Flying out this morning from Orlando. Definitely the calm before the storm now with perfect weather outside.

siberian khatru 10-08-2024 06:17 AM

I live just outside Bradenton, I’m in a mandatory evacuation zone — Zone C, never thought it would get to the third tier. We’re leaving this morning for my sister’s home in Brunswick, GA.

TLO 10-08-2024 06:28 AM

Be safe all you Florida CPers.

Mr_Tomahawk 10-08-2024 06:39 AM

Is this one suppose to be worse than Irene or whatever they had a couple of years ago? Have some friends in Fort Myers.

deegs 10-08-2024 06:42 AM

Best of luck to any of you that’ll be affected by this. Be safe

O.city 10-08-2024 06:46 AM

It’s nearing the actual limit of what we think Max storm power can even be produced on earth. Scary.

Depends on which part of Florida you’re talking about. Storms this strong don’t typically hit the Gulf coast head on. I read that this one is the fourth-strongest Gulf hurricane ever recorded as well.

Parts of the Gulf coast are still littered with debris yet-to-be-removed, just sitting in dumpsters and heaps on the sides of roads. All of that stuff will become projectiles when the storm makes landfall (probably with 100+ mph winds).

FlaChief58 10-08-2024 07:41 AM

As of this morning, the track has it just south of the mouth of Tampa Bay, which is fantastic news for Tampa and st Pete. With an expected 15' surge, it would have been devastating. They'll still get a lot of wind and rain, and there will still be flooding, just not nearly as bad as it could be.
I'm about an hour north of Tampa. They're expecting 80mph winds here, and because there's still so much debris from the last storm, that is our biggest worry.

We're hoping that the low front will weaken it to a low 3 or even a cat 2 by the time it makes landfall.

I'm glad the Chiefs won last night, that may be the last good thing to happen for me for awhile.

This one is big. Small eye. Atmospheric pressure close to Katrina. 180 mph winds. I fear this thing will absolutely destroy anything in its path.

It was already sold out at a lot of gas stations yesterday. Everyone is already panicking and buying up all the water, tp, etc.

Gas? Of course. Water? Completely understandable.

TP?

Yeah, that tp will be super helpful when all that water hits. :spock:

Time lapse of what a 15' storm surge looks like.

People who know FL and hurricanes, do you think people are sheltering in that tall building in the background? Are those generally a safe place for someone who can't evacuate?

Only if you are located on the highest floors and are prepared to be stuck in that location with no way out for potentially several days.

Without electricity… that means no A/C.

Likely without plumbing as well.

So the answer would be to still get the hell out.

I guess the only time it makes sense is if you can't or won't evacuate for some reason, but you live in a nearby house. Taking shelter in that building could have saved your life.

It's common knowledge here that if you're under a mandatory evacuation order, and decide to stay, you're on your own. If you need help, it's not coming. People still regularly roll the dice though.

suzzer99 10-08-2024 12:22 PM

Right. But if you do stay, it's still better to be high and dry than dead. Assuming you don't die from dysentery or heat exhaustion or something after the storm.

Does a building like that just open their doors and let people come on in? I would think the people working in those buildings would have evacuated the state and left it locked up/boarded up/whatever. I guess in a dire enough circumstance people just break in and try to get to a top floor. Just not sure what that situation looks like.

Frazod 10-08-2024 12:27 PM

We're friends with a couple who moved to Florida and just bought a house in Punta Gorda last month. Doesn't look like a very good location according to that storm surge map.

Yes, if you made the decision to stay in a flood zone, I would say that building would be preferred over a single story building. That said, storm surge can take out pretty much any structure.

Yeah I'd be breaking in if my life was in danger.

I'm not in a tsunami zone in LA (I'm about 100' above sea level). But I have eyed a tall building on a hill above me just in case the water is coming up fast. But then again that kind of tsunami would probably be a civilization-destroying asteroid.

Not disputing that financial isn't a reason though. Folks overestimate their abilities and underestimate the disasters at the doorstep. Folks are stubborn, don't want the hassle, wish to protect their property and prefer to try to ride it out.
