The 94 Chiefs draft room says it all about that era

ROFL

Hand-wringing over Mario Bates, Greg Hill or William Floyd.

Is that Lynn Stiles' daughter taking in family fun day at the draft?

I was 8 years old, right around the time I became a fan. Maybe a year later…

Mecca 06-23-2023 02:42 PM

It was weird how into William Floyd people were.

digger 06-23-2023 02:43 PM

"The real deal" Greg Hill...

alpha_omega 06-23-2023 02:47 PM

Guess he wasn't the real deal.

WhawhaWhat 06-23-2023 02:54 PM

At least they got Donnell Bennett in the 2nd round in case Greg Hill didn't work out.

Bearcat 06-23-2023 02:54 PM

Heath Shuler and Trent Dilfer early in the 1st round, then no other quarterbacks until Perry Klein at 111... yikes.

Athletic fullbacks in the WCO man...it was that era.

Best22 06-23-2023 03:01 PM

Could’ve drafted Isaac Bruce or Kevin Mawae

loochy 06-23-2023 03:01 PM

Rashaan Sheehee
Mike Cloud
Greg Hill
Donnell Bennett

Some spare-ass running backs have been through here

Rain Man 06-23-2023 03:05 PM

Isaac Bruce! Take Isaac Bruce!

Just kidding. Take Greg Hill. We don't want any butterfly effects to nudge our course away from Patrick Mahomes II.

Cmon now Heath Shuler went on to be a crappy congressman.

oh now THIS would be a good idea for a time travel movie

AdolfOliverBush 06-23-2023 03:45 PM

Marty Schottenheimer knocked up Greg Hill's girlfriend. LOL

I would walk out at the point in the movie where Clark and Andy are debating whether to trade up for Patrick Mahomes II when they already have Lamar Jackson.

if i was the director, the film would end up with mahomes limping off on crutches as lamar celebrated winning a super bowl in the background, and as he walked down the tunnel, all you would hear is andy's voice whispering "rosebud"

Gary Cooper 06-23-2023 04:00 PM

That draft looks amazing compared to their 1995 draft.

Bowser 06-23-2023 04:02 PM

Ah, Greg Hill. What could have been if Marty would have just kept it in his pants.

Rainbarrel 06-23-2023 04:09 PM

A nylon wind breaker and a clipboard in the waist line of your pants. Was tail getting gear

Gary Cooper 06-23-2023 04:19 PM

I never heard this story about Marty and Greg Hill's wife.

I need pictures of this broad or I don't believe it.

ToxSocks 06-23-2023 04:21 PM

When you google the Greg Hill/Marty thing, pretty much the only thing that pops up is Chiefsplanet.

It's such a weird story.

The only explanation I can come up with is she wanted to get back at Greg Hill by banging his coach.

She could have utterly destroyed that regime at the time if she had gone public. I'd guess some money changed hands.

reminds me of Mrs Dorn

SHOWTIME 06-23-2023 04:58 PM

That entire draft sucked in general. Handful of good players, but who else were the Chiefs supposed to take there? Maybe Isaac Bruce, Kevin Mawae, or Larry Allen?

notorious 06-23-2023 05:04 PM

In the end it wouldn't have mattered who we drafted. Marty was Marty, and we didn't have a QB.

KCJake 06-23-2023 05:10 PM

Greg Hill started every game with a 12 yard gain up the middle. Then you never seen him for the rest of the game.

He's a polarizing topic around here, but I think the Chiefs completely wasted his talent. I saw the same thing that you did.

Then he went to the Rams and was about to become a star there when he broke his leg.

The NFL was not kind to Greg Hill.

Wisconsin_Chief 06-23-2023 05:34 PM

All that just to end up drafting Greg Hill.

Amazing stuff.

Otter 06-23-2023 05:47 PM

Once again a simple search led me into a YouTube rabbit hole. There's some really good eye candy inbetween the countdown btw.

Note to self: Don't draft a RB from Penn State.

Trent Dilfer would go on to win the 2000 SB with the Ravens

Only because of the O-Line, when it was gone, so was he.

jerryaldini 06-23-2023 10:55 PM

Didn't seem very scientific back in the day.

I did learn from this that Larry Izzo once took a dump on the sideline and Big Bill gave him a game ball for it.

Hammock Parties 06-23-2023 11:01 PM

they took donnell bennett in the 2nd round LMAO

Hammock Parties 06-23-2023 11:07 PM

it's actually ****ing nuts that the same scouting department produced Woods, Tongue, Browning, Edwards and JOE HORN three years later

the franchise was too stupid to keep horn of course and instead gave huge money to an aging derrick alexander LMAO

ChiefsCountry 06-23-2023 11:46 PM

Crazy thing is Peterson had a major woody for a quarterback in that draft but couldn't do it.

ChiefsCountry 06-23-2023 11:59 PM

Also went back and pulled up the KC Star articles from that time. Chiefs only had Marcus Allen and some unknown as the only running backs under contract at the time of the draft. Free agency was in it's early days and teams hadn't figured it out quite yet. It's basically why they went after Hill and Bennett. Also the Star had the day before the draft that Hill was the #2 overall running back behind Marshal Faulk. Basically it made sense on draft day.

Pitt Gorilla 06-24-2023 12:03 AM

They didn't have a ****ing clue what they were doing.

Brody Wa 06-24-2023 04:12 AM

What’s the over/under on how many times Brett Veach is better than Carl Peterson? Does 10 10 times sound right?

Brody Wa 06-24-2023 04:13 AM

Oooops

crayzkirk 06-24-2023 06:12 AM

Ahhhh... The 80s. No matter how bad you try to frame the Chiefs drafting, 1983 was the absolute pinnacle of stupidity.

Please, don't remind me of those times. Looking back is to invite depression, looking forward is to invite anxiety, look to the now when things are great and the Chiefs have the best QB in the league.

Enjoy it because it could be over tomorrow.

They are using Betamax and video tapes?

God I hated Stiles and King Carl. Arrogant little shits.

TambaBerry 06-24-2023 09:55 AM

Imagine if that happened today back to back rb in the first two rounds. This place would go nuclear

Not even sure if Veatch could survive that. Any other GM would certainly by fired on the spot, since obviously they would be totally Col. Kurtz'ing it.

warpaint* 06-25-2023 09:10 AM

Carl was just good enough to stick and cash checks and was a douche to boot. He’d come up with a good draft when he was about to wash out more than once but never string enough together to build a sb team.

Plenty of rb talent in that draft and they whiffed on all of it

Jamal Anderson
Charlie Garner
Dorsey Levins
Bam Bam

Even Errict Rhett was a better option.

Almost as bad as Carl evaluating qbs. Rich Gannon in house? Nah. Mike Elkins check. Matt Blundin check. Pat Barnes. Steve Stenstrum. Check check etc. Couldn’t even ever fluke up a Gardner Menshew (sp?) type.

King Carl use to bring his entourage and visitors out to show them the tailgates. My tailgate was by the tee-pee tailgate. So we'd see the group when they came out to show them how us heathens enjoyed tailgating. I never said or yelled anything at him. I still regret that to this day.

I know he's the one shining example of "yOu DoN't NeEd A fRaNcHisE qB tO wIn It AlL!" over all these years, but hadn't really looked at his stats... and damn, just think about how good that defense was, for these QBs to win a SB.

Tony Banks - 8 games, threw for 1578 yards, 8 TDs/8 INTs and a QB rating of 69.3 (nice)
Dilfer - 8 games, 1502 yards, 12 TDs, 11 INTs, 76.6 rating

Dilfer's playoff stats that postseason...
9/14, 130, 1 TD (won 21-3)
5/16, 117 (won 24-10)
9/18, 190, 1 TD, 1 INT (won 16-3)
12/25, 153, 1 TD (won 34-7)

I did enjoy those old school defensive battles when the Ravens played good offenses, like against Peyton Manning.... but damn their offense was atrocious.

Rainbarrel 06-25-2023 10:10 AM

It was a different time. I recall a quote that Lamar wanted a franchise running back. Of course a quote can be used for different ends

Yeah, it was the beginning of the end for truly great defenses (and not like today where "top 5 defense" just means you're marginally better than everyone else)... even the St. Louis Rams had to win like a 11-6 game in the NFCCG on their way to a SB victory.
