Movies or TV Shows you've NEVER watched but everyone else has

A short time ago someone was asking about watching shows and when I told them, "no I've never watched that", they were apoplectic as if I had just killed their kid. It stunned them.

The movie was "It's a Wonderful Life." I have nothing against it and I watch plenty of black and white movies but I have never had a desire.

It made me think of others and what blockbusters people have assumed you watched. ( I can say 99% of the people who never saw the Godfather are women)

It's probably grown a lot since of all the streaming shows now for people who don't have certain subscriptions.

Some others that quickly come to mind:
1. Game of Thrones
2. The Walking Dead
3. All the Harry Potter franchise
4. Citizen Kane except small parts-didn't interest me
5. Gone with the Wind
6. Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul (However I plan to eventually binge both)
7. Vampire related movies after "The Lost Boys"
8. Schindler's List
9. Saving Private Ryan

That has happened to me more than once for Ghostbusters. Still have never seen it.

Since the end of Person of Interest, I've only watched two new television series, the Jack Reacher series on Amazon, and All Creatures Great and Small on PBS. I'm also still watching the Doc Martin series as it comes along.

Outside of that, any post-2016 TV series has gone unseen by me.

Jenson71 01-07-2023 12:27 AM

Found on wikipedia, the highest grossing movies of all time, adjusted for inflation, are:

1 Gone with the Wind $3,922,000,000 1939
2 Avatar $3,505,000,000 2009
3 Titanic $3,260,000,000 1997
4 Star Wars $3,221,000,000 1977
5 Avengers: Endgame $2,960,000,000 2019
6 The Sound of Music $2,697,000,000 1965
7 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial $2,634,000,000 1982
8 The Ten Commandments $2,493,000,000 1956
9 Doctor Zhivago $2,363,000,000 1965
10 Star Wars: The Force Awakens $2,330,000,000 2015

I've seen 1, 3, 6-9.

HemiEd 01-07-2023 08:00 AM

Cool thread idea!
:
1. Game of Thrones
2. The Walking Dead
3. All the Harry Potter franchise
4. Kardashians
5. All but the first Star Wars
6. Any Sci Fi show, if one I am watching starts that shit, I hit eject, no matter how late in the show. Most recent example would be "significant other"
7. Vampire related movies after "The Lost Boys"
8. Any horror show or movie
9. CSI after the first season, none of the offshoots
10. Blacklist after the first two seasons
11. Any daytime soap

Holy crap, you are in for a shocking revelation!

Everyone now drinks whiskey neat, no matter what the time of day.

Like the NFL, most actors/actresses are now black with half the marriages being interacial.

At least one gay/trans situation in every show, in fact, if Ozzie and Harriet were done today, Ozzie would cheating on Harriet with a guy and Ricky Nelson would be a girl trapped in a male body.

scho63 01-07-2023 09:09 AM

Office and Titantic for me also.

CSI maybe 2 or 3 times when nothing else was on.

I hate being told current movies had these HUGE incomes. That is because a ticket is massive.

When the first star wars came out, tickets were 5 or less. I remember when a movie was 2 for adult and 1 for kids.

Megatron96 01-07-2023 11:25 AM

Lost - watched the first two episodes with my gf, couldn't get interested in it.

Any of the talent shows, ie., AGT, TV, DWS, etc.

Any reality shows outside of DC/GR

TWD - been told I'd like this, but haven't gotten around to checking it out

Breaking Bad - another one people tell me I'd like, maybe this year?

24 - watched three episodes; god what a terrible show

Jaws is at #13. Here's the remaining top 30 can be found here: https://www.yahoo.com/now/30-highest...162231238.html

of which, I've only seen 6-7, including Jaws.

Sound of Music: it's the kids, isn't it? The smallest ones have only minor roles, with the teenage love story being the main focus amongst the kids. The movie is terrific, though if anyone is put off by musicals in general, I can't imagine this would be an exception. At first blush, it may seem like a rosy, feminine, overlong affair, and to an extent, all of that is true, but it also has Salzburg, Nazi-intrigue, a thrilling climax, and so many iconic songs (the least of which is probably the title song).

Frazod 01-08-2023 12:43 PM

I don't generally watch shows about drugs or criminals. Movies are fine, but to watch a series that goes on and on, I just don't care. As a result, I've never watched shows like Breaking Bad or the Sopranos. Just not my cup of tea.

And there's only one example of this that I can thing of, but I don't give a **** about degenerate gamblers, either. There was a show on HBO several years ago called Luck, about degenerate gamblers betting on horse races. I made it through about half of the first episode.

And if a show is set in Chicago, or about lawyers, I'm not watching it. Because I worked in Chicago for lawyers for decades, and **** Chicago and lawyers. I guess the only exceptions to this are old Law and Order episodes and Married With Children.

I don't mind SOME musicals, particularly historical sweeping epics like Les Miserables and Miss Saigon. I've seen Les Miserables several times live. Actually saw Phantom of the Opera in a front row seat on Broadway. Sound of Music might be something I'd enjoy, but I don't really have any particular desire to do watch it.

Highly entertaining show. I certainly understand it's appeal and ranking in modern television lore but I've never considered it one of my favorite shows ever. Maybe sneaking into my top 10.

You gotta pay attention, so watch it with no distractions. I know that can be said about many shows. But The Wire doesn't have main characters. Technically, the main character is the city of Baltimore, but it all ties together so perfectly. You'll have 10+ characters that are your favorite by the time it's all over.

The Wire is a tough one. I tried a couple times to get into it only to lose interest.

I didn't stop but I definitely remember having to force myself to stick with it for a few episodes. Glad I did!

Honestly, that is not uncommon anyway. I actually did stop watching Game of Thrones after four episodes or so. I only picked it back up because people raved about it. Glad I went back to that one too.

Weird how that works though..

TinyEvel 01-09-2023 02:21 PM

Lord of the Rings series.
All Marvel movies except for Iron man.
Top Gun.
Meatballs.
Stripes.
Cheers.
Miami Vice.
Law and Order.
Any "Chicago" TV drama crap (Chicago hope, Chicago PD, Chicago fire. Probably the most popular and most garbage/cheesy fifteen minutes of TV I tried to watch in a long time. After a few minutes I thought it was a parody show like Reno 911.)

Pretty sure there's plenty more. I think for me, if something is mainstream and popular, I just have an aversion to it. Like, I'll never be able to match the fanboyism already out there so I for too reject it.

Same with bands. I dated a Girl into the Grateful Dead who wanted me to go to a dead show with her and I was like "nope."

Thankfully, I came around on Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Love both.

Pretty common response for most people. At least on first viewing. It's an abrupt shift of focus with all new characters and the people/story from Season 1 going to the backburner, temporarily. If you can't tell by my profile pic, it's my favorite season :)

I couldn't get into SoA either, even if Katey Sagal tripped my trigger in that show (as well as Maggie Siff).

Listen to me here - you need to give The Shield a go. It's been a few years since I've watched it, and I'd be willing to bet it's a touch dated now, but you have to do this. So, so worth it.

The Wire is my #1, with Sopranos a close 2nd.

As others have said, you gotta get through the first 4-5 episodes of The Wire to get a feel for who everyone is.....lots of characters followed throughout that series.

I couldn't get into SOA, I should probably give it another try, but I struggled.

Didn't get into the shield.

But seriously, do the Wire. You'll laugh at some of the technology, but the interest isn't in the procedural, it is the story, and it might be one of the best TV shows ever.

Sopranos I only watched 2 years ago, and once I got engaged I was all in. But trying to see the thing objectively, if I didn't consume it, I would have lived a lesser life, but it didn't carry nearly the weight or power that The Wire did.

I'd recommend both, but if you only do 1, I'll die on the hill of the Wire.

Pablo 01-10-2023 06:33 PM

I've never watched a full Star Wars movie and I never will if I can help it. Don't care about space queer stuff and honestly the huge fans are such losers I've got no interest in being part of the club.

No to SOA or Yellowstone because I don't care about biker or yeehaw soap operas.

Those are the only big, big ones in this thread that I know of.

Never saw The Wire or The Sheild probably never will not because they aren't good but because its old dated TV.

Seen some of the first seasons of Sopranos gave it up. Network 1 hour TV with too many commercials.

Tried to like Sons of Anarchy but the head of the Anarchy gang every time I saw him I saw the beast from that stupid show Beauty and the Beast. Couldn't take it seriously.

:spock: Sopranos was/is on HBO/HBO Max. No commercials.

Give the wire a look. It’s not about the procedure, it’s about the story. Sure some of the wiretap technology is out of date but who cares? That’s like saying the drapes in Citizen Kane are out of date. Not worth watching. Just watch it. Interestingly the same dudes made a limited series called We Own This City which has an incredibly similar feel about the corruption in policing in Baltimore. That is a true story the Wire is not, but it just as well be a sequel. The Wire is really good.

Yeah I didn't subscribe to HBO back when it came out. I think when I started it it was through Hulu which had commercials with subscriptions.

May give the wire a chance as I see Wendle Pierce is in it and I like his character in the Jack Ryan series.

SOA is entertaining, along the lines of Breaking Bad in my opinion. It's much more glaringly unrealistic, but still full of action and doesn't require too much brainpower.

You're speaking my love language on The Wire. There's just no other show that touches it, although Sopranos is excellent in it's own right. They are in fact probably my number 1 and 2 shows of all time. With The Leftovers right behind or maybe interchangeable with Sopranos. If you haven't seen that, give it a shot. You REALLY have to make it through the beginning half of S1 to get hooked with The Leftovers as it's such a different show and takes quite awhile to catch hold. But man....nothing else I've ever watched has ****ed up my brain as much as that show did.

S1 of The Leftovers was an absolutely brutal slog only rivaled by Season 1 of The Expanse. Couldn't make it through, and after watching Episode 1 of Watchmen, I've decided I simply despise Damon Lindeloff.

:) :) :)

I can definitely appreciate that take. Calling it a slog perfectly encapsulates my feelings as well the first time I watched the series. I feel like by episode 6 or so it heated up for me and the rest that followed was excellent. But....I was rather close to giving up as well.

A bunch of people who are frequent posters in the media center haven't watched some of the greatest movies in history, while watching, and celebrating, all kinds of crap. Seems like something that should be remedied.

I never understood the obsessions with Star Wars.

If it's popular culture, i try to watch it to see what the fuss is about.

Because of this, i've seen most of the Star Wars stuff. All of the movies. Most of the shows.

I don't get the obsession either. I mean, i enjoy it for the most part. But it's defeninately a cheesy, garish franchise.

I saw the first three movies at the perfect age. I was 14 when the first one came out and I think the last one came out when I was in college. They were amazing at the time, particularly the first one, because science fiction movies had always been terribly made and produced up to that point.

We then had a 20+ year gap before other Star Wars movies were produced. I watched the first couple and gave up because they were not entertaining to me. But I suspect that a lot of people of my generation indoctrinated their kids into the franchise just because the first three movies (especially the first one) were so strong.

Rain Man 01-11-2023 04:20 PM

As for my movie/TV show gaps, I've never had HBO so I've never seen any of the shows that appeared on that network. That extends to other nontraditional networks as well, so I haven't seen most of the biggest series of the past twenty years, like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Oz, Ozark, Game of Thrones, The Wire, Six Feet Under, etc. Nary an episode of any of them.

I've seen almost none of the classic Black and White movies because frankly I think the acting is not very good in most of them.

I've never seen the Matrix series in the modern world, and haven't seen any of the James Bond films of the past 15 years.

In general, I guess I just don't watch many TV shows or movies any more. The only TV shows that I've watched that have been produced in the past 10 years or so are Arrested Development, The Good Place, Always Sunny, and Big Bang Theory.

Oh, mylanta, just no. i tried to watch one of the HP movies; no idea which atrocity i was forced to watch, one of the first three I think, but dear god, I'd rather watch the SW prequel movies before ever subjecting myself to another HP movie.

Yeah, I went ahead and finally read the books so my daughter and I could talk about them.

I didn't hate them (the first 2 were pretty juvenile and man the last one was just BAD. Mediocre writing and just awful storytelling; really a poor effort by Rawling).

But while the books are plenty tolerable, those movies are BAD. Just the way they're shot is awful. They tray to create this sort of faux ominous feel through weird color palates and camera movements.

Those are one of the few movies I've ever hated not for WHAT they showed but HOW they showed it. Make those movies without trying to use shooting technique to cheat your way to some sort of foreboding quirkyness (which basically exists in the story anyway) and they might be pretty decent.

But those movies are baaaaaaaaaad.

Have you watched Hunger Games?

I've seen about 4 seconds of HP and will fully cosign your "they're shitty" position, but Hunger Games is super bad.

It was (though on a rewatch a few years ago, I found it quite a bit better), but S2 of the Leftovers is without a doubt one of the best seasons of television ever made.

Other than a few episodes of the Sopranos here or there, I've never made the time to watch any of these except The Wire.

Agreed, it's easily one of my top shows of all time though I'm not actually sure I can or want to go back to the Leftovers any time soon either as it is so affecting. You have to be in a certain state of mind to be able to handle a lot of it.

The Wire is certainly up there for me as well. Been about a decade since I saw it so it might be time for a rewatch.
