Could There Be A Greater Tribute To Mike Sweeney Than This?

What Sweeney is doing has a very familair feel to it. The feel is 1980 and with Sweeney now having the best batting average in baseball and absolutely on fire, batting .583 over his last 10 games, and at .365, you know what is coming and why the heck not?

Folks, Mike Sweeney has a chance here to make a run for glory.

.400

or if he can't get to .400, .390 then

Both marks prestigious in their own way.

But Sweeney is really playing like a can get a hit, anytime, anywhere, anyplace.

And for those who doubt he could possibly go for it, here's a stat for you to sink your teeth into.

George Brett (1980), was batting .337 on July 6
Mike Sweeney (2002), is batting .365 on June 27

It's very likely Sweeney will be under .350 by the all-star break, but it's not out of the question he can be at .380

And if somehow he does make a run for .400, the Royals are blessed to be totally out of a pennant race where Sweeney will be pitched too more often than he would if he were with say the Red Sox or any of the 3 AL West contenders. True, when Sweeney faces pitchers of would-be playoff teams, he will be pitched around, but that's happening right now, and he's still smacking the ball all over the place.

Sweeney, .400, you never know... :)

Today he homered and drove in 5 runs to rally a royals come back! SWEENEY IS ON FIRE! Go royals also to mention royals on a 4 game win streak!

I still think it's early to decide that, but he is kicking ass. I wish there was a better lineup with him, he'd have way more rbis.

He just hit another home run...the streak is now at 5. I think it's pretty safe to say that this is the hottest that any Royal has been since Brett wore the blue and white. As long as we keep him, he could very well end up being the second greatest Royal in history, only behind Brett.

Sweeney hit by pitch, injures hand

SEATTLE - Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney was struck in the right hand by a pitch and had to leave Wednesday night's game against the Seattle Mariners.

Sweeney was hit by right-hander Joel Pineiro's high pitch as he led off the Royals' fourth inning. The ball whizzed under Sweeney's chin and appeared to strike both his hand and his bat.

Frank Kyte, one of the Royals' trainers, led Sweeney off the field.

Sweeney suffered a laceration on his right ring finger and was to have an X-ray on the finger.

On Tuesday night, Sweeney's home run broke a 5-5 tie and led to a 7-5 Mariners loss. It was his sixth homer in the last eight games.

But the count was full, three balls and two strikes, when Sweeney was hit, so it's unlikely that Pineiro was trying to brush him back. Pineiro held his head in apparent dismay when Sweeney was hit.

Sweeney has been involved in a battle for the American League batting lead with the Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki during this series. When Wednesday night's game began, Suzuki was in the lead, .366 to .363.

When Sweeney popped out in his first at-bat, his average dipped to .362. Meanwhile, Suzuki had a double in his first three trips to the plate.

Brandon Berger ran for Sweeney after he was hit by the pitch.
