One Week to Retirement
Good afternoon fellow Planeteers!
Exactly one week from today I will log off my laptop, gather what is left of my belongings at the office, hand in my equipment and turn in my badge. After almost 48 years in my selected occupation I decided that the end of March is my retirement date. I've met many good people in my line of work and made a great deal of life long friends....(some of them Chiefs fans too) Without getting too sentimental.....I think I have run my race and done the best I could to always be at the top of my game. Now comes the next stage of my life....and I do have plans. But it would be nice to hear from any of the rest of you who are retired as to what happened after you retired......did you take a few weeks off before just moving to something part time or volunteer work? Or did you just hit the ground running. Any retirement wisdom is greatly appreciated. (And no....I am not taking a trip to Belize nor will I be drinking any anti-freeze) |
Hey Belize is nice and your retirement money goes further!
|
Weird that you are being coy about your field of work even though you are about to retire from it.
|
I retired and spend all day masterbating

But to satisfy your curiosity I am a Corporate Senior Credit Manager.... |
Lucky you
Have fun and enjoy it. |
Congrats, I hope you’re able to take care of your health and enjoy the things that make you happy.

Who knows...maybe what I will do is choose a different chapter each game and drive to that city. See some other groups. |

Congratulations!
You will enjoy it. I don't think you need to rush into a new activity, unless you are already involved with some project and would like to be more involved. No need to commit yourself to some situation where somebody expects you to show up. They aren't the boss of you. You are. |

Honestly...that is part of why I am retiring. The heart attack in 2022 reminded me that I am not getting any younger. |

My wife told me she is giving me 6 weeks of grace to decompress and relish retirement. Then she says the "honey-do" list is fair game. |

I'll also probably go to Jacksonville, ATL, Vegas, LA and the other 3 chapters in my area. We are going to work on getting the international chapters we know exist into the Kingdom this off season. |
Congrats! Just checked my countdown clock and I have 6 Months and 20 days to go.
|
Congrats Mosbonian. I am not retired but I have spent enough time with retired people to give one piece of advice: Have some kind of well-rounded exercise regimen that you prioritize every week as if your life depended on it.
|
I'm about 5 years into retirement and have made 'puttering' an art form. A series of low key household projects sprinkled liberally with internet perusal, the planet, word puzzles, etc.
A couple years after I started working, the plant manger for our manufacturing facility retired after 35 years there. He was the original manager of the plant - it was pretty much his baby and he had poured a lot of effort into it. Anyway, about months after he retired, the office got a call from his wife, asking, "Is there anything Bob can do out there? Anything?" lol |
stay busy, those that retire and don't have hobbies or stay busy struggle and many die soon after. So, find something that stimulates you and keeps you busy, truly have a bucket list and try to check it off, and live long and prosper...
|
get an obedient, lazy dog
|
Enjoy, get hobbies or a charity you like to help out.
I'm right behind you. 1 week and 20 years or so |
Congrats and go on a trip Spokane Washington is nice this time of year.
|
Congratulations and after 48 years, it sure sounds like you more than deserve it!
The only advice I have heard from nearly ALL my retired friends is be careful of the Home Depot addiction. You have all this time, you see a few minor things you want to update, upgrade or fix at your house and you head to Home Depot. It starts innocent enough and you're there maybe once every 10-14 days and don't spend too much. Suddenly you are there every other day and you are racking up $1,000 visits like water. Before you realize it, everyone in the store knows you on a first name basis, you've been named Customer of the Month and Visa card just upped your credit limit to $50,000. |
I am close. Been a shop teacher for 34 years. Lots of steps on concrete have rendered my feet and ankles mush. I now have a scooter at school. Love teaching and fear walking away. Trying to transition in my brain and wallet what retirement will look like.
|
I envy you, Mos. I wish I could retire right now.

Let me know when you come to Jax.....and yeah would love to meet up if you are going to any up here from Orlando and north |

Wondering at what point my wife will be calling someone to come take me off her hands....or get me away from "fixing " things. |

I'd go crazy if I retired.
We will see in 10 years if I feel the same way. Enjoy it, man. My father retired years ago and he's handling it great. Has a lot of hobbies, keeps occupied. My mother, not so much. |

Congrats!
Speaking of Florida, my dad retired to The Villages and while I might change my mind in another 15-20 years, it seems like my kind of retirement life (well, except that it's in Florida). All kinds of stuff to do... softball leagues, bus rides to a different beach every week, live music, etc. |

Best advice is to not discuss getting out until your release date or one of your co workers might try to start a fight and get your release date moved back
|
Congrats! I hope to start a similar thread in 18 mos.

I officially retired after 31 years in 2006.
Post retirement was helped along by being rehired in a reseash position and I conducted field trials for 9 years and established a small business as well. Financially we were ok, we had debt in line and my 401/IRA was solid and I had a great financial guy guiding that process Key for us was to watch expences and plan our spending in line with income. Do what you like and have fun. You earned it. |

We will live in a manner that allows us to be comfortable but not extravagant. We are debt free....so that helps and luckily both of us worked thru the pandemic so no loss of income. |
Now with my free time I can catch up on my number of posts with all the other people who have no lives on here.

I was in NH for a while last fall and there were so many cloudy days and it rained a **** ton... not the end of the world by any means, but being back in the Arizona sun/weather was glorious. |

15 more years to hit 30 years of service...probably won't make it that far, this is a young mans game and I'm not young anymore. I'm guessing around 8 more years.
Congrats tho! I have watched quite a few walk out the door for the last time over the past 2 years and I am envious. |
My grandfather retired and bought an RV. He then proceeded to drive around the country and see all his kids/grandkids.

Congrats on making it! I'm about one month behind you and feeling surprisingly impatient here at the end. I want to take a few months to decompress and then go back to work that I'll find meaningful. I might wind up working as much during "retirement" but on things I've wanted to do. Already been doing some volunteer work on weekends and have really enjoyed that. Good luck!
|
Congrats and go **** yourself. I've got about 10 years left. I can't wait.

I will also say this...there will be times that you look at what is going on around you and you will say....I've had enough of this silliness.... |

Like you I plan to decompress and eventually do something that I enjoy....part time/consultant work and volunteer work that I have wanted to do forever. |

Congrats, Mosbonian and jerryaldini! That's a great accomplishment for you. I'll look forward to hearing how you're using your time over the first six months of retirement.
I'll be retiring fully in roughly August of 2025, but I'm working sporadically for the next year, with stretches of working full time, part-time, and not at all. So I'm dipping my toes in retirement. You'd think that working sporadically would mean having more time, but for some reason I've been hit with all sorts of time-consuming unexpected things, and work also ebbs and flows, so I haven't had a chance to build a routine. I'm about to hit a three-month period of a lot of hours, but in September or so I'll end up with a long stretch of not working at all. My plan now is to have the entire winter and spring off before putting a bow on my career next summer. |
Congrats.
Anybody who tells you that you need to stay busy is wrong Retirement means you deserve leisure, so enjoy In my experience, those who have retired and feel compelled to keep "doing something" are usually folks who are trying to distract themselves from the question, "What is my purpose in life?" I have a friend who retired and then got another job....I have coffee with him weekly. He despises working but justifies it as keeping his mind busy or other bullshit excuses. I think he works to stay away from his menopausal wife and also to distract him from how he finishes his twilight years on this marble. I retired 6 years ago and not by choice(medical reasons) but I am figuring out now......the toughest part of retirement is being content doing whatever you want guilt free. "Hobbies, bucket lists, etc" are only distractions in my opinion to avoid asking and answering the question, "What is my purpose now?" Read "Life Worth Living" and "Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" That will keep you thinking ;) Congrats!!!!! |
