Richard Smith Cut?

Just saw it on Sportsline. Apparently Chris Horn's game sealed his fate.

Rain Man 09-27-2004 04:10 PM

Wh-wh-what?

Deberg_1990 09-27-2004 04:10 PM

810 just reported it as well....

Hammock Parties 09-27-2004 04:11 PM

Chris Horn caught his first two pro passes.

Richard Smith did not.

Oh well.

Clearing room for a trade, perhaps?

They are probably

1) Bringing back Huard (though I'd prefer Couch).
2) Expecting they can get Richard Smith on the Practice Squad after his ineffective performance in the reg. season.

htismaqe 09-27-2004 04:14 PM

No big loss, IMO. I know he was popular with some here, but what did he really show? In his only true game action, the QB had to drag him around by his pads to get him to line up correctly.

As far as his preseason showing, Larry Johnson returned a kickoff for a TD in preseason last year. Still doesn't mean anything.

HolmeZz 09-27-2004 04:15 PM

I hate this organization's decision-making.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived WR Richard Smith.

Chiefs | Huard Re-signed - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 27 Sep 2004 14:58:52 -0700

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed QB Damon Huard to a two-year contract

I guess those 2 drops against the Panthers was all the game time chance he was going to get.

Good call!

ChiefsFanatic 09-27-2004 04:18 PM

Huard will never see the field. Why waste the veteran cap money? Hell, Booth could be our third QB for league minimum, and we would not lose anything.

Archie Bunker 09-27-2004 04:19 PM

I am glad Horn contributed and he seems more ready than Smtih. Hopefully Smith will be put on the practice squad.

I want Tim Couch... but it sounds like he's injured for a few more weeks.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4649/news

Recommendation: Couch has had a lousy 2004 so far. First the Browns sign Jeff Garcia in the spring and wouldn't let Couch work out at their training complex in the offseason because they feared he'd get injured and they'd be on the hook for his last two years on his deal. Then after two months of haggling with the Packers he signs with them but gets a sore arm in camp because he didn't get the proper off-season work in. The good news is that Dr. James Andrews checked him out last week and diagnosed two-to-four weeks of rest and no surgery. Once Couch's arm is okay, he's expected to sign with the Colts. As a 27-year old with 59 career NFL starts, Couch would be an ideal backup for Peyton Manning.

Katipan 09-27-2004 04:29 PM

I'm happy about Horn.

Rick 09-27-2004 04:33 PM

That move will probably be the turning point in our season.......

If we signed Couch, I would only be happy if he was #2 (although I doubt if he would be better than Collins, because of his knowledge of the offense) because I would rather not tie up cap money in a third stringer that is never going to see the field.

I'd want him for the #3 spot. I don't think he can possibly be very $$ right now. He's almost out of the leauge. He certainly isn't going to get a big signing bonus from anyone and his contract would probably be an incentive laden deal.

Yeah, but he would get the 4 year veteran minimum instead of the I'm-just-glad-to-be-in-the-nfl minimum.

Isn't that what Huard is getting?

He's been in the league 8 years.

Baby Lee 09-27-2004 04:46 PM

Best guess, this move was prompted by Rex Grossmann being out for the season more than anything. It was OK to waive Huard when nobody's really looking to fill slots, but we don't want Chicago slurping him up.

dirk digler 09-27-2004 04:50 PM

Smart move to sign Huard back. Alot of posters last year was busting on the Broncos for only keeping 2 Qb's.

HolmeZz 09-27-2004 04:52 PM

My look on it is that we ever needed to put Huard on the field we wouldn't be in a spot to win anyway.

Let the Bears have'em.

I think he might be getting more. IIRC the terms of his contract were not formally announced, and that usually means more than the minimum.

But in my previous post, I said that we could sign Booth to be our third stringer, that way we could list him as emergency QB, or even have him fill in at receiver or on special teams if needed. And we could just pay him the minimum, and his agent would not insist on a two year contract.

Sure-Oz 09-27-2004 04:54 PM

Glad to see horn make the team and do well he is our new Lacharigter!!

jAZ 09-27-2004 04:55 PM

Couch and Huard were signed for similiar base salaries. I can't tell if Damon got a Signing bonus, but Couch got a small one. Couch's contract was 1 year and Damon's was 2 years making 600,000 this season and 665000 next (according to NFLPA.org).

Quote:

Andrew Kessler, an associate of Couch's agent, Tom Condon, said the deal with Green Bay calls for Couch to count $1.25 million against the Packers' salary cap this year, including a base salary of $625,000 and a signing bonus of $625,000.

Couch has the potential to make as much as $4 million, based on incentives. One would be met if he is on the field for at least half of the Packers' snaps. That seems unlikely since Favre has started 208 consecutive games and rarely misses playing time.

Ultra Peanut 09-27-2004 05:00 PM

Kinda disappointing, after all of the hype...

I doubt that he did. He was not the overall number 1 pick.

Here is an interesting article about how the minimums work.

I'm assuming you are talking about WR John Booth (formerly) from our practice squad?

Is he a legit QBOTF candidate?

I'd rather have Couch at a few hundred K more cap space with the potential that a #1 overall QB comes with, than a purely "emergency" QB/WR that we cut from our practice squad.

HolmeZz 09-27-2004 05:02 PM

CF, is the Britney thing in your sig fr0m a movie or something?

FringeNC 09-27-2004 05:03 PM

I'm really surprised by this. I thought Smith may have had some long-term big upside. I guess not. Hopefully, Parker will.

Expect him to show up on the practice squad to work on that long-term-upside. I'm guessing they thing Horn has more short-term upside at this point.

OmahaChief 09-27-2004 05:08 PM

What good does it do to keep Huard at this point? He is not the QBOTF, will probably never see the field as a Chief, hell Collins never even gets to take snaps. Lastly at this point in the season we already look like a tank job so why not keep Smith at a spot we need and let him grow. Terrible move to let Smith go and bring back Huard. The only reason I could see to do so is at the chance to trade Huard for a pick should someone go down.

Well, I doubt that Couch will ever be a number 1 again, and if he is it will only be for a bad team. I don't think that very many third string QB's have a realistic chance at becoming starters, and especially not third string QB's who have been starters and are now third stringers.

Well, it probably was, but my 30 year old worse half, and my 8 year old daughter sure do seem to like it. I have only had to watch that crap 20 times or so.

Trent Green and Vinnie Testeverde two examples among the 32 starting QBs today.

Couch is worth the risk to me.

No matter who the player is, our #3 QB should be used for someone we view as a potential QBOTF. Huard and Booth aren't that guy it seems.

If we were any other team, I would agree. However we are the Chiefs. As an orginization we have never developed our own QB. When we have attempted to, it has been a disaster.

And since DV will probably only be here another year, the new head coach will probably want to not develop his own third string QBOTF.

Other than that, you have convinced me that Couch or Huard would be better than Booth. (Picking Booth was really just a comment on the need to save cap dollars wherever possible)

Maybe that's why DV chose Huard over a QBOTF candidate this season.

Oh well....

Smith seemed to have a few flashes in preseason - but that was preseason. Can't put a lot of stock in that I guess..

whoman69 09-27-2004 06:38 PM

If the losing continues, I like to see DV get a pair and cut Kennison and Morton and put the young guys in there. If the present is going to be bad, we may as well be thinking about the future.
