Staley survives that awful loss

Dante84 01-17-2023 12:46 PM

No Sean Payton for LAC. Ha!

DJ's left nut 01-17-2023 12:47 PM

You pretty much knew that was a foregone conclusion once they announced Staley was coming back.

You couldn't bring back that offensive coaching staff with the same HC...

Gary Cooper 01-17-2023 12:48 PM

They should hire Todd Haley to replace him.

AdolfOliverBush 01-17-2023 12:48 PM

They'll be the preseason AFC West champs no matter who they hire.

Frazod 01-17-2023 12:49 PM

I'm just thrilled they're keeping Wile E. Coyote as their head coach. I love that guy! LMAO

Graystoke 01-17-2023 12:49 PM

Justified. However Staley deserves to be fired as well. Comes down to money and Spanos isn't going to spend.

Gary Cooper 01-17-2023 12:52 PM

I miss seeing games on TV in San Diego. Plenty of sun. The field was pretty. Now they play in that architectural graveyard as if it's -20 below in Los Angeles during the winter.

Eleazar 01-17-2023 12:52 PM

Nobody is happier to see Staley retained than us.

Pablo 01-17-2023 12:53 PM

Boy wonder gets to stick around to neuter Herbie even more. Gotta love it

San Diego and to a lesser extent St. Louis are the NFLs new threats when they want to extort a new stadium from taxpayers.

carcosa 01-17-2023 12:57 PM

I hope Staley signs a fully guaranteed 20 year extension!!!!

RealSNR 01-17-2023 01:01 PM

I'm of the belief that if a team has the QB and is loaded with talent, just about any position coach can learn a playbook, create some wrinkles for the personnel on the team, and be an okay OC that doesn't stick out as in need of being fired. You don't have to be some mad scientist Al Saunders for people not to demand your head at the end of the year. Just be organized, lead the practices like you would your position groups, and the guys will typically take care of the rest.

Example: Nathaniel Hackett was a shitty OC elsewhere, but paired with the Rodgers/Adams combo, and he looked like a respectable OC. People were thinking Freddie Kitchens did a good job as interim OC that one year before he flopped as a head coach.

Lombardi had plenty of experience as a QB coach. He had a system with talented players and a pretty damn good QB. There is ZERO reason why he shouldn't have been able to make that crap work more effectively.

chiefzilla1501 01-17-2023 01:06 PM

I think Lombardi got lobbed under the bus. The playcalling isn’t ideal but I think justin Herbert isn’t the golden boy everyone so badly wants him to be. Tremendous talent but I doesn’t have that “over my dead body” mentality.

Wallcrawler 01-17-2023 01:13 PM

How the hell did Staley survive that loss? 27-0 lead, +5 in turnovers, and lose the game?

Chargers chargering hard keeping that dipshit.

penguinz 01-17-2023 01:18 PM

Defensive meltdown so fire the OC instead of the moron calling Defense.

redfan 01-17-2023 01:21 PM

But Staley's staying? YAY

When you blow a 27-0 lead, it's a group effort.

They scored 3 points in the 2nd half.

I hope they have so much faith in Staley that they also voluntarily take a salary cap hit for his salary even though he’s a coach!!!

smithandrew051 01-17-2023 01:26 PM

I hope the OC says publicly that their plans for the game centered around Mike Williams

Spoiler alert: the owner is ****ing cheap

wazu 01-17-2023 01:31 PM

Oh no! Now the Chargers are back to having NO Lombardis!

backinblack 01-17-2023 01:35 PM

Just wait until they have to re-sign Herbert and he guts the rest of the team...

Red Dawg 01-17-2023 01:40 PM

Herbert choked. End of story. You must keep scoring to win games. No lead is safe with half the game to go.

It was a bad player/scheme match.

Herbert was maximized by Steichen who is about to be a hot head coaching candidate.

Herbert needs a tools based guy who will minimize the thinking and maximize his arm talent.

The problem is all the coaches who do that are going to be head coaches soon. Daboll was an example with Allen.

Coochie liquor 01-17-2023 01:52 PM

I wish they’d have kept him. He’s clueless. Their LT went out, and instead of running to the other side, he just kept on running behind his backup LT who was getting abused.

Coochie liquor 01-17-2023 01:54 PM

Hackett is available!

'Hamas' Jenkins 01-17-2023 01:55 PM

How could anyone respect Staley with how he bitched out during Bosa's tantrum? Bosa should be designated as a post-June 1st cut immediately, and Staley should have been fired in the third quarter.

MahomesMagic 01-17-2023 02:04 PM

This is standard stuff in the NFL. When you're a NFL head coach feeling the heat throw someone to the wolves.

Saleh doing that with the Jets.

Dunerdr 01-17-2023 02:06 PM

The sacrificial lamb.

Seven rushing attempts in the second half.

Spott 01-17-2023 02:13 PM

As long as they keep Staley, I’m good.

I think that's partly why dumbass is still there. That Herbert extension is looming.

Chieftain 01-17-2023 02:40 PM

Staley back ensures Herbert's 4 year rookie deal goes to the trash bin. What a pathetic franchise. His 5th year option won't come cheap and after that.. good luck. Bosa and James will be on the decline. This team has to ice every draft to keep up with us. No other way around it.
AFC West will be owned by the Chiefs for at least a decade.

FloridaMan88 01-17-2023 02:52 PM

The mirage of Suckbert being an elite QB (rather than a choking fraud with elite skills who cannot translate that into team success) will get many coaches fired.

He'll already be on his third OC in his brief NFL career.

Coach killer.

This reinforces how awesome it is that we have Andy Reid as our coach while the Bills and Chargers had Defensive coaches. Both Herbert and Allen were coached by top end OC's but both are going to be head coaches for other teams.

Now Allen and Herbert will have to make do with more pedestrian coaching and schemes.

Why does this sound familiar? Refusal to run the ball in the 2nd half? Only scoring 3 points? Giving up a big lead? Didn't a fairly famous and long tenured coaching staff do something similar in the AFCC recently?

Don't know what to say about the Chargers; they don't seem to play like that against the Chiefs.

These people aren't robots and once things start going south, it's hard to pull it all back together and get into the same 'zone' that got you the big lead.

Jamie 01-17-2023 03:04 PM

The only downside I saw of firing Staley is Herbert having to learn his 3rd offense in 4 years. So of course what the Chargers do is take that downside, and combine it with the downside of keeping Staley, to create a worst of both worlds situation. Excellent.
