I'm glad to have DJ's report on Bray. I'm still excited to watch him play in preseason, and I still think Buttchin sucks dick. But the same criticisms and caveats we were all talking about with Bray during draft talk and also after he immediately signed with us appear to still be a huge gaping issue. The positive reports from camp about all the pretty throws he made shouldn't be tossed out the window, but they shouldn't be the only thing we examine when trying to evaluate what Bray can really potentially do.

And for the folks that have never been to camp - it's impossible to really know what these guys that are reporting back are seeing. For instance, on Monday morning Nick Jacobs was tweeting about some plays that the TEs were making on the LBs and nice catches. Well A) Jacobs was tweeting from the VIP tent which is 50 yards away from the near side of the field (where the DL was matching up with the OL at the time) and 150 yards away from the TE practices he was watching and B) the QBs were at the side field running DB/WR drills. Those great plays were being made in individual drills with no lines in place and with camp bodies/coaches throwing the passes. I don't recall seeing Stanzi over there, now that I think about it, so maybe Stanzi was throwing the balls to the TEs (which makes some sense). In either event, it wasn't the scenario you no doubt had envisioned in your head when you saw that tweet.

There's stuff happening all over the field almost the entire practice. The tweets are interesting, but they're not dispositive. And yeah, they have a little bias to them.

I'm not saying to disregard all the positive reports on Bray - It's better than nothing but doom and gloom. At the same time, don't consider them dispositive either. They're not watching these like game film. These reporters are usually high on the hill looking down and trying to focus on one thing in a swirl of activity.

Another bit of off-topic camp insight - Sean Smith is huge. You know by looking at the program that he's a tall guy, but you don't realize just how massive this guy is as a CB until you see him running drills with the other DBs. He looks like a man among boys.

Smith made a very nice fade pass off a double move on Monday where the WR had a step (I think it was Hemmingway, who looked good all day) and Smith leapt up reached forward and smacked it away as it came up over his shoulder. It was a great play on the ball and it's a play that someone like Flowers couldn't have made. Honestly, with the ball placement being what it was, even had Flowers been in position he may not have been able to make the play.

Smith may actually be a FS playing CB at this point, but his size is a huge asset, especially in the press (which they played all day Monday; looked like exclusively cover 1).

They were from what I saw.

But they didn't always do a great job of getting their hands on a body. I remember on one play in particular, Avery put a quick hand-check on Smith (iirc) when Smith came in for the bump and just blew past him.

And yes, Avery is fast. Alex Smith threw a ball out there for him (maybe Daniel) that I thought he had no chance on and he hit an extra gear and went out and got it for a long TD catch towards the end of practice.

I honestly don't recall seeing a WR on this team that had that ability to turn it on and separate using raw speed like that. It was incredibly impressive.

Curious, DJ, what was Baldwin looking like?

mcaj22 07-31-2013 04:37 PM

thing about Smith is he jumps at a lot of balls and whiffs more than he makes, he gambles a shit ton because he has the size to try and do it

Damn man, it's seeming less and less likely that he's going to shake his bust status.
