It’s a business.. and if he wants to maximize his earnings than so be it.
But he’s one guy I want to do right by. Just a true warrior and you’ve probably never heard him speak |
Chicago was all set to back up the Brinks truck to sign Trey Smith...Poles knows Thuney and has said that his number one priority is to strengthen their OL, so Caleb won't be running for his life...On our side, Thuney is expensive and is getting up there in age, so this makes sense. Id hate to see him go, but its a business.
|
Good. He’s at that age. He can still play but it could go at any moment. This makes the Smith tag make a little more sense.
|
Kingsley to LG..
|
But but Kingsley is a wasted draft pick and he's obviously not going to start next year too!
|
Surprised he wouldn't retire. Unless he wants to see how the other 90% live
|
Rapoport says done deal to da Bears.
|
Love the player but a trade would be good if the comp is adequate.
|
I don't like it but I understand it and it probably makes sense and I trust the front office but damn I'd hate to see him go. It seems like a good decision even if from a fan perspective it sucks

Thuney traded to Chicago

Unexpected but makes great sense. We don't need the highest paid iOL in the league and trading him would allow us to balance out the cap more and address the real premium positions better
|
Wonder what the return is.... going to be SURPRISINGLY low, methinks.

So regardless of compensation, it looks like that clears up $27M in cap space. I'll take it.
|
Quote:
would be surprised if it's more than a 4th. |
I’ll be happy with a 4.

A Thuney trade gives an additional $16M in cap space. Probably the smart thing to do considering he's not even under contract for 2026.

|
Pretty sure it could be even more than 16 million depending on the trade terms. Possible that Chicago ate some base salary in order to ease compensation.

The point is you clearly didn't even consider the possiblity, because you're a bitch that just wants to bitch. |
Future 4th rounder per Rap.

Nice. Solid move. He sucked in the Super Bowl.

Probably smart to not give an extension to a 33 year old.

A move that doesn’t feel good but probably is good.
|
2026 4th rounder per Schefty.
|
I guess this makes the Smith signing more palatable.

Love Thuney but hope his team sucks ass now. |
Thread title needs adjustment

The point was maybe they're paying Smith because something is happening with Thuney. |
Smith + the LT they’re about to sign + Kingsley.
Long and short term solution. |

Why would the Bears trade a pick for a guy close to retirement? They're not ready to win anytime soon. |

Boo

Gotta see the whole picture before evaluating.

Stanley or Robinson are coming. Smith will sign his deal by Sunday.

Kingsley slides in at LG
Perfect |
Getting younger, shedding salary, getting picks...what's not to like?

Perfect!
And because it's the Bears, the pick is guaranteed to translate into an All-Pro future HOFer. |

Mahomes is getting nervous…
Hope they don’t dick around and end up with a worse OL. |
def hoping this leads to us getting a LT
i mean that has to be the plan yeah? |
Stanley is always hurt. I'm not into it.

Zero chance any of this is a surprise to him. |
So 10 million dead cap and 16 million freed up, right?
Edit: Almost 11 million dead cap. Who cares though, sunk cost and the 16 million freed up will be very useful. |

And what I'm talking about is that you've done nothing but bitch and moan for the last month. |
Also, what a ****ing signing Thuney was.
Super reliable. Always played at a high level at LG. Did his best at LT to provide a bit of stability temporarily. Hard to fault him too much for the Super Bowl. Then, you flip out of the deal for pick. Great work here. |
I’ve been saying for damn near 2 months that I was extremely impressed with Kingsley playing G. He was really good against an elite DT. This must have sold them on this move.

Thoughts on Joe Thuney to Chicago

Trading LG Joe Thuney frees up $16 million, space that can help sign the tagged RG Trey Smith to a long-term extension. Chicago wasn't as bad as their record last year and just shored up their biggest weakness in the last 24 hours. I'd expect this pick to be in the 15-20 range of R4. |
Well that gets some money off the books so that is good I guess. If there is a guy I want on my team out of Humphrey, Smith and Thuney it is Thuney though.
Cant pay 3 interior olineman that kinda money so makes sense. |
Honestly I’d rather keep and pay Thuney than keep and pay Smith. This is me 100% acknowledging I’m understating the age difference.
Anyway, thanks for the work, Joe. Nothing but love from this dude. |

Veach hates 33 year olds who need to get paid.
To get a future 4th for a G is a huge win. |
Mods, if you are going to merge threads, at least change the title to "Thuney traded to Chicago" since they are no longer discussing the trade. it is done.
|
Love the player, but great timing. Sorry you have to move to Chicago Joe.
Oh, and Russini is a goofball. |
I will now concede that it’s a possibility that they see Kingsley as a future left guard. I still expect him to get some tackle run. You’d have to feel really ****ing good about someone at LG and it’s not what we saw in the Super Bowl.
|
Great move.
Love Thuney and am appreciative of his contributions. |

Business side of the game is soooo dirty
Chiefs: Hey Joe we made a bunch of dumb decisions and really ****ed us when it comes to LT do you think you could slide over and cover LT for us Joe: Sure Chiefs, I'm a team player Chiefs in the Offseason: Hey Joe, we are going to ship you over to Chicago where they have a QB who is still figuring out their pronouns and paints their nails, I know the Bears are extremely dysfunctional but we are going to save 14 million on our cap space by sending you to that disaster of a team. Joe: Okay...... |
Well, he's 33 and was on the last year of his contract anyway ($27 mil. cap hit).
If he was considering retirement after this next season or the Chiefs weren't wanting to do an extension (for age concerns, etc.), this makes some sense. This also explains why they decided to work towards a long term deal w/ Trey. So likely King or Morris to LG? I assume King? I guess this frees up some money for FA (assuming Bears are taking on whole contract). Will we have any dead money for Thuney? Sounds like we're not re-signing Reid either. So getting the deal with Trey done, likely re-signing Bolton and then . . . . . . . . . . ? |
Caliendo next man up!

Thanks for salvaging the season, and for everything else, Joe!

Smith gets Thuneys cap space. Good move.
