Call Your Shot: Who's the Chiefs first pick?

RunKC pulled the trigger early, and many weren't ready to make that call, so that thread just turned into a mega thread. This is the OFFICIAL thread to call your shot, so let's hear it.

I'm going with Felix Anudike-Uzomah, EDGE, Kansas St.

He fits a need. He's 21 years old (Veach loves drafting 21 year old rookies). Local guy. Intelligent (Veach noted how important that is for them in yesterdays PC) and has been described by scouts as a "savvy" rusher. He checks most of the boxes for the Spags prototype except he's just under 260 at 255. Excellent 3 cone, and he can bend, which I think this defense is missing.

He probably wouldn't be my first choice, but definitely on my short list.

smithandrew051 04-21-2023 05:08 PM

Zay Flowers

ToxSocks 04-21-2023 05:10 PM

Ive got the suspicion that it'll be Quinten Johnston, though rooting for Zay Flowers.

Kind of a lazy pick by me, as truly in my heart i think it'll be a DE. I just have no clue which one so im going with a name im more familiar with at WR.

Coogs 04-21-2023 05:10 PM

kccrow will probably take me off of his shout out list, but I would just love to see this guy kicking the shit out of OBJ on his way to obliterating Burrow. I think he would fit nicely into our rotation, and with the way our LB's can flow to the ball, if they ran at him we would be okay too.

Broderick Jones

kccrow 04-21-2023 06:27 PM

My official call is...

the Chiefs are going to move up a little and take Anton Harrison, OT, Oklahoma.

It's not the move I've been pining for but it's just how I feel after listening to Veach and the current makeup of the OLine.

My feeling on the top 3 rounds is 1. OT Harrison 2. WR Rice 3. DT Pickens.

ForeverIowan 04-21-2023 06:32 PM

Darnell Wright or Broderick Jones.

Nothing is more important than keeping Mahomes healthy. I just don't see the Chiefs heading into a 17+ game season trusting Niang to be a full time starter at tackle.

Couch-Potato 04-21-2023 06:42 PM

Poll?

JPH83 04-21-2023 06:44 PM

I was going to go Felix as well, that's my hunch. But if I need to be original I'd say a slight trade up for Murphy.

I actually think OT, right or left, is the only position on the team where a starting position might be up for grabs. DT next to Jones is debatable, but a 3rd or 4th round DT might be just the ticket at DT too.

For me, taking a OT in the 1st makes a of of sense.

But so does an edge like Nolan Smith, who is not a clone of the other guys we already have on the team. A change of pace edge. Chris Jones sliding out to the LDE spot, and Smith on the RDE spot with Karlaftis and Omenihu sliding inside makes me smile at this point in April.

And I am good with a WR early too. So many choices. All pretty good.

TwistedChief 04-21-2023 09:45 PM

Anton Harrison.

Chiefs go tackle in the first given the large drop off after the top tier.

Address WR in the second. Dell or Rice.

BossChief 04-21-2023 10:22 PM

I think Veach slipped a tad when he mentioned pick 18 as a spot to hypothetically move up to while stating that too much of a move up is gonna cost too much so here goes…

If Lukas Van Ness -or Nolan Smith make it to 18, Veach moves up to get either guy. Van Ness as the top guy with his ability to play edge while sliding inside at attacking guards has to have them salivating as tgat pairs perfectly with Omenihu.

If they both go before 18, then I think Veach goes up to early 20s to get Flowers.

If Flowers is gone before 20/21 then I think it would be a smart play to move down a few spots into the early 2nd and take FAU.

I think you might be right. I'm wondering if having Pat throw passes to Flowers and Johnston wasn't a smoke screen to try and get other WR hungry teams to take them early and to throw off would-be trade partners of our intent to nab a DE. Personally, I'd prefer Murphy or Smith but I trust Veach!

I honestly think this is another Veach/Pat situation. Similar to CEH.

I genuinely think Flowers/Johnston are the guys Veach thinks he can go up and get for us for a third rounder and wants Patrick to help make a final informed opinion on either guy. Those throwing sessions happened AFTER those players had their final draft meetings with teams. No info to share with other visits.

Flowers is a dependable WR that is smart, understands defenses and has the speed, acceleration and change of direction skills to attack defenses at all 3 levels. Once Pat reported back to Veach his thoughts, I’m sure Veach is eyeing him to be Pats cheap 5 year WR.

Darnell Wright. Trading up for a WR doesn’t fit Veach’s style, so we address the OT issue to solidify the O line. We can add another playmaker WR on Day 2.

oldman 04-22-2023 06:51 AM

As much as I'd like an EDGE, I think it'll be Harrison, OT. Who is the most important player on this team? One Patrick Mahomes and you do whatever you can to build an iron wall around him. Said Mr. Mahomes can make just about any competent WR a stud, not the other way around.

PHOG 04-22-2023 07:08 AM

I think he trades down a few spots, selects Harrison, and then uses that acquired pick and our 2nd to trade up and select whoever is (DE,WR) highest on their board.

Rainbarrel 04-22-2023 07:27 AM

CJ Stroud, I have nothing to lose

So is Zay Jones it's almost like it would take a trade up. You would need ammunition to do so like if you're a team that just won the SB, have ten picks but not ten needs.

Vontae Mack no matter what

old_geezer 04-22-2023 10:39 AM

My thoughts: If the Chiefs decide to swing for the fences I think they trade up to get Flowers; If they stay put I think they will go with the best Edge available (and there will be more than one). I can't bring myself to believe that they are comfortable with Niang/Chief Winnabago so I see them moving up into the 20s to nab an OT and since everybody else is guessing Harrison I'm going with Dawand Jones. I would be happy with any of those scenarios.

ForeverIowan 04-22-2023 11:10 AM

I dont think Zay Flowers is going any higher than mid 20s at best...am I wrong? Id say there is a 95% likelihood one of these three are available at 31 if Veach is targeting a receiver: 1.) Flowers 2.) Addison 3.) Johnston. I dont think 4 receivers go in the 1st round.

Chief Northman 04-22-2023 11:24 AM

Anton Harrison.

Too much drop off at the position after him and Wright. Plug and play starter for years to come and you protect the best player in football at all costs.

I actually think the Chiefs will trade up in the second round to get a defensive lineman or receiver they like even if it costs them draft capital in 2024.

TimeForWasp 04-22-2023 11:27 AM

None of you have a clue, so why don’t you just have another CP circle jerk?

UChieffyBugger 04-22-2023 11:32 AM

Yeah it seems like the Anton Harrison pick is the one. But if him and Quinton Johnston are both on the board things could get interesting.

There isn't a WR in this draft that gives you what D-Hop would over the next 2 seasons, especially not with the mid to late round pick it would take to acquire him. Money aside, it's a no-brainer IMO. However, It'd be preferable to complete the draft and then offer one of next year's picks for D-Hop assuming his market remains minimal.

Who’s paying D-Hops salary?

Wisconsin_Chief 04-22-2023 12:09 PM

Anton Harrison because you simply can’t let Mahomes keep being exposed like he has. If he wasn’t a mutant he would have been out for the playoffs after that Jacksonville game. It’s not fair to keep expecting that out of him. It’s irresponsible to go into the year without 2 top flight tackles protecting him. Have to make it a priority.

Exactly. We have 2 picks in the 4th, 6th, and 7th. Bundle some and move up in the 2nd and 3rd, grab an EDGE and TE. This is not the year to stake a lot of draft capital on a WR. It's Mahomes that makes the O run.

Well, you can't put money aside. We simply do not have the cap space to acquire him without cutting talent.

Chiefs Biggest positions of need:

OL-For so many years chiefs drafted first round tackles to protect free agent QB’s
Now we have the world’s best QB. We lost our starting LT and signed a starting RT.

First rd pick should be a projected starter at LT guaranteed. Has to be.

DE or DT second round. whoever best falls or Chiefs trade up in second.

WR-I’m like many who want Hopkins, and chiefs draft his replacement by finding gem in 3rd round or later.
