Urc Burry 03-05-2025 08:22 AM

It’s a business.. and if he wants to maximize his earnings than so be it.

But he’s one guy I want to do right by. Just a true warrior and you’ve probably never heard him speak

TEX 03-05-2025 08:23 AM

Chicago was all set to back up the Brinks truck to sign Trey Smith...Poles knows Thuney and has said that his number one priority is to strengthen their OL, so Caleb won't be running for his life...On our side, Thuney is expensive and is getting up there in age, so this makes sense. Id hate to see him go, but its a business.

Dunerdr 03-05-2025 08:24 AM

Good. He’s at that age. He can still play but it could go at any moment. This makes the Smith tag make a little more sense.

pugsnotdrugs19 03-05-2025 08:25 AM

Kingsley to LG..

staylor26 03-05-2025 08:25 AM

But but Kingsley is a wasted draft pick and he's obviously not going to start next year too!

Rainbarrel 03-05-2025 08:25 AM

Surprised he wouldn't retire. Unless he wants to see how the other 90% live

nychief 03-05-2025 08:25 AM

Rapoport says done deal to da Bears.

smithandrew051 03-05-2025 08:26 AM

Love the player but a trade would be good if the comp is adequate.

DrunkBassGuitar 03-05-2025 08:26 AM

I don't like it but I understand it and it probably makes sense and I trust the front office but damn I'd hate to see him go. It seems like a good decision even if from a fan perspective it sucks

-King- 03-05-2025 08:27 AM

Unexpected but makes great sense. We don't need the highest paid iOL in the league and trading him would allow us to balance out the cap more and address the real premium positions better

nychief 03-05-2025 08:27 AM

Wonder what the return is.... going to be SURPRISINGLY low, methinks.

Only to those of you rushing to bitch about Trey Smith...

wazu 03-05-2025 08:28 AM

So regardless of compensation, it looks like that clears up $27M in cap space. I'll take it.

I’ll be happy with a 4.

I know you fully expected this. You've been calling for a Thuney trade since day one. You're so smart.

SHOWTIME 03-05-2025 08:29 AM

A Thuney trade gives an additional $16M in cap space. Probably the smart thing to do considering he's not even under contract for 2026.

I'll be happy with just about anything. Clearing the 27m off the cap for a guard is worth it.

pugsnotdrugs19 03-05-2025 08:30 AM

Pretty sure it could be even more than 16 million depending on the trade terms. Possible that Chicago ate some base salary in order to ease compensation.

I might not have "expected" a trade, but I certainly brought up the possibility that retirement or something was coming down the line with Thuney.

The point is you clearly didn't even consider the possiblity, because you're a bitch that just wants to bitch.

pugsnotdrugs19 03-05-2025 08:31 AM

Future 4th rounder per Rap.

Smith + the LT they’re about to sign + Kingsley.

Long and short term solution.

Yeah, it makes more sense now. Sucks to lose our best lineman but at most we had him for another season.

Why would the Bears trade a pick for a guy close to retirement? They're not ready to win anytime soon.

After trading arguably their best OL, I really think it's going to be Stanley. They'll probably draft a guy like Benton too. They aren't ****ing around.

Zero chance any of this is a surprise to him.

Sassy Squatch 03-05-2025 08:50 AM

So 10 million dead cap and 16 million freed up, right?

Edit: Almost 11 million dead cap. Who cares though, sunk cost and the 16 million freed up will be very useful.

smithandrew051 03-05-2025 08:51 AM

Also, what a ****ing signing Thuney was.

Super reliable. Always played at a high level at LG. Did his best at LT to provide a bit of stability temporarily. Hard to fault him too much for the Super Bowl.

Then, you flip out of the deal for pick.

Great work here.

RunKC 03-05-2025 08:51 AM

I’ve been saying for damn near 2 months that I was extremely impressed with Kingsley playing G. He was really good against an elite DT. This must have sold them on this move.

Thoughts on Joe Thuney to Chicago

Trading LG Joe Thuney frees up $16 million, space that can help sign the tagged RG Trey Smith to a long-term extension. I wouldn't say that just yet. That's the only nitpick I have about this deal is that the comp is pushed back a year.

Chicago wasn't as bad as their record last year and just shored up their biggest weakness in the last 24 hours.

I'd expect this pick to be in the 15-20 range of R4.

BWillie 03-05-2025 08:54 AM

Well that gets some money off the books so that is good I guess. If there is a guy I want on my team out of Humphrey, Smith and Thuney it is Thuney though.

Cant pay 3 interior olineman that kinda money so makes sense.

Buehler445 03-05-2025 08:54 AM

Honestly I’d rather keep and pay Thuney than keep and pay Smith. This is me 100% acknowledging I’m understating the age difference.

Anyway, thanks for the work, Joe. Nothing but love from this dude.

Bears don't have a 4th this year and they weren't giving up 72 I'd imagine. So the choice was probably a 2025 5th or 2026 4th.

Dante84 03-05-2025 08:56 AM

Veach hates 33 year olds who need to get paid.

To get a future 4th for a G is a huge win.

SHOWTIME 03-05-2025 08:56 AM

Love the player, but great timing. Sorry you have to move to Chicago Joe.

Oh, and Russini is a goofball.

Dunerdr 03-05-2025 08:58 AM

I will now concede that it’s a possibility that they see Kingsley as a future left guard. I still expect him to get some tackle run. You’d have to feel really ****ing good about someone at LG and it’s not what we saw in the Super Bowl.

Bitch and moan about what exactly? Ive liked some of the things the chiefs have done or are rumored to do so far and I've disliked some things. Such is life. And when you're on a discussion forum, you discuss those things.

TribalElder 03-05-2025 09:03 AM

Business side of the game is soooo dirty

Chiefs: Hey Joe we made a bunch of dumb decisions and really ****ed us when it comes to LT do you think you could slide over and cover LT for us

Joe: Sure Chiefs, I'm a team player

Chiefs in the Offseason: Hey Joe, we are going to ship you over to Chicago where they have a QB who is still figuring out their pronouns and paints their nails, I know the Bears are extremely dysfunctional but we are going to save 14 million on our cap space by sending you to that disaster of a team.

Joe: Okay......

TomBarndtsTwin 03-05-2025 09:03 AM

Well, he's 33 and was on the last year of his contract anyway ($27 mil. cap hit).

If he was considering retirement after this next season or the Chiefs weren't wanting to do an extension (for age concerns, etc.), this makes some sense.

This also explains why they decided to work towards a long term deal w/ Trey.

So likely King or Morris to LG? I assume King?

I guess this frees up some money for FA (assuming Bears are taking on whole contract). Will we have any dead money for Thuney?

Sounds like we're not re-signing Reid either.

So getting the deal with Trey done, likely re-signing Bolton and then . . . . . . . . . . ?

LMAO Wut? We're doing Thuney a huge solid here. Already been reported he's expected to sign a 20+ million AAV extension in Chicago. He wasn't getting that here.
