Golden Anniversary Ideas

The wife has put up with me for 41.5 years now and I want to do something special for our golden anniversary, but being the typical male that I am have nearly no imagination as to what are the best 5 star vacation spots in the US. Yeah I could do a google search but I want to hear from anyone here who have personal experience with such places.

Wait. Golden anniversary is year 50. You want an 8.5 year head start to plan?

That is a great question. Here recently we are huge fans of Christian theatrical shows like what is shown in Sight and Sound Theaters. I really just let her kind of direct our activities because I seriously just like being with her. She loves rustic settings and luxury accommodations/amenities. Site seeing nature settings, and shops OH my, she loves shops. Of course most of these things we experience in Branson, but I want to take her somewhere new and maybe have some new experiences.

Fiji or Bora Bora are pretty damn nice.

Japan is the cheapest it has been in years.

River cruise on a barge in Europe is very nice. Small crowds, mature and rarely kids.

I like the sound of all of those and so would she. At this time I was really just looking to stay within the US, but I could broaden that horizon.

If you otherwise haven't traveled outside of the US much, river cruises might be a cool way to feel like you've seen some variety in Europe. They're often all inclusive, so you know exactly what you're paying. And you get to see a ton of stuff.

The downside is it's not a super organic way of seeing a country - you're largely just hitting the touristy spots - but it's a pretty stress free way to see some pretty cool stuff.

I've never been on one of these cruises but we did explore the Rhine river valley when I lived there. It's freaking awesome.

Based on this I'd consider Sedona

Good combo of beautiful nature setting with an abundance of amazing access points, high end lodging/shopping, spas, art galleries, etc. It checks a lot of the boxes you've listed

There's some pros and cons of Sedona in June though. Its considered a shoulder month in that peak season is March-May and monsoon season is June-August. So in June it will be less crowded and expensive but you could run into some rain and it can start touching 90 (although lows will still be in the 50s).

Your criteria:

Preferably in the USA
Christian theatrical stuff
Rustic setting
Luxury accommodations
Shopping
Not Silver Dollar City

We throw that into the blender, and what comes out is ... Knoxville, TN.

If you take out the Christian shows, which is the most constricting requirement, we get ... Vail, Colorado.

If you take out the Christian shows and the shopping, we get ... Yellowstone National Park.

If we take out the Christian shows, shopping, and luxury accommodations, we get ... the parks of southern Utah and northern Arizona.

If we take out the Christian shows, shopping, luxury accommodations, and rustic settings, we get ... Key West, Florida.

If we take out the Christian shows, shopping, luxury accommodations, and rustic settings, and in the USA, we get ... Tuscany, Italy.

If we take out the Christian shows, shopping, luxury accommodations, and rustic settings, USA requirement, and not Silver Dollar City, we get ... Silver Dollar City.

I suggest some virtual reality goggles . She can go anywhere in the world and it's 100% like YOU R THERE. While she's wearing those you can sit on the sofa and drink beer. Win Win!

Yeah, that was my thought exactly.

A few years ago our daughters treated us to a very special dinner at "top of the Rock" for our 50th anniversary.
Only time I have worn a suit in years and it felt kind of funny. :D

Oooo, I don't know. I have an intense fear of heights, especially in tall buildings or towers. I have been on 3 flights in my life and have never had a window seat.

You could head to Kentucky then head to Nashville. Yes, I am serious, if you like Christian attractions. I have talked with a lot of folks who love the Noah's Ark Park and other attractions nearby. Even folks who are not overly religious. There are some great hotels in Louisville as well. You could then head to Nashville to finish your trip. Just a thought based on your comments above.

Not ever been to either place, and would definitely be interested in the Noah's Ark.

If you're the active type, you can go to Turkey and climb Mt. Ararat to see the remains of Noah's Ark.
