Rainbarrel 12-07-2024 08:20 PM

He does blow goats, so

pugsnotdrugs19 12-07-2024 08:22 PM

He started last year for Houston and recorded a career-high 4 INTs, so I guess not far removed from being capable of that... I thought he retired?

Archie Bunker 12-07-2024 08:22 PM

We’ve reached the bottom of the barrel.

Rain Man 12-07-2024 08:30 PM

The guy has managed to have a long career in the league. If he can help, I'm all for it.

staylor26 12-07-2024 08:30 PM

He had a every good season last year. He was PFF's 39th ranked CB for example. Had 6 PBUs to go with 4 INTs. Many will scoff at this, but he's better than Nazeeh, and might allow them to move McDuffie back inside while using Conner more like a true S.

pugsnotdrugs19 12-07-2024 08:31 PM

Here's why I think they're doing this:

The slot issue. We can't put McDuffie back in there right now because it would leave us with J. Williams and Nazeeh on the outsides. Maybe with Nelson you can trust him on the outside and get Trent back in there when you need it.

He can call my mother a whore and IDGAF because he's good depth at a position where we need it badly right now.

I liked Fenton more than many but he hasn’t played NFL football since 2022.

Nelson started for a division winner last season.

RunKC 12-07-2024 08:37 PM

This is not surprising considering Dave Merritt wanted to kill Nazeeh Johnson last Friday

UChieffyBugger 12-07-2024 08:37 PM

Decent, experienced corner who was on a playoff team last season. He got four ints which was impressive. A move like this means guys like Johnson and Connor may not be on the field so much and it may allow Trent to play slot a lot more. I like the move tbh. Williams will be cb2 and Nelson can bring that vet knowledge on the other side when needed.

Hammock Parties 12-07-2024 08:38 PM

He'll do fine.

This guy is dead to me.

pugsnotdrugs19 12-07-2024 08:39 PM

It's too late in the year to ask Nelson to learn the slot position in this defense, which McDuffie himself said is far more complex than the outside CB spot. So it's definitely a move to allow McDuffie to kick inside and that would be massive in all aspects of the game.

That's probably the idea. Johnson had a very good grade in coverage last game. Johnson is coming back off an injury and barely has any playing experience so it's not a surprise that he's struggled.

Williams and Nelson on the outside and Trent in the slot is much more solid than Johnson, Connor and Trent imo. Nelson is a solid vet that should at least ne able to hold up on his side. That's better than what Johnson was giving us. He was getting picked on relentlessly.

Hopefully this can suffice until the playoffs and Watson comes back.

Keep in mind that Steven Nelson played under Bob Sutton and hated doing so. That should buy him a lot of goodwill here.

Xavien Howard has visited with the Bengals and Cowboys and is still unsigned. Nelson retired from what i gather so maybe he wasn't blown away with the offers he had?

The Bengals offered Xavien Howard a contract and he turned it down.

UChieffyBugger 12-07-2024 09:03 PM

All we need is just competent play from Williams and Nelson on the outside so Trent can get back to being a superstar slot cb. If Watson comes back then it would be perfect.

Remember Johnson is coming off injury and had never been a starter before. And Connor is a safety having to play slot which wasn't what he did in college. These two things have hurt the secondary.

MahomesMagic 12-07-2024 09:04 PM

Why not?

Exactly, they are a shit franchise.

The fact they decided not to sign Howard means nothing.

KC_Connection 12-07-2024 09:17 PM

Bring him home.

But if they do, it's probably not the best sign that Jaylen Watson will be back this year.

Don't think it means anything where Watson is concerned tbh. Nelson is needed now. Watson's timeline to come back would be the playoffs. Still five weeks away yet.

All of that happened much more recently than “seven years ago”.

He was the embodiment of Bob Sutton’s terrible defenses in KC.

He never played for Spags and has no previous experience in his defense.

Don't care. If Veach and Spags want him then that's good enough for me. I haven't got time to be bitter over old news. And acting like this fanbase is full of saints is nonsense.

Yeah, but a big part of the reason he left KC was that he hated Sutton's passive defensive scheme. That by default means that he'll like Spagnuolo's aggressive defensive scheme, and I think Pittsburgh's defense is closer to being aggressive than being passive. Nelson was serviceable there for several years.

I like this signing. I care nothing about the past. I'm just looking at the next ten weeks or so, and I think he can be a good addition.
