Eagles submit proposal to add 0 as eligible jersey number
 

Since NFL teams are running out of numbers, we'd probably be likely to see somebody wearing 0 on just about every team. And you know there's going to be some diva WR who thinks this is neat. And there's probably going to be a couple future top 10 QBs to get drafted in the next years. I could see one of them picking up 0. You're going to have a face of your franchise wearing 0.

The Chiefs should have eight 69s, and five 420s.

I thought this was going to be in honor of their historic defensive lines performance in the Super Bowl.

I've suggested this before - if a player takes a number a team has previously retired, shadowbox the number on the jersey like the way the 49ers did back in the early 90's. Imagine this on a Chiefs uni but with a yellow shadow on the number....

That, or put the retired player's name in small text on the number or somewhere. Something to pay honor to the player while still being able to use the number currently.

I would be in favor but think coaches will tell owners to vote no for 0 and maybe yes for 00 because cover zero is something the QB yells during cadence if he expects cover zero blitz.

The NFL films movie of Super Bowl has Mahomes yell cover zero before signaling for jet motion on the Skyy Moore TD.

They need to have fractions. If a player really wants a number and it's retired, they get a fraction. Perhaps something like 8 1/2.

Could you also have decimal points? And if so, is 8.5 a different player than 8 1/2?

Gotta admit, even though Otis Taylor isn't in the HOF (blasphemy!) it still bothers me seeing any Chiefs player wearing the number 89 jersey.

I think the jersey should go back into play one year after the player's death. Are Bears fans really going to be confused or offended to see Bulldog Turner's or George McAfee's jersey number on the field?

Zero is a good number for that fan base.

Just add a "1" and make new numbers three digits. This ain't exactly rocket science. And if they start doing it with linemen, they won't even have to reduce the number size.

Should be Clyde's number next year. It's been his average yards per carry when getting the ball on first down.

I just looked in the official rulebook (https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2022-nfl-rulebook/), and while the rules say that jersey numbers must be from 1 through 99, they don't say that the numbers must be whole numbers. I would absolutely go with

Honestly, retiring a number shouldn't be a thing. It kind of fixes the problem.

Aside from that, I see no issue with having a 0 on the field either.

I like this fraction idea. 0/4 for a Bills player has a nice ring to it
