defensive scoring

We got some uncharacteristically lucky bounces that year, but Jamaal Charles was our only blue chip offensive talent. Outside of him, it was an Alex Smith-led offense featuring Dwayne Bowe, Anthony Fasano and Donnie Avery.

Reid's fielded top 10 offenses with guys like Junior Hemingway taking a high percentage of snaps. He's a wizard.

it's a misnomer to call it a top 10 offense

the chiefs were 21st in yards and mostly terrible throwing the footall

thanks to defense and field position and winning the turnover battle they were able to score more points than expected

that team scored ELEVEN touchdowns on defense and special teams

ThaVirus 11-18-2022 10:27 AM

Shit, in 2013 JC averaged 5 YPC and added 693 receiving yards on 70 catches. Almost 10 yards a pop through the air. 19 total TDs in 15 games.

Those numbers are inflated a bit by the Jamaalocaust, but damn. What a ****ing beast.

ping2000 11-18-2022 11:49 AM

His best highlight was his punt, pass, and kick competition.

We forget about those early Andy years because of Mahomes coming along (which is understandable) but you are so spot on here. I remember watching that 2013 season and just not even recognizing what the hell I was witnessing in comparison to the absolute coaching shit fest we had seen the 5 years prior. I never expected him to turn the whole thing around that quickly, it was truly football magic.

To take that team to 11-5 was nothing short of amazing.

ToxSocks 11-18-2022 12:13 PM

Booty bumping Philip Rivers.

Telegraphing Artie Burns on the sideline that he was about to get burned by Tyreek....and then burned Artie down the sideline. That was probably the most gangster shit i've ever seen a HC do.

Ah, yeah. I knew it was Tyreek who scored, but I thought it was initially a hook and ladder thing with Kelce. Nope. It was just a well-designed play that used total end zone coverage against itself. Not really any trickery on it. It was just "We've got Tyreek, and we'll take him outrunning all of your dudes at once over any of our receivers doing a dumbass jump ball"

Well, plus I'm not sure if Alex could throw it that far. Probably not, but you never know.

'18 season, Chiefs vs Steelers. Andy on the sideline directly in front of Tyreek Hill/Artie Burns as they lined up across from each other. Says something to the extent of, "alright two-five, we're gonna see what you got"

Then Hill burns him (for a TD IIRC).

Megatron96 11-18-2022 02:54 PM

The myriad variations of the shovel pass. Especially because for the rest of the league this play isn't a winner. It has about a 17% efficiency rating, iirc, while for the Chiefs it's about a 50%.

<iframe width="1229" height="691" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9Nt49vayKDM" title="KC vs. Pitt | 5 wide shovel pass" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Just football genius in motion.
