Best Christmas movies nomination thread

It’s Christmas movie season so let’s see which is the best. Nominate Christmas movies here and we will have a head to head tournament to determine which movie can achieve the honor of best Christmas movie according to CP.

I’ll seed them based on domestic box office and adjust for inflation. Go!

mr. tegu 12-08-2023 08:34 AM

I’ll start with what I assume will be one of the favorites to win.

Christmas Vacation.

Miracle on 34th Street. My personal favorite closely followed by the original A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim.

Tough to beat "A Christmas Carol" with Scrooge.

The comparisons for what defines a good movie in the first place. If you are looking for a the Christmas "Spirit" it is not Home Alone, Die Hard, nor Christmas Vacation. All are great movies and fun to watch but little in the "Spirit".

Also, Home Alone.

The hell it is. Just because some dipshit, however ****ing many years ago, said it IS a Christmas movie and now a bunch of other dipshits think it's a Christmas movie too, doesn't make it a Christmas movie.

Yeah, nothing original in our house. The kids usually watch Home Alone 3-4 times every holiday season and we watch Christmas Vacation a couple times as well. And then I always tend to squeeze in Bad Santa as well. I'm also a fan of The Family Stone, even though it makes me feel like a girl saying that.

No one has to tell me Home Alone is a Christmas movie. The whole movie is about Christmas, the Christmas season, family, etc. That meets the very selective standard that some people have regarding "true" Christmas movies needing to have the "Christmas spirit" to qualify. My bar has always been, does it make me think of Christmas? If yes, it's a Christmas movie. I'll entertain the anti Die Hard argument, but I don't understand the Home Alone hate, unless you just don't like the movie.

I'll take the Alastair Sim option.

I like Christmas Story, but does it have to be on for 24 hours straight?

A Tim Allen movie shouldn't be anywhere near this list.

Die Hard is an action movie with Christmas elements sprinkled in.

Merry Xmas.

The classic 1951 with Alastair Sim in black and white. Especially even as a kid it intrigued me. The Christmas message is powerful. The presence of the super natural enhanced the theme. The ending was the bow around the package.

I think Christmas/New Year is a special time for family, friends and reflection.

All of the above are great entertaining movies: action and comedy in the setting around Christmas time...not a true "Christmas" movie. It's a Wonderful life comes close, but quite long (I about fell asleep).

I watch more classic SNL Christmas specials and old Office Christmas episodes over the movies anymore. Home Alone 3 was discussed on the weekend update on one of the ones I watched recently. Norm was a legend.

http://funny115.com/norm/pic458.png

“Twentieth Century Fox has announced that Macaulay Culkin will NOT be hired to star in Home Alone 3. A studio spokesman said that it was nothing personal, but with Culkin now sixteen years of age, the only way to keep him in the film would be to make the character reeruned.”

A Christmas Story is a boomer movie that is overplayed. It's annoying that it's on all day on X mas bc my boomer parents made me watch the shit out of it that day every year.

Christmas vacation is good but it's not as funny as people make it out to be.

I feel like Home Alone and Elf (20 years old this year) have both aged incredibly well and will continue to age well as the years go on.

Also **** yeah to Trading Places! I love that movie

We go every year to the KC Rep Theater to see their production of A Christmas Carol and every year it's excellent.

Good film. They showed it much more frequently in the 1990's and 2000's. It's rated "R" and has racial motives so it doesn't get played as often. Real shame.

For new movies Spirited on Amazon is pretty good. You have to like Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrel though. If you like them you will probably like the movie, if not you probably won’t like it.

Die Hard in the 1 spot for me. Home Alone and Christmas Vacation battle back and forth between the two and three spots.

And then there is a whole host of others jumbled up after that, from Bad Santa, to Fred Clause, Elf, the original Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, It’s A Wonderful Life and several of the Christmas Carol renditions. Of those the George C. Scott, Muppets, and Bill Murray in Scrooged are probably my favorites.

Home Alone holds up for me, but the underlying premise is tough to identify with in 2023. The existence of cell phones and security systems would instantly solve the underlying premise (cutting the phone line, difficulty reaching someone, not being able to tell someone was home, etc.).
