I like this honor even better

Made it onto the first ever player voted All-Pro team

DJ's left nut 01-12-2023 03:51 PM

I mean it's really just him, Parsons or Nick Bosa, right?

Am I missing anyone?

Really feels like he oughta win it but I'm secretly hoping it's Parsons so we can maybe avoid giving him Aaron Donald money...

Hydrae 01-12-2023 03:56 PM

So, we may have both the MVP and the DPOY on this team? Excellent!

Wisconsin_Chief 01-12-2023 03:56 PM

Imagine if Mahomes wins MVP and Jones wins DPOTY. Has that ever happened in history?

God it would be awesome.

Ass, cash or grass.

There are no free trips.

Seriously, it would be incredible.

Bosa did have 18.5 sacks, hard to see him not winning it especially with the media being unable to stop gargling the balls of everything involving the 49ers. Jones will certainly get some votes, though.

dirk digler 01-12-2023 04:00 PM

I am kind of shocked. I thought Bosa was a lock\no brainer

InChiefsHeaven 01-12-2023 04:01 PM

Wait, I thought PFF sucked though...

This isn't the 'real' DPOY.

It's the math DPOY.

I feel like Bosa's probably in the driver's seat as well. 18.5 sacks is an easy sell and being the most important player on a 13-4 squad is going to stand out more than being the 3rd most important player on a 14-3 squad.

But Jones has a better argument for it than many pundits would have you believe.

The guy signed for less than Frank Clark after Frank had sucked shit and then he signed after Buckner and took less than him. He wants an extension, but I don't think he's going to demand being the highest paid defender in history. Aaron Donald is the only the defender to have over $30 mil in AAV. No way he demands that. I could see him asking for $26-$28 mil a year which puts him at top 3.

Maybe see if he would take less AAV for an extra year. I'd like for him to retire as a Chief and DT's age pretty well and Chris has stayed pretty healthy overall.

I understand figured that was a lock too as well as any other publication giving out awards. Bosa dominated this year.

Its not great with positions that have more variables and get wonky with there weird fake stats, but they are pretty good with d line, pass rushers, and o line.

He didn't really take less than Buckner.

Oh sure, that phony AAV stuff says he did, but AAV isn't terribly relevant when discussing contract 'value'.

Jones took less in overall AAV but he also got more in practical guarantees. A LOT more, in fact. Jones deal had about $60 million in practical guarantees as opposed to Buckners at about $45 million.

And at the time both guys signed their deals, they were seen in a virtually identical light.

Buckner set the market by signing first, Jones signed a deal at market that was structured a little differently than Buckner's was and traded a little in top end for a lot in additional guarantees.

Look at it this way - at the end of this season the Colts can cut Buckner and have paid him 3 years, $56 million with ZERO in dead cap money. Meanwhile if the Chiefs cut Jones this offseason they'll have paid him $61 million AND still carry $7 million in dead cap.

Jones didn't do anyone a 'solid' - he traded a few million bucks at the back end of the deal for a few million bucks in the first 3 years of the deal. In the world of NFL contracts, Jones has a more valuable deal than Buckner got. And in 2020 Jones was not an obviously better player than Buckner.

Jones isn't gonna take a haircut here, fellas. He didn't before and he's unlikely to do so this time around.

RunKC 01-12-2023 04:15 PM

He’s great but let’s be honest here…Nick Bosa is the best defensive player in football

Guess I should have looked a little more into it. Well hopefully he'd be fine with taking less than Donald.

Nick Bosa is a stud, but there are a lot more Nick Bosa type players, than there are Chris Jones types. Interior pass rushers are more valuable and disruptive than Nick Bosa type edge rushers.

ThyKingdomCome15 01-12-2023 04:54 PM

Wow, I'm surprised but I'm not. The man deserves it. Hopefully the AP panel sees it the same way.

Are there, though? Because a "Nick Bosa type player" and a "Brian Burns type player" are not the same type player.

I mean you've got Bosa/Garrett/Parsons in that tier. Maybe you put Crosby in there as well.

At DT you have Donald, Jones, Dexter Lawrence really involves in this discussion at this point and I'd say Quinnen Williams probably does as well.

I think when you're talking the elite of the elite, you're looking 4 deep at both positions. And when you start to get to the Hendrickson, Sweat, Allen, Reddick sorts of players at DE you can counter that with Heyward, Buckner, Simmons, Allen at DT.

They're pretty comparable in terms of scarcity/tiers, IMO.

smithandrew051 01-12-2023 05:30 PM

Hard to imagine how a dude that size can be so explosive with that giant anchor between his legs.

I mean in history. There aren't near the amount of elite pass rushing D Tackles as there are elite edge rushers.

Also getting an elite pass rush from the inside is more valuable than an outside rush. An interior guy collapses the pocket and leaves the QB pretty vulnerable.

History doesn't mean much in a snapshot, copycat league, though.

I mean we'd immediately call Reggie White more like Bosa but I think Reggie would almost certainly be a DT in this era. Deacon Jones likely would've been. Hell, Chris Doleman probably would've been. You can really kinda look at John Randle as the 'transition point'. In the mid 90s, Randle moved from end to the interior. And it was less that Randle changed - the game did.

Before that, if you could rush the passer, they put you on the edge because they needed wider bodies for the interior to clog the run. And the quick passing game wasn't nearly as much a thing so edge rushers could get there in time if they did their job. In the modern era, a lot of those edge rushers from the 70s, 80s and even 90s would be moved inside, IMO. On the flipside, take Chris Jones and put him in 1984 and I am almost positive he'd be playing DE.

It's just a different league than its ever been.

Reggie would be whatever he wanted to on the DL, that man would be a HOFer at any position on the DL no matter the alignment

I read on ChiefsPlanet that he disappears in games and isn’t any good.

i know I'm a homer, but I really think CJ is going to have himself a great playoff run this year. i think this is finally the year. There's several reasons, some of them have to do with matchups, but really I think it's all about his supporting cast. i think this is probably the best supporting cast he's ever had on the DL, and I think that's going to make the difference. He's going to steamroll fools next weekend.

It’s incentive to max his deal so he’ll play out. If he doesn’t then you can more easily persuade yourself into a tag and trade scenario.

Rasputin 01-13-2023 12:13 AM

At mid season I said Chris Jones was having himself a HOF kind of year.

Are we sure Parsons is in that league with those guys?

The best man in my wedding/best friend has always been a huge Cowboy fan so I've always been a secondary follower of them. He's really disappeared down the stretch here for them. I dunno if he's hurt or what and I'd obviously take the guy but 1.5 sacks over the last 6 games coming down the stretch here.....I dunno.

Looking at it from 10000 feet though, shit he's a 13 sack a year guy. Yeah, he's there. I'm wrong.

Carry on.
