That black reporter on ESPN at the hospital has mentioned three times that he used to live in Cinci and lived “right down the street” from the hospital.

He also said that he had to vouch for Diggs to get into the hospital.

Dude, it’s not about you.

Chiefspants 01-02-2023 11:09 PM

Copying this tweet from the other thread. It's been the only reported update that seemed to be substantiated (by folks like Rapoport).

Crazy. Hope he can recover. Can only imagine being a family member or friend and seeing that happen live. Here is what probably happened:

Yeah and I'd say please no discussion of football implications. Can keep that in the GameDay or elsewhere.

This one hits hard. At fourteen my daughter was intubated in a coma for four days. I was fortunate to be walking back into her room when she awoke, caught my eyes and smiled. There are no words for that.

Be well young man, and from whatever power there is out there in the universe may there be grace to the family.

CPR may have saved his life. If that happened in front of me Im ashamed I wouldn't know what to do other than call for help. By then it may be too late.

That is exactly why more people should learn and keep current on CPR. It can and will save someones life!

It sounds like he may not have been in cardiac arrest for very long. Because of where this happened, in a place where there are doctors and paramedics and everything else at the ready, maybe he stands a decent chance of beating the odds.

T-post Tom 01-03-2023 04:21 AM

Seems as if he might suffer from Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Hereditary genetic issue that can cause cardiac arrest in young athletes. Only time will tell. Prayers to him and his family.

Sassy Squatch 01-03-2023 04:48 AM

Thankfully I'd say we're far enough out that any of those rumors of him being dead already are complete bullshit. Just hope they resuscitated quick enough that he won't be affected in any major way going forward

With the amount of people who take hit to the chest in all sports across the world I would not be surprised if there was another factor involved , congenital heart defects even in élite athletes go unnoticed fairly often.

njchiefs 01-03-2023 05:40 AM

To be optimistic, based on the fact that he received CPR so quickly and his heart rhythm was restored on the field … I bet he’s going to be all right. They will keep him sedated on the ventilator, possibly with body cooled down (hypothermia protocol) for a day to improve prognosis for neurological recovery. So we may not hear anything more today.

Monty 01-03-2023 05:58 AM

My DIL is an ER RN and her take is the EMTs did the right thing last night and saved his life. It’s now time to understand if there was other damage, so I’m hopeful that we we will hear good news today, but it may take longer.

The fallout over the biz side of things will be interesting to watch unfold over the next few days. The show must go on.

My wife is one too. She said they 100% have saved his life for now. 9 minutes is an eternity though and… we need to pray for him

Let’s hope he didn’t suffer any brain damage from being out prior to being resuscitated. Thank God for expert medical care on the sidelines.

morphius 01-03-2023 07:22 AM

Praying for the dude, his family and his team. Difficult to watch, and glad the NFL did the right thing in cancelling the game relatively quickly.

I'm not going to speculate, but to tell people they can't is a bit odd as long as they stay well within reason. Humans are known from a young age to ponder "why?", it is our nature.

From what I learned in CPR training is brain damage starts at 4 minutes. CPR was reportedly given for 6-9 minutes. Just a horrific situation.

I would assume 4min is without oxygen, and CPR does help get some oxygen to the brain which was started quickly , not sure about how the length of CPR and how much o2 left in the bloodstream etc would affect prognosis but everyone can be different.

Praying for him and his family. I can't imagine how hard that was for his mother to watch. Hopefully he can make a full recovery:grovel:

notorious 01-03-2023 08:01 AM

Give credit to the medical staff. That was a chaotic situation directly in front of 80,000 people, and millions watching at home.

Talk about performing under pressure. Anywhere and maybe anyone else and this would already be over. Kid has a chance thanks to them.

DrunkBassGuitar 01-03-2023 08:03 AM

It's mentioned in the OP about how to do CPR, if you're not working from home, the Red Cross will come to your work and do first responder training and I believe it's a free service. I've done the training, it's good and thank god I've never had to use it.

https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class

Also you can take free first responder classes from the Red Cross and they go over things like choking, CPR and using an AED. My parents both did it when I was a kid because we had a pool, thank god my dad never had to do CPR on anyone since he popped the arms off the mannequin when he was practicing chest compressions.

Peter Gibbons 01-03-2023 08:04 AM

This has been just awful to watch unfold. Living in Cincinnati, I can tell you that the UC Hospital is the top trauma unit in the region so he should be getting the best care available. Hopefully this coupled with the fact that he received immediate medical treatment will allow him to pull through without any long term effects.

If good quality CPR was given as it probably was the length of 9 minutes CPR doesn’t really indicate anything other than they were trying to get him conscious and restore his heart rhythm and it doesn’t automatically mean he was suffering brain damage or will have any. They key is how long he was out before.

Him being in critical condition right now is not an indication of severity of the cardiac test either as it’s a designation given to anyone intubated and in the ICU.

Thank you. I don't think people realize that the time elapsed BEFORE CPR is initiated is when the brain damage occurs. Not DURING CPR. CPR keeps the blood and oxygen flowing thru the body while trying to restart the heart.

TLO 01-03-2023 08:21 AM

The medical analysis from the OP matches up well with a lot of the speculation from people in the know were discussing in the GDT last night. Such a freak type of thing to happen. I really wish I hadn't seen it live, and on a regular Monday night game, I probably wouldn't have.

I don’t know if it was mentioned in the GDT, but do we know how much time passed from the time he collapsed until they began CPR? I was watching on and off and turned the game back on to see an ambulance on the field and had no idea what had happened.

It was within a minute or two if that. Medical staff were on the field within about 20 seconds assessing him. I would imagine it didn't take long for them to figure out he wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse.

Wife who works at KU where all the sickest go (CRNA and former neuro ICU) was spot on last night so you can take this as truth. Says they probably did scans last night which can reveal potential physical damage but that they won’t really know how his brain is impacted until they wake him up, which she thinks will be today, and they’ll wake him up slowly.

Says if no damage he will basically just be fine when he wakes up as far as brain activity goes. But says even then would need some heart tests, procedure maybe, pacemaker, etc. Also says worst case scenarios are still a possibility for when he wakes up such as paralyses, severe stroke effects, etc. but that if he was being given good CPR acted on quickly these things are greatly reduced as possibilities.

Thank you so much for all of your updates and info. It’s been invaluable to many of us.

I keep visualizing an AP photo of him sitting up in his bed smiling, giving a reassuring thumbs up while surrounded by hospital staff, family, and/or friends/teammates. It's all I see.

Hmmm. Not much to react to there. You can make some conjecture about it, but too much is unknown.

Damn. Was hoping for/expecting something a bit more positive than that.
