No "coming around" to it at all. I shoot Av way more often than any other mode. I only do sports in Tv (and since I hardly ever shoot sports anymore, I hardly ever shoot Tv). :)

I'm glad you brought this up.

The majority of the time my eyes do not see this, or my brain doesn't compute it very well, so I have a difficult time with it.

I worked with a local girl who shoots quite a bit and her eye is the polar opposite of mine. She doesn't even see the things that drive me nuts and I only quickly browse over what she values the most. It led to quite a bit of arguing and a large amount of learning about how other people my be looking at the images.

It wouldn't be so striking if the grass in the foreground weren't so brown and crinkly. If the background were similarly washed out, I'd be worrying this poor tiger was stuck in the dust bowl somewhere.

Depending on lens, look into a polarizing filter. You'll be freaking amazed at the cool results. If not polarizing filter, go with a yellow filter.... NEVER bad choices to add at purchase time of any lens (in addition to the UV that you'll buy if for not other reason than protection).

It is on Oahu's North Shore. There is a little dirt parking area just west of Waimea Bay.

I was driving by a couple of nights ago and the sunset from that spot was spectacular, but I didn't have my camera with me. So I went back last night and got it.

This is the spot:

Anyone have an image printing suggestion? I haven't been real thrilled with my local options.

I can't say I enjoy black & white, or graveyards, but I found this old rock interesting. I couldn't tell for sure, but it appeared the top of the cross has been shot at several times over the years.

Would have framed it that way if I were more square to the windows height wise instead of on the ground tilted up.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...c288610b545bad

I saw a teenager literally faint from the pain of getting one of these jumping chollas pulled out of her hand. Her eyes rolled back in her head and everything - totally freaked her friends out. They thought the cactus was poisonous and were freaking out about getting her to a hospital. We had to reassure them it was just pain and panic.

She got it stuck on the back of one hand then made the classic mistake of trying to grab it with her other hand. She probably had 20 spines stuck in her. They have micro barbs all down the shaft, so when you pull them out they just tear flesh the whole way.

Of course the stupid kids were drinking beer and wine, wandering off the trail and obviously payed no attention to the numerous warning signs. At least they learned a lesson in respecting nature w/o actually dying like those kids in Yosemite who went over the waterful.

Photo Geek Thread: Photos You Take - Post Them Up!

We will be going to Estes Park soon. I have a fairly nice Canon and I want to accomplish a few photos. Last year we went and I was getting the blurred waterfall motion pretty good but I didn't have a tripod so the photos could have been better. I also was getting some sun "orbs" and rings. Is that just from the angle in relation to the sun or is something wrong with my shutter speed or something else?

Also, how can I take a photo of the Milky Way? What functions do I manipulate? I don't have my camera or manual in front if me but I think the manual was having me mess with aperture and iso speed. I tried last year but just wasn't able to get the camera to really even take a picture. It kept giving me the error of not enough light I think.

I don't remember what settings I was trying or if that even matters given I was changing so much other stuff.

suzzer99 06-07-2015 10:40 PM

You definitely need a tripod for good blurred water motion. Set your shutter speed on something like 1/15 to 1/8. Also some ND filters if it's sunny (because the shutter is open so long you need to block out most of the light).

Similar concept goes for the Milky Way - longer exposure. Most of those shots you see with a dark foreground are blended - one exposure for the milky way, one for the ground. Then you blend them together with HDR software or manually in Photoshop. You need a tripod to make sure both shots are from the exact same spot and angle.

Thanks. I can definitely see after a quick search that an nd filter is needed. That seems like it would solve the problems of brightness I was having.

I recall now that I think I had set the iso speed as high as I could and gave a long exposure for the attempted sky pictures. I have no idea what all the combinations I tried or what aperture I was trying. I think I would need to use a high aperture setting then for the sky pictures to let in the most light? Or would it be a low aperture number to coincide with the slower shutter speed?

suzzer99 06-07-2015 11:22 PM

Yeah highest ISO your camera can handle, longest shutter speed (anything over 30 seconds though you start to get star trails), low aperture: http://improvephotography.com/5955/h...the-milky-way/

You can get really fancy and get a tracking tripod rig that tracks the earth's movement: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...cking%20tripod

The Grand Canyon image is a 5x5 matrix or 25 shots stitched together. They arent layed but overlapped on the edges. I have a bunch I'm putting up on my facebook page (Dave Lane Astrophotography) there are some pretty nice shots in there.

If you want to see a cool 1/3rd sized actual image (warning even as a jpeg its 29 mb) try clicking this link, then give me a star count

Got back from an Alaskan cruise earlier this week and wanted to share some of my favorite shots.

First is Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay. Then a couple of different views of Denali. And finally, a view from the White Pass Railway near Skagway.

Which cruise did you go on? I just got back from a Holland America cruise up there at the end of May.

Moab lightning. You can see Balanced Rock in lower right sticking up. Thats Venus and Jupiter shrouded in a bit of clouds. Venus is super bright, Jupiter very bright above it and to the left.

As always, simply beautiful...

So I have been looking at filters. On a whim I bought a polarized filter from Best Buy but it was the cheap insignia brand. After reading on it people say it worked okay but I haven't tried it yet. I am kind of having buyer's remorse and am angry I can't find the receipt.

It seems I should have sprung for a bit more expensive version and gone with the Hoya brand. I will definitely be doing that on the ND filter but those are only about $20. The more expensive circular polarizers are over $40.

On the circular polarizer should I be getting gray or black?
