I don’t love these movies as much as the 007 flicks, but I have to admit Tom Cruise is a GOAT.

At this point, I think he has to make anyone’s action movie Mount Rushmore.

We went through this some time ago and i think the conclusion was inescapable that, while Skyfall is the best movie of all of them, the MI series has bested Bond since it first came on the scene in the early 90s..

And somehow it keeps getting better.

Cruise may be the last great 'movie star' - you put him on a poster and that movie is going to do well. While Hemsworth is out there making movies for Netflix during what should be his prime and Vin coasting on inertia, Cruise is 60 and throwing out bangers.

O.city 06-20-2023 09:30 AM

Yeah, the MI series has surpassed it all for me. It just keeps getting better.

I really enjoy the series, I just hope Part Two doesn't end with Cruise being a burned-out sad sack who is easily outperformed by a "strong female character" who is 115 lbs dripping wet, a third of his age, and has very little training or experience.

Hammock Parties 06-20-2023 01:08 PM

think he completed the mission?

Is Kathleen Kennedy responsible for it?

I remember that debate well. I selfishly wanted to separate the Brosnan Bonds from the Craig Bonds when comparing. That 90s camp really bogs down the Bond legacy. Don’t get me wrong, I still love them, especially Goldeneye, but I can’t argue in earnest that they’re actually good movies.

The MIs are fantastical, sure, but they did a good job of not taking it too far.

ThaVirus 06-20-2023 02:28 PM

Still, there’s just something about these movies that I don’t love. Looks like there has been six of them by now and I can’t say I can tell you what the plot was in any one of them.

I think I remember one they were trying to stop the bad guy from getting an antimatter bomb or something? That was probably the one with Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Maybe it was MI 3..? I’m not sure.

Let's play a game. I'm going to post the synopsis of every as-of-now released Mission Impossible movie and you try to match it with the title.

A. Ethan goes back in action and works with professional thief Nyah Nordoff-Hall (Thandiwe Newton). The duo go undercover to stop rogue IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) (who is also Nyah's former lover) from stealing a deadly virus, starting a pandemic, and selling the antidote to the highest bidder.

B. Ethan and the entire IMF are framed for the bombing of the Kremlin while investigating an individual known only as "Cobalt" (Michael Nyqvist). Ethan and three other agents are left to stop Cobalt from starting a global nuclear war.

C. Ethan Hunt comes under threat from the Syndicate. Faced with the IMF's disbandment, Hunt assembles his team for their mission to prove the Syndicate's existence and bring the organization down by any means necessary.

D. When an IMF mission to recover plutonium goes wrong, the world is faced with the threat of the Apostles, a terrorist group formed by former members of the rogue nation called the Syndicate. As Ethan Hunt takes it upon himself to fulfill the original mission, the CIA begins to question his loyalty and his motives.

E. Ethan Hunt is framed for the murder of his IMF team during a botched mission in Prague and accused of selling government secrets to an arms dealer known only as "Max". On the run, Ethan seeks to uncover the real traitor and clear his name.

F. Ethan is engaged to Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan), who is unaware of his true job. He assembles a team to face the elusive arms and information broker Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who intends to sell a mysterious dangerous object known as "The Rabbit's Foot".

And here are the titles:

1. Mission: Impossible
2. Mission: Impossible 2
3. Mission: Impossible III
4. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
5. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
6. Mission: Impossible - Fallout

a. MI2
b. MI 4 Ghost Protocol
C Rogue Nation
D. Fallout

B: Ghost Protocol
C: Rogue Nation
D: Fallout
E: MI1
F: MI3

The second was terrible, everyone was wearing like 4-5 fake faces each. I lost interest in the series after that. I’ve seen parts of a couple of the later ones when flipping through the channels at hotels or whatever, but that second film really turned me off of the franchise.

However, at the same time it also had one of the greatest lines ever in cinema -

Mission Commander Swanbeck: [during a breifing in Sevile, Spain] Ms. Hall and Ambrose had a relationship which he took very seriously... she walked away and he's been wanting her back ever since. We believe she's our surest and quickest way of locating him.

Ethan Hunt: And then what?

Mission Commander Swanbeck: Make sure she continues to see him, gets him to confide in her, and report to you.

Ethan Hunt: You made it sound as if I was recruiting her for her skills as a thief.

Mission Commander Swanbeck: Well then I misled you, or you made the wrong assumption. Either way, we are asking her to resume her prior relationship - not do anything she hasn't already done... voluntarily, I might add.

Ethan Hunt: No. She's got no training for this kind of thing.

Mission Commander Swanbeck: What? To go to bed with a man and lie to him? She's a woman - she's got all the training she needs.
