I'm just glad to see others who appreciate all the old country music too. My Ipod song variety looks pretty wild as it goes from old country to classical to modern, although I've never been a fan of some styles of music.

I've haven't even tapped the edge of the song list I want to add here.

with old overalls and cotton balls all strapped across your back
man it's hard to make believe ain't nothin wrong

But momma kept the bible read
and daddy kept our family fed
and somewhere in between I must have grown
cause I just kept on dreamin that a song that I was singin
takes me down the road to where I wanna go
now I know
its a long hard road

There's a lot of great songs then there's George Straits "I Can Still Make Cheyenne."

Forgive the dumb pic vid. GS doesn't always make videos. He's a recording artist not a video star.

The song is all that matters anyway.

My top 3 songs of all time...

1. Oak Ridge Boys- I'll Be True To You
2. Glenn Campbell- Gentle On My Mind
3. Johnny Cash- Sunday Morning Comin Down

There's reference to this earlier in the thread and I've posted 2 and 3 in the random music video thread before. There is no better imo.

Raiderhater 06-26-2012 11:50 PM

Have to disagree with the OP. While "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is one of the greats, it isn't the greatest. IMNSHO that would belong to Willie Nelson's "My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys". Following in second place would be his song "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys".

All great songs. Campbell's lyrics and phrasing are just incredible to me in this one.

While I love both of those songs I wasn't simply picking my own favorite. CMT and Country Weekly did a survey last year and "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was the overwhelming favorite for best country song of all time. I happen to agree so I included it in the OP as best country song ever. Of course it's open to debate.

Man I'd post videos of the entire Ropin' in the Wind album by Garth Brooks but I couldn't find a video of Rodeo that was actually Garth singing.

That came out when I was 3 and I wore the tape out until I no longer owned a tape player and 21 years later I still listen to the CD frequently.

George and Garth are the two I grew up on and it doesn't get much better IMO.

Dr. Johnny Fever 06-27-2012 12:46 AM

Speaking of perfect songs....

He was born in the summer of his 27th year
comin home to a place he'd never been before
he left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
you might say he found a key for every door

When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
one the road and hangin by a song
but the strings already broken and he doesn't really care
it keeps changin fast and it don't last for long

in the colorado rocky mountian high
i've seen it raining fire in the sky
the shadows from the starlight are softer than a lullaby
rocky mountian high..... colorado
rocky mountain high..... colorado

he climbed to feel the mountains, he saw silver clouds below
he saw everything as far as you can see
and they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun
and he lost a friend but kept the memory

now he walks in quiet solitude, the forest and the streams
seeking grace in every step he takes
his sight has turned inside himself to try and understand
the serenity of a clear blue moutain lake

and the colorado rocky mountain high
i've seen it raining fire in the sky
talk to God and listen to the casual reply
rocky mountain high...... colorado
rocky mountain high...... colorado

Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
of the simple things he cannot comprehend
while they try to tear the mountains down and bring in a couple more...
more people... more scars upon the land

and the colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it raining fire in the sky
know he'd be a poor man if he never saw an eagle fly...
rocky mountain high
the colorado rocky mountain high
i've seen it raining fire in the sky
friends around the campfire and everybodys high.................

rocky mountain high..... colorado......
repeat...

I'm a huge fan of Keith Urban's music. Now its not traditonal country, but if you look back he falls along the lines with the Marty Robbins and Glen Campbells of the past with their respected place in time. One hell of a guitarist, the only perfomer I have seen put on a better live show is Garth Brooks. Which he did studio work for and was once a member of Brooks & Dunn's band.

Wait, wait, wait. The guy singing in that first video sucks. Time for the real deal. And since I like to see kickass live peformances, this:

My favorite country song is the one where the guy sings about his girlfriend leaving, his dog dying and his pickup breaking down.

Ah hell I didn't even listen to the video. I saw it was Copperhead Road and assumed it was Steve Earle. That guy in the video does suck.

OK, here's the thing with Brad Paisley. He's damn good, but I think he's made too many cutesy novelty-type songs. Or maybe his label just released too many, and I haven't heard any album cuts.

Anyway. I have a step dad, and I am a step dad, and this song just hit me in the gut the first time I heard it.

1. Oak Ridge Boys- I'll Be True To You
2. Glenn Campbell- Gentle On My Mind
3. Johnny Cash- Sunday Morning Comin Down

There's reference to this earlier in the thread and I've posted 2 and 3 in the random music video thread before. There is no better imo.

Truly a heartbreaking song.
