Doubtful. While we are better than expected and seemingly ahead of schedule, we don't have the horses to compete with the elite. Should be a fun fight for the last wildcard spot though. But teams like NYY and LAD are far better than us. We just don't have the hitters, nor bullpen, to compete game after game with them. And apparently the starters decided to take this series off, as well.

His opportunity to be a starter with the Royals is gone, he may be able to be a 1 inning guy if it upticks his velocity.

Also this isn't exactly a great litmus test either, the Yankees are the best team in baseball. The Royals are improved but not on that level. If you just compare the lineups the Yankees lineup is absurd.

No matter what happens that's a heck of a first inning for Marsh. He completely made Soto and Judge look lost up there. That was impressive.

Clean 1st inning. That counts as a win for this game.

Bullpen isn't to blame. Defense gave up two runs. Vinny and Hampson play.

The go-ahead run was probably going to score, even with a better throw from right field. But that throw from Waters was ugly. Kind of like this entire series.

Everyone outside of about Bobby Witt and Alec Marsh seem intimidated and scared of the Yankees. It's one thing if you're getting beat by Judge and Soto, but we're getting owned by some horrific hitters at the bottom of their lineup. And letting Nestor Cortes (who has been very bad on the road) deal for 7 innings?

Top of the order, please salvage this unmitigated disaster of a series with a getaway day comeback.

I'm with TLO. As nice as it has been to have a couple months-ish of relevant baseball, this does not feel like a team on the brink of sustained, serious contention. More like fool's gold, lightning in a bottle, whatever your favorite, similar cliché is.
