Darius Harris’s was the only guy we didn’t tender. He was pretty damn slow. This guy is 235 lbs and is a lot faster. His 3 cone is also below 7 seconds which is damn good.

10 yard split at 1.59 is great too.

Yeah they wanted more speed without losing size. LB’s in this draft are fast but are also small

Maybe they're going to make Bolton a true 2 down backer after seeing him struggle in coverage. Only thing I can see right now other than him taking all of Leo's snaps.

Said to be a cover LB, which I believe was a need. Burrow exposed our LBs lack of quality coverage skills in the first game against the Bengals last year and I am guessing Veach and Andy saw the need.

Chiefs signed LB Drue Tranquill, formerly of the Chargers, to a one-year contract.

Tranquill was a part-time player for the Chargers for three years but stepped into a larger role for the 2022 season. He started all but one game for LA last year and his numbers exploded. He led the Chargers in tackles while totaling five sacks plus 10 TFLs. He also forced a fumble and picked off one pass. Pro Football Focus graded Tranquill as one of the league's best inside linebackers in pass-rush and coverage situations. He should slot into a starting role for Kansas City in 2023.

He can do everything. He's an absolute stud.

The base set having two coverage studs in Tranq and Gay gives us a huge advantage now.

PFF gave him a 66.5 grade.

This could end up being the best group of linebackers we've had in a really long time

It's hard to understand what that number means considering how bad the Chargers run defense was. Their interior was trash.

I still remember when the camera showed him walking off the field after Kelce scored the walk off TD against them. The dejection was overwhelming. We broke him and he had no choice but to sign with us.

Love this move. I’m not sure what kind of role they have in mind, but he is an outstanding player and to land him for $3 million bucks is insane. Plus he clearly wanted to be here if he chose us over 5 other teams. I wouldn’t be shocked if Veach has a bunch of these types of offers floating around out there and we’ll start seeing a few guys accept them.

Seems like a Chenal/Gay hybrid, with a much lower ceiling than Gay but a high floor.

The big deal here is that it's pretty obvious at this point that Spags, insane as it is to say, really missed Ben Niemann last year.

Not that Ben Niemann was anything special, but he was a specialist to take the field on obvious passing downs and relieve Gay/whomever the Sam was.

Sure, Tranquil essentially makes the Chiefs bulletproof at LB. But if Tranquil, with those amazing numbers last season, chose this team over five other teams, that means the Chiefs promised him a ton of snaps.

That means you're going to see Bolton/Tranquil in nickel all year. And a lot less of Gay and Chenal as well.

We'll see what happens when the preseason bullets start flying, but... Very fascinating...

He's one of the many "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" pickups we'll be signing in the future.

ANOTHER random thought.

Does this put us in a position, to, if pressed, be able to walk from Gay if he beats up more vaccuums or gets depressed? Or does it allow us to the freedom to use him as a really valuable trade asset (if needed)?

I don't want to trade Gay - just pointing out that now we seem to have a glut of talent at the position group.

Tranquill had more tackles than Boltons best season

You guys get hung up on one thing and then lose your ability to process broader information. I swear.

Yeah no kidding. He sucked.

Two things can be true.

1. Niemann was bad at football.

2. Spags likes having a guy who he can bring in as a nickel specialist.

Personally, I don't even know if he's that, even. He's a really good blitzer.

I mean, he sure looks like a guy you bring in to start. So I'm just punching at projections like everybody else is.

Gay is heading into a contract year. I wonder if they are thinking about trading him and having Tranquil be the replacement? Probably not. If so, then they would have signed Tranquil for more than 1 year.

I think both are much more possible now than they were at the start of the day.

I do agree with you that Gay is unlikely to be traded. What would you put the odds at? For me, barely above single digits.

But I do think the Chiefs are not going to be in a space to extend him. Tranquil's going to have a full season to audition for the role if it's there.

Bolton isn’t that great when it comes to coverage. I think you can use Tranquill in situations that would require him to cover and not have a huge downgrade from Bolton when it comes to tackling.
