Let's all dream. Commanders' Chase Young

Can't believe this isn't Q

Let's get this out of the way: can't make the club from the tub!

DJ's left nut 04-26-2023 11:27 AM

I think it was like an $18 million figure based on his draft position. And given that it IS guaranteed for injury and injury is by far and away his biggest problem - they really had their hands tied.

I can't say that I blame them. They still have the tag available to use should he prove to be healthy/effective next year and maybe that could encourage a LTC.

There just wasn't much value in the 5th year option for them.

DJ's left nut 04-26-2023 11:27 AM

And no, O.City, I don't want to give up a 1st and next year's 2nd for him.

I don't know that the Commanders can afford to keep that DL intact?

What, if anything, WOULD you be willing to give up for him?

Probably what......a conditional 2nd or something?

That is true and after reading about how 5th year options are for players that make a PB, it's not as appealing as it used to be.

Honestly, I don't think we can afford him without extending him and I really don't have any interest in doing that without seeing him play.

I mean there's always a little more of PM's salary we could bonus out but again, that just starts to get pretty hairy the more you do it. I guess he only has about a $5 million hit for the acquiring team so...a 3rd this year? I don't want to touch next year's draft capital - that draft is too good.

Maybe a pick swap or two in there to close the gap if necessary?

The injury history is just so damn bad.

You have to do better than that. Also a grilled cheese sandwich, if they get greedy offer them tomato soup as well.

Since his rookie year, Young has just 1.5 sacks in 12 total games. Unless you get the medical staff, Cleveland Clinic & Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to sign off: no thank you.

I don’t think that coaching staff can afford not to for at least this year.

A 3rd plus a Chris Jones extension would be intriguing, to me.

But that upside is so high. If there was a training/medical staff that could work with that history it would be KCs. McKinnon was injury prone until he got here, Kelce hasn't missed a game in forever, Mahomes bounces back from almost everything etc..... I honestly can't remember the last time injuries truly hurt this team or KC had a huge list of players on IR. Maybe it was the SB loss to Tampa?

Just shit posting here and not at all serious but Kadarius Toney had a pretty lengthy issue with injuries and welp

BossChief 04-26-2023 12:11 PM

I like the player and brought up the possibility of trading for him a month or two ago, but there’s no way you can trade anything significant for him and then turn around and give him a new deal with lots of guarantees.

That said, KC would be a great fit for him. Premier position coaching and medical staff could breathe life into his young career.

Couch-Potato 04-26-2023 03:23 PM

Does that make him a FA? He will play for another team next season or they will work out a contract with him? Would we have to trade something for him or was he basically released?

He is still under contract with Washington until after this season.

Kiimo 04-26-2023 03:31 PM

Yeah same draft class and situation as CEH not getting that 5th year option. Probably.

Wilson8 04-26-2023 03:41 PM

There is the allure of bringing in a really good edge rusher that could dominate a football game. Chase has not been that player for two years, but maybe he could return to that.

Injury history of Chase Young -
Sep 27, 2020 - Inguinal Groin Strain Grade 2. Missed one game for his rookie season.
Nov 14, 2021 - Knee ACL Tear Grade 3. Missed 21 games in 2 seasons recovering from injury.

tredadda mentioned Jerick McKinnon and this is a good comparison because both players had a major ACL injury that takes a lot of time to recover from. Jerick missed his 2018 and 2019 seasons recovering from his ACL tear, grade 3.

Chase Young can still be a really good football player, but he is not a free agent and he is still being paid well as a 2020 1 (2) draft pick. His cap for Washington for 2023 is $10,997,509. They could save $5,323,219 with $5,674,290 of dead money in a trade.

A team trading for Chase with his current contract, would still have to pay $5,323,219 for 1 year of his service.

It is interesting to think about but considering KC would have to trade for him and still have to pay over $5M. Also, has he fully recovered?

The contract long term for him would be a barrier, if he could stay healthy he could easily be better than any DE available in this draft and especially where KC is picking.

Just $5million? For Chase? That's a steal and a half if he could stay healthy. Dude is a beast.

He definitely WAS a beast before his injury. He only has a couple of sacks since then though so his beast status after recovery remains to be seen.

Well that's true. And I didn't pay any attention to him after his injury for some reason.

I guess if Veach acquired him, I'd trust that Chase is healthy.

Good God though, if he was healthy, our DL would be pretty scary. George, CJ and Chase all on the same line in a passing situation? That'd be nuts.

Wallcrawler 04-26-2023 07:05 PM

That ACL tear is pretty concerning.

I mean, we just got rid of a big money DE underperforming supposedly because he wasn't fully healthy in Frank Clark. Do we really want a guy coming in and trying to baby a bad wheel?

Not sure that's the move.

However, Veach did trade away a first rounder for a 2 season bandaid at LT, so it isn't out of the question if he believes that Chase Young can not only play the full season, but do it at a high expectation level.

ACL is a pretty ugly injury for a D lineman.

Dunerdr 04-26-2023 07:23 PM

Would you trade our second for was 3 + young?

I don't follow college but what's your evaluation for next year's draft? Which positions will be rich and ripe for the picking?
