That shit runs in my family, although (knock on wood) the cruel gods of aging haven't yet added it to my dance card. My maternal grandmother had it bad, as did both of my uncles.

Ironically, one of my uncles contracted neuropathy in the same toe that had had the gout. So even though it looked awful and should have been horrendously painful, he couldn't feel a thing and it didn't bother him at all. The only instance I've ever heard of where two nasty maladies combined to cancel each other out.

CasselGotPeedOn 07-19-2021 04:11 PM

I mean this in the nicest way possible, hopefully it's terminal.

Doesn’t matter your age with gout my man. I’ve had it since I was 28 years old. If your kidneys can’t process purines, you’ll get the gout. It’s definitely miserable, but the medication really lets you do live like normal.

Well, that's a lucky break, I guess. Maybe not so much when the toe gets gangrene, but lucky in the interim.

I was not aware of that. Thought it was an old person thing. My relatives were all older when they came down with it.

Rain Man 07-19-2021 04:18 PM

I'll point out that a toe injury against the Chiefs ended Jack Lambert's career, so take it seriously. You can't anchor against offensive linemen if you have a bad toe.

cabletech94 07-19-2021 06:20 PM

I started getting gout at age 19. It’s been tolerable and it’s been deathly crippling. Get on meds, your doc will probably tell you rest, elevation, and most importantly, get as many bee jays as possible. (On a side note, steroid shots are a miracle cure).

mlyonsd 07-19-2021 06:38 PM

If it's an arthritic problem you could try Aleve (generic Naproxen). I have a big toe with a minor bunion problem that will eventually require surgery. My Podiatrist told me to double up on Naproxen. Works for me after a day or two.

BWillie 07-19-2021 06:43 PM

I’m not diagnosed (I don’t go to the doctor for anything)… but I’ve had textbook gout flare ups in my right big toe since my early 20’s. They progressively are getting worse and stay for longer. I recently discovered bio freeze on Amazon which helps get me sleep through the night and hobble around during flare ups.

However, when you gots da gout, usually, it's so painful you can't walk on it. I crawled around the house for a couple of days.

Rainbarrel 07-19-2021 07:57 PM

You may have passed out, outside with it sticking out of A hole in your sock. A snake may have thought it was a mouse and tried swallowing it. Or maybe not.

TLO 07-19-2021 08:00 PM

Don't think it's gout.

njchiefs 07-19-2021 08:04 PM

Why don’t you think it’s gout? Is it on the outer joint at the base of the big toe, red, warm, tender. If so, it’s gout. Colchicine, taken as a bolus dose, the first sign of symptoms knocks it out quickly. Allopurinol is preventative but won’t do a thing once you’ve got it.

kjwood75nro 07-19-2021 08:05 PM

I have gout and the frequent need to pop my toe joints.

Try frequent flexing exercises to keep the joints flexible. Also, OTC joint supplements (tart cherry) can help.

Do you have more pain when getting around or sitting/sleeping?

Inner joint. Not red, warm, or tender at all.

All they do is a blood test, you’ll have high uric acid and they’ll prescribe you febuxostat or allopurinol. You’ll never suffer again, if you forget to take it and suddenly have a flare up take mitigare or colcrys.

I would hate to have that pain, just because I wouldn’t go to the doctor. Maybe I’m a bitch and my pain tolerance is low, but gout ****ing sucks.

I had gout in the ankle....and one time in the knee. I drank cherry juice and found it helps.

Same here (toe/ankle). Usually it's in the big toe, but after a large shrimp boil, my whole ankle completely locks up.

If I manage to get my steel-toed boot on, it immobilizes my foot enough that I can go to work.

But, otherwise, it's a sick day of hobbling around the house or staying in bed.

Can't drink beer anymore, but whiskey (somehow, thank God) doesn't aggravate it.

eDave 07-21-2021 02:27 PM

I woke up yesterday with severe big toe pain. No trauma to it, no nothing. Just woke up to pain. No swelling, slight redness to the entire foot with the veins popping. Just pain and the inability to walk without more severe pain.

Sucks.

It was by far the worst attack I’ve had. It’s definitely not a prank, my veins were wild as well. The pic doesn’t do justice at all. Been eating ibuprofen and colchicine as a side dish ever since.

I’ve been off my medication for 2 years, I recently lost a ton of weight and haven’t had any issues. On the 18th I bbq’d a tri-tip and literally ate 3/4 of the damn thing. I didn’t think anything of it, but I learned the hard way.

Just get some blood work done and see if your uric acid is high. I’m pretty sure take a lot of protein and consume a lot of protein, so it’s very possible you’re getting mild attacks.

Yup. Weight gain/loss can be a major contributor of an attack. Of course meat as well (especially that much). Man, take it easy. Rest and Elavation. You don’t need to have blood work done to see your Uric levels.

How do you see your levels without blood work? It’s been elevated everyday, I’m on the couch all day, only get up to pee. I’m drinking water non stop.
