LMAO I'm an engineer/scientist by trade so if its mechanical, given the choice, I prefer to build it rather than buy it. I do a crap ton of homework to try to pick the best value. SInce I picked up the lower I've done about 6 months of homework on the AR-15 platform to decide what I wanted.

yea I looked at he 50 beowulf, the 450 bush, the 458 socom. For the wulf it's got really proprietary brass and it's low power. The WSSM case is an officially produced case with good brass availability. All you have to do is buy 7mm WSSM brass and chop it at the neck. Alot cheaper. Bullets are the same at .50 S&W.

Looks like the 50 WSSM variant(whatever they ultimately call it either .50HP or 50 OSSM or something), should outperform all three of those big bore options.

I gathered roughly the same from watching the show. Velocity is probably pretty slow and I wouldn't trust it's accuracy when the distance gets stretched.

No it's based off the Winchester Super Short Magnum.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winches...r_Short_Magnum

Rifle cartridge based off the Winchester Short Magnum. Allows for quite a bit of powder and has some ballistics advantages and is high pressure.

Quote:

There are basic advantages inherent to the Short Magnum concept. The idea is that the short, fat powder column gives a more uniform load density and ignition rate and therefore a more consistent burn. This in turn should translate into improved accuracy and potentially moderate recoil due to more efficient use of propellants.

Another advantage is the action size. For example, if we compare the .25 WSSM to the .25-06 Remington, we find that the .25-06 requires a .30-06 length action, commonly called a standard or long action. The .25 WSSM case which is almost a full inch shorter, can make use of an existing short action such as used by the .308 Winchester family of cartridges. Some manufacturers have even created extra short actions to accommodate newer short rounds. The intrinsic accuracy benefits of a short, stiffer action over a long action are well-established principles of rifle design. The resulting rifle is smaller, lighter, more compact, and quicker handling as well.
A 50 WSSM variant would use 50 S&W bullets since no way would 50BMG bullets fit(well unless you only wanted a few grains of powder).

Yea I like the cartridge enough I've been very tempted just to pick up a regular WSSM upper. One thing I've read is that stock 25 WSSM can be a bit too long for the AR-15 magazine.

CrazyPhuD 01-24-2011 03:39 PM

BTW decent resource for people if they want to see an AR-15 built up from scratch. THe video is a bit small but still useful.

And....in the ultimate display of unnecessary excessiveness...IF they ever catch up on back order and make these generally in stock I'm so going to buy one.....Was supposed to be this month but ares is the king of unfulfilled promises.

:D I have some shooting friends out here but for the rest it's harder to explain. I usually resort to...well you can take the boy out of kansas, but you can't take the kansas out of the boy.

Sweet mother of God! I think I just pitched a tent. LMAO

This made me think of Vermin in Johnny Dangerously:

Danny Vermin: I got something to stop him.
Dutch: They made it for him special. It's an eighty-eight Magnum.
Danny Vermin: It shoots through schools.

What about something like this: http://www.fnhusa.com/le/products/fi...06&mid=FNM0152

They also have the 17S which is a .308 model. Is it bad that I'm judging the guns by how they are in Call of Duty?

BTW current pics of the 22LR build...not quite done but soon. Pardon the beat up nature of the mag...I had to basically build a new mag for the 22LR since the stock mags looked like crap. Nice thing about the new mag is the last round bolt hold open feature is nice and crisp now.

I would love to have the civilian SCAR, if it wasn't $2,000+
