Justin Herbert dealing with a high ankle sprain

Could be Easton Stick time again. Chargers play the Steelers this week.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Justin Herbert said it’s “yet to be decided” whether he’ll play Sunday. He said the injury is a high right ankle sprain. Also said the pain is “not great.”<br><br>“Thankfully it’s only Friday.” <a href="https://t.co/cPfcDhl4d7">pic.twitter.com/cPfcDhl4d7</a></p>&mdash; Kris Rhim (@krisrhim1) <a href="https://twitter.com/krisrhim1/status/1837200383527055501?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 20, 2024</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Red Dawg 09-20-2024 12:51 PM

Well, of course he is. It's football season.

staylor26 09-20-2024 12:53 PM

Herbert is legitimately injury prone at this point.

pugsnotdrugs19 09-20-2024 12:54 PM

Rethinking that Chargers pick right now.

PIT pass rush is gonna give anyone problems, even LA's tackles.

Womble 09-20-2024 12:55 PM

Justin Herbert is also dealing with an acute case of loseritis.

wazu 09-20-2024 12:55 PM

Anybody watched much of the Chargers this year? A friend of mine mentioned he saw some and it looked like Herbert kept getting crushed and pass protection didn't look good. This dude is generally pretty smart about what he sees in NFL games so kinda hoping this is a thing for them.

St. Patty's Fire 09-20-2024 12:57 PM

i would absolutely sit him, they need him healthy against us in 9 days

Should probably sit him for both if at all. They aren't beating us either way so get healthy instead.

Tackles are phenomenal but he’ll hold onto the football

High ankle sprains don't heal in two weeks.

He’s 32-32 in his career. He’s lost 10 more games than Patrick Mahomes has in 34 fewer starts.

Gonna be an interesting battle. Alt gave Clowney his worst PFF grade of his entire career last Sunday.

Hate to say it but they’ve probably got the best bookend tackles in the business right now

"Overrated and Injury Prone" aren't great things to have attached to the QB you just showered millions upon and who your head coach seems to have little interest in...

Harbaugh would dump Herbert and his contract for Brock Purdy in a heartbeat. We kinda thought Herbert would be a draw for an incoming HC but I think it may have actually been an impediment for Harbaugh.

Oh I don't think it's particularly close.

Alt may make the All Pro team as a rookie. He may ALREADY be better than Slater.

Great, great player.

Still a luxury item for those guys, though.

Nosir.

They can sit him for 4-6 weeks or he can figure out how to manage the pain. And honestly, 'manage the pain' isn't gonna be a ton harder for him this week than it will in 2 weeks.

You make a good point. Harbaugh has rebuilt that team as if they don't even have a franchise QB.

Best tackles in football and still hurt after two weeks

Crazy

Reminds me of when Andrew Luck had the best OL in football. He got sacked less than 20 times in 2018 (which is insane. Burrow normally tops that by Week 4), and still came away with an injury.

No wonder he retired so soon.

Ask him if he'd rather have Herbert or the $45 million/season he's due to count against the cap over the next 5 years to spend on his defense and I don't think there's a question what the answer would be.

Chargers going to Charger.

Megatron96 09-20-2024 01:59 PM

LAC might become a real problem. In two games Dobbins has 27 carries for 265 yds (9.9yds/carry). Their top to WRs don’t have a ton of yds but they have 3 TDs between them. And their defense already has 4 sacks. In the couple highlights I watched, they are controlling the LoS on both sides of the ball, and playing smart football.

Curiously, Herbert’s weird mental letdowns are more noticeable now that the rest of the team is playing better football. Maybe that’s just me. But it makes me realize just how much his first two HCs ****ed him up. And how Harbaugh is going to un**** him in one season.

But Justin’s not even healthy, and the Chargers are just dominating in their first two games.

Chargers may not Charger this season.

ThrobProng 09-20-2024 02:02 PM

How many of these QB deals work out?

I think you have to say Allen's deal. Mahomes. Probably Hurts because it's not that bad a contract so they're okay even if he may be a little bit below where he looked to be a few years back.

I guess Jackson's deal is okay? That $52 million base salary in 2026 is gonna sting but it's not that crazy anymore and it's relatively short term.

Still time for Burrow's deal to work out - one ring makes it all worthw......HAAAAAAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHA!

Sorry, couldn't get through that one with a straight face. Moving on...

Love's will probably go pretty well. Goff's seems reasonable and he's likely to be pretty steady and consistent. I think Mayfield's deal is gonna look like a steal.

Man - it must really suck not having Patrick Mahomes.

Sassy Squatch 09-20-2024 02:07 PM

Damn. Isn't he dealing with plantar fascitis as well?

His style of play it won't really hamper him much with a good tape job.

Pain is very manageable.

Only real concern is contact to that area during a tackle or just getting rolled up on.

Patrick Mahomes is tougher than Justin Herbert imo.

BossChief 09-20-2024 02:51 PM

If he has a HAS AND plantar fasciitis, they better sit him down 2-3 weeks, maybe 4.

But they wont.

ThaVirus 09-20-2024 04:25 PM

Guy’s averaging 23 attempts per game. This mf can’t tape that bitch up and run it against a conference and division rival, both of whom are likely to make the playoffs?

Our QB won a Super Bowl on a high ankle sprain.

Regular season is just part of a 20 game pre-season for the Playoffs. Mahomes would have rested if his ankle problem was in the regular season instead of Playoffs.

Even more importantly, remember who the Chargers play next week. They don't want to lose the Steelers game but there's zero doubt Harbaugh is going to throw everything they have at Chiefs/Chargers.

Chargers may not Charger this season.

They've played the worst team in the league and the Raiders, not much to go off of. Their schedule is fairly easy so maybe they can be a wild card, but I can't see more than that.

Hammock Parties 09-21-2024 02:42 AM

Again we will find out a usurper to the throne can't hack it when faced with something tiny like a sprain.

They are also idiots if they don't rest him for KC.

I get it, that’s why I said, “might.” They haven’t played anybody, and this weekend they’re still not playing anybody. But they play us in a couple weeks and then we’ll see how much they un****ed themselves I guess.

And I doubt they’re going to get far in the playoffs, if they even make it that far, throwing just 15 times a game.

Just saying they don’t look like a band of monkeys trying to **** a football, the way they did the last few seasons.

And it occurred to me that one way to avoid getting stymied by the 2-high shell is just have a massive OL and a couple good RBs, and just run it 30+ times. At 10 yds a clip no less.

I mean, just how many really good run defenses are there in the league right now anyway? Not very many imo.

The matchup between TJ and Joe Alt will be the one to watch, obviously. Rookie RT Joe Alt (6'8" 322-lbs.) through his first 126 snaps, has committed zero penalties, allowed only a single sack on 54 passing plays, and surrendered just two pressures. So we know he basically stoned Maxx Crosby.

While yeah, protecting your multi million dollar quarterback is essential. But they could have had Nabers.

ChiefGator 09-22-2024 03:10 PM

So.. just as I thought might happen, (and I almost never wish injuries on people).. Steelers re-aggravated the injury and he had to leave the game. Haven't seen it yet, but this is why it didn't make sense to play him today.

He is looking even more iffy for next weekend.

ChiefsFan63 09-22-2024 03:17 PM

San Diego or LA, Chargers gonna charger. They are wasting him. While as a Chiefs fan I applaud that, I hate to see a player continually have their career put at stake because of a clueless franchise.

Sassy Squatch 09-22-2024 03:19 PM

If either Slater or Alt can't go next weekend I'd bet they sit him.
