Anyone is better than James.

Near certainty it will be Justin Watson on return duties. He may not run a lot, but vs. CHI we don't need any return yards. Just field the thing reliably and don't make any dumb decisions are all that's needed for this game.

I prefer to let the ball go on punts. Mahomes at the 1 yard line is better than fumbling the punt return.

Eh, okay, sure. Doubt anyone's worried about their punter or their coverage unit making a game-changing play in this one. We could put nearly anyone back there, even allow for a couple fumbles, and it wouldn't change the outcome of the game probably.


I just would put someone back there reliable. But there's no real reason to be super-conservative about it.

This is just the type of game that ends up closer than anyone expects. Bears are a bad team, but desperate.

I'm not worried at all, but if Fields was ever gonna dig deep and try to ball out, this is the game.

Having Bolton out would be a huge loss against any semi-decent team. But the bears aren't semi-decent or even semi-dogshit. They were the worst team I had the displeasure of watching last year and not much has changed. They are shite. Plus their city is a shite hole. I hope any chiefs travelling to Chicago get out of there safely.

I was looking at James’s career punt return history, he has a total of 81 punt returns with 8 loss fumbles. He did have one great year, 2019, he didn’t fumble at all in 32 chances, all the other years he has averaged 1 loss fumble every 6 chances. Wonder how he did so good in 2019 compared to all his other years of returning punts.

I think they might bring up Montrell Washington from the PS to do returns

First of all...if his job is to return punts and Kickoffs his pregame routine should have included scoping out issues that might arise with where the sun could be.

Second....the moment he lost sight of the ball his first instinct should have been to get away.

That average is good enough to bat ninth for the Royals.

All of the guys on the injury list have those injuries that can be nagging - toes, hamstrings, etc. That's worrisome.

If you have a good offense there isn't even really a benefit of fielding a punt. Especially if you have a 10+ point lead in the 2nd half...never ever field a punt. Dont even put anyone back there.

Can anyone point me to any math of the expected points gained per punt return for a fair catch, a return and a not even fielded punt? If it causes a turnover every 5%-7% of plays I dont get why teams try to return it. Thesedays almost nobody is doing a good job of getting alot of yards on punt returns. Special teams coverage is more solved than ever. I feel like unless you are behind in a football game the strategy may be to not even have someone field the thing but Ive never seen math done. Not just rhe avg return...it needs to take into account the turnover rate as well.

I also pray for any Chiefs traveling to Chicago, since they would miss the game they are playing in Kansas City.

From what I could find, historically you have about a 1.5% chance of losing a fumbled punt. So on average you probably lose 1-2 a year, which seems about right. I don't have the math in front of me, but I imagine the loss of yards by never attempting to catch a ball would outweigh 1-2 possessions a year, especially inside the 20.

With Pops questionable, I fully expect Nagy to emphasize the run game. Get ready.

Anyone remotely dinged should use this as a bye week. The Bears are a dumpster fire of the highest order. Starters are sitting mid third quarter in this one.

If you never attempted to even catch the ball, punters would start punting so the ball would roll and you would get 70 yard punts with rolls.

Or if the punting team was closer, you would end up pinned on your own 1 or 2 yard line.
