Chargers fire OC Joe Lombardi
|
No Sean Payton for LAC. Ha!
|
You pretty much knew that was a foregone conclusion once they announced Staley was coming back.
You couldn't bring back that offensive coaching staff with the same HC... |
They should hire Todd Haley to replace him.
|
They'll be the preseason AFC West champs no matter who they hire.
|
I'm just thrilled they're keeping Wile E. Coyote as their head coach. I love that guy! LMAO
|
Justified. However Staley deserves to be fired as well. Comes down to money and Spanos isn't going to spend.
|
I miss seeing games on TV in San Diego. Plenty of sun. The field was pretty. Now they play in that architectural graveyard as if it's -20 below in Los Angeles during the winter.
|
Nobody is happier to see Staley retained than us.
|
Boy wonder gets to stick around to neuter Herbie even more. Gotta love it

I hope Staley signs a fully guaranteed 20 year extension!!!!

I'm of the belief that if a team has the QB and is loaded with talent, just about any position coach can learn a playbook, create some wrinkles for the personnel on the team, and be an okay OC that doesn't stick out as in need of being fired. You don't have to be some mad scientist Al Saunders for people not to demand your head at the end of the year. Just be organized, lead the practices like you would your position groups, and the guys will typically take care of the rest.
Example: Nathaniel Hackett was a shitty OC elsewhere, but paired with the Rodgers/Adams combo, and he looked like a respectable OC. People were thinking Freddie Kitchens did a good job as interim OC that one year before he flopped as a head coach. Lombardi had plenty of experience as a QB coach. He had a system with talented players and a pretty damn good QB. There is ZERO reason why he shouldn't have been able to make that crap work more effectively. |
I think Lombardi got lobbed under the bus. The playcalling isn’t ideal but I think justin Herbert isn’t the golden boy everyone so badly wants him to be. Tremendous talent but I doesn’t have that “over my dead body” mentality.
|
How the hell did Staley survive that loss? 27-0 lead, +5 in turnovers, and lose the game?
Chargers chargering hard keeping that dipshit. |
Defensive meltdown so fire the OC instead of the moron calling Defense.
|
But Staley's staying? YAY

They scored 3 points in the 2nd half. |

I hope the OC says publicly that their plans for the game centered around Mike Williams

|
Oh no! Now the Chargers are back to having NO Lombardis!

they should hire Todd Downing, hear he's available

Herbert choked. End of story. You must keep scoring to win games. No lead is safe with half the game to go.

Herbert was maximized by Steichen who is about to be a hot head coaching candidate. Herbert needs a tools based guy who will minimize the thinking and maximize his arm talent. The problem is all the coaches who do that are going to be head coaches soon. Daboll was an example with Allen. |
I wish they’d have kept him. He’s clueless. Their LT went out, and instead of running to the other side, he just kept on running behind his backup LT who was getting abused.
|
Hackett is available!
|
How could anyone respect Staley with how he bitched out during Bosa's tantrum? Bosa should be designated as a post-June 1st cut immediately, and Staley should have been fired in the third quarter.
|
This is standard stuff in the NFL. When you're a NFL head coach feeling the heat throw someone to the wolves.
Saleh doing that with the Jets. |
The sacrificial lamb.

As long as they keep Staley, I’m good.

Staley back ensures Herbert's 4 year rookie deal goes to the trash bin. What a pathetic franchise. His 5th year option won't come cheap and after that.. good luck. Bosa and James will be on the decline. This team has to ice every draft to keep up with us. No other way around it.
AFC West will be owned by the Chiefs for at least a decade. |
The mirage of Suckbert being an elite QB (rather than a choking fraud with elite skills who cannot translate that into team success) will get many coaches fired.
He'll already be on his third OC in his brief NFL career. Coach killer. |

Now Allen and Herbert will have to make do with more pedestrian coaching and schemes. |

Don't know what to say about the Chargers; they don't seem to play like that against the Chiefs. These people aren't robots and once things start going south, it's hard to pull it all back together and get into the same 'zone' that got you the big lead. |
The only downside I saw of firing Staley is Herbert having to learn his 3rd offense in 4 years. So of course what the Chargers do is take that downside, and combine it with the downside of keeping Staley, to create a worst of both worlds situation. Excellent.
