Dear Diane,

I stood before the wall today to honor the fallen crew members from the first mission of our B-17 squadron. It is a pathetic little wooden wall with the names hand painted with a cheap artist's paintbrush. Nothing much to look at but the emotions I felt were overwhelming. Good young and old men and women had died in support of a cause we all believe in. I felt at once proud, sad, bitter, and truthfully relieved and ashamed.

Proud because when we come together the might of the right cause we are fighting for is so simplistic yet so powerful.

Sad because such a tragedy had befell these fine people I had just got to meet and in one case know.

Bitter because I know this has only just begun and that the Axis will not give up in its pursuit of savage power and that more will die.

Relieved that it was not me and someone else was here mourning my passing.

Ashamed, that I felt relieved and that I had fellow men and women of the Axis that so want power that they wreak this havoc on us all. Ashamed that I am happy that I contribute to their deaths and ashamed that we are all just pawns to be played by world leaders in a giant game of checkers.

So Diane say a prayer for all of us, know that I miss your sweet caress and the warmth we bring to each other.

I vote to leave all the dead on the wall. If you get killed again, we can start putting ticks next to the names. Just another interesting stat to keep track of.

Oooooo, yeah, we can paint gravestones on their names - kinda like bombs on the side of a plane when a run is complete. Then he could look like this by the end of the runs
