The chase for the #1 overall pick

First off, no this isn't intended to be a kick to the nuts... I read the other article that was posted and when looking at the 2, 3 and 4 win teams with 4 games to go - things could get interested if KC and/or JAX decide to win 2 of 4.

KC is set up well with 3 of 4 road games. Jags have a mixed schedule.
Eagles, Raiders and Panthers... they're only 1 game out and anything happens if KC or JAX wins 2.

Browns, Cards and Lions all have interesting matchups as well that (depending on how the tiebreakers work out), maybe they're all in the mix as well.

It's going to be a nail biting 4 weeks for those hoping to get the #1 pick. (ok, that last part was a kick in the nuts)

KC (2-10)
@ Browns
@ Raiders
Colts
@ Broncos

Jags (2-10)
Jets
@ Dolphins
Patriots
@ Titans

Eagles (3-9)
@ Bucs
Bengals
Redskins
@ Giants

Raiders (3-9)
Broncos
Chiefs
@ Panthers
@ Chargers

Panthers (3-9)
Falcons
@ Chargers
Raiders
@ Saints

Browns (4-8)
Chiefs
Redskins
@ Broncos
@ Steelers

Cardinals (4-8)
@ Seahawks
Lions
Bears
@ 49ers

Titans (4-8)
@ Colts
Jets
@ Packers
Jags

Lions (4-8)
@ Packers
@ Cardinals
Falcons
Bears

Chargers (4-8)
@ Steelers
Panthers
@ Jets
Raiders

Geno Smith or bust

Mile High Mania 12-03-2012 11:37 AM

The Cardinals quickly went south after their 4-0 start. And, looking at that list - yes, Denver needs to finish strong because the other 3 teams are all in contention for the #1 pick, so that's not a ringing endorsement by any means for the division.

Unsmooth-Moment 12-03-2012 11:37 AM

Something tells me the Raiders will sneak ahead of us.

Hog's Gone Fishin 12-03-2012 11:37 AM

Quinn will finally show his god given talent . We end up 5-11

Deberg_1990 12-03-2012 11:38 AM

My gut tells me the Chiefs win 1 more game.

htismaqe 12-03-2012 11:38 AM

I just have this nagging feeling that the Raiders are going to get it and we're gonna pick 3rd or 4th. :(

The Franchise 12-03-2012 11:39 AM

I think the Eagles get it. No way they win a game with that remaining schedule.

Hopefully the Chiefs go back to sucking for the rest of the year.

Bump 12-03-2012 11:40 AM

we are going to beat the browns and raiders and go 4-12 and get the #5 pick or some shit, drafting some lineman and live in misery forever.

Eagles, Cardinals, Lions, Browns and then Chiefs is how I'd rank the top toughest remaining schedules.

The Chiefs will somehow fuck this up and we will not get Geno. =/

They beat us once. If they beat us twice, but we win 2 more games, it is definitely them. If we split, I think it is us because we had the last place schedule.

I don't know any of that for sure, but that's how I see it.

Worst possible outcome...

Yeah, I'm kinda thinking that if things roll a certain way - if you're picking at #3-5, maybe you have better chances of trading down and staying within the top 12 in R1, but getting another R2. You could still likely get one of the top QBs.

Unless you just have major wood for Geno... this could be a good thing.

Pretty sure it will be the Raiders. Look at their remaining schedule, it's pathetic and I don't see them beating anyone but the Chiefs. Their sos will be low. And it's currently weaker than ours without even accounting for their remaining schedule. I think it's like .490 right now and ours is in the low 500s.

That game against the Raiders will be the most important Chief game in a LONG time.

It's not so much that it's necessary that they have the 1st pick. It's their evaluation of their picks that bother me. Their picking the wrong guys. The scouting under Pioli has been absolute shit. Someone should of been shit canned years ago. Hell they would of never took a guy like Kapernick probably because he has too many tattoos. :spock:

keg in kc 12-03-2012 12:49 PM

I can't really fault them for that. I wouldn't have taken Kapernick, either, not in the range we're talking about.

Mile High Mania 12-03-2012 12:52 PM

Drafts are funny though, especially when you look at the top of the draft... hell, the rookie cap makes things much easier for teams. And, if you have a big need at a given position (say QB) and you take him 10-12 spots higher than the experts project, so be it. If that's your need - go fill it.

He was taken late in the 2nd rnd last year. They knew then we needed a QB. Who did we take in the 2nd that's even seeing the field?

This really easy to calculate for two teams in the same division since their schedules are near identical.

Difference 1. Chiefs play the Raiders while the Raiders play the Chiefs. But we don't care about the tiebreaker unless the have identical records. These cancel out.

Diffence 2. AFC east opponents. We play the Bills while the
Raiders play Miami. Small difference by the end of the season.

Difference 3. AFC South opponents. We play the Colts while the Raiders play Jacksonville. The Colts are going to have a much stronger record than Jax by the end of the season. This difference will be decisive.

We will have the stronger SOS and will draft after the Raiders if we are tied.

BossChief 12-03-2012 11:21 PM

The thought of Geno Smith in silver and black makes me sick.

We need to lose these next two games really badly.

Not for me.

I won't have optimism until we lose to the Raiders in 2 weeks. If we win then I believe we're screwed.

DC.chief 12-04-2012 08:39 AM

I believe we still end up with the top pick and grab Geno but there are even some scenarios where we don't get the #1 pick but still end up with him. I don't think we need to panic.

Not only that but it won't be the end of the world if we grab a stud defender with our first and grab a qb with our second. Check out whats going on in seattle right now. For the record though i'd prefer we went Geno/Austin/Amerson and yeah we'd probably have to trade up at some point to make that all happen.

Christ, do people realize how close we came to losing to the Panthers. Basically an easy dropped TD pass by LaFelle (sp?). Consider all the injuries in the secondary right now too. Not expecting Brady Quinn to play up to that level every week. Do we even face a defense as bad as Carolina's the rest of the season? I'm thinking we have a shot to beat the Raiders but the rest of the games are likely losses.

KCDC 12-04-2012 09:35 AM

Sadly, it is looking most likely that we will get the #3 pick. The Jags have only one winnable game (Jets), which leaves them at 3-13. The Raiders might beat the Chiefs or Panthers, but their team is a bigger mess than ours. If they lose to the Chiefs at home, they are in the driver's seat.

Sadly, we have a chance to beat both the Browns and the Raiders. I think we probably beat the Raiders and have to hope that the Jags and Raiders find a win somewhere.

Division games like the series between the Raiders in Chiefs in recent years are ALWAYS a crapshoot. A team's performance during the season almost always has zero affect on that game's outcome.

Jaguars have several winnable games. Jets, Tits, and Dolphins are all possible wins.

They're just as probable as the Chiefs beating the Raiders (again, I repeat myself, this is a DIVISION GAME, where both teams usually suck themselves to death) or the Browns (who are a bad team but are playing better as of late just like us, and will also be getting us in the second week of a two-game road trip).

The Colts and Donks games are near unwinnable as long as both teams are fighting for playoff seeding, which I think is likely for both.

I think all the #1 contenders have a few winnable games. Considering how each teams season has gone, tough to know what is going to happen.

basically been saying this for weeks

people saying we wouldn't win another game simply don't understand how much the football universe hates us.

No, Foles sucks. Kevin Kolb was a more talented QB.

Eagles will need a new guy.

eagles will be in a position to get a guy

they are also quietly vying for the #1 spot :cuss:

All the 4 win teams are basically out.

If the Chiefs lose to the Faiders then Oakland is basically out.

Chiefs,Jags,Philly .... with Chiefs controlling their own destiny

I think every team has 2 winnable games on their schedule. I would hate for the Raiders to get the first pick again, unless its a bust.

Looks like Raiders have 3 winnable games (counting Chiefs)
Jags have 1 winnable game
Chiefs have 2 winnable games (counting Raiders)

I would say odds are Jags.

You don't think the Jags could beat the Jets or Dolphins? Did you see their game Sunday?

The nfl would live to have Geno in Philadelphia. Geno vs RG3 2x a year

I don't know. They host the 5-7 Jets who've lost 3 of 5, go to 5-7 Miami who's lost 4 of 5, host the Patriots who will probably cream them and then have the return game in Tennessee, who they beat a couple weeks ago. That looks to me like 3 potentially winnable games.

Yep, and the NFL finds ways to get what they want, like Eli in New York, and Mark Sanchez (the new latino face of the NFL, they hoped - my theory...) there as well.
