Freaky Chiefs: NFL Films

Came across this old NFL Films production about the Chiefs from around 1971. Includes Bobby Bell, Dawson, Stram and lots of Buck Buchanan. Buck was a great guy and well spoken. Lost way too soon. Look in the first couple minutes for a kick return by Noland Smith. Johnny Robinson #42 takes about three guys out all by himself, and Smith gets clotheslined going out of bounds. Stuff like this would get you kicked out of the game now.

Random observations:

Didn't they have a 40-man roster back then? I see two hall of fame defensive backs playing on special teams at first glance, and wasn't Bobby Bell the long snapper?

Robert Holmes was before my time, but I feel like he would be a fan favorite if he was playing today.

Hank Stram had powerful legs.

And yeah, Buck Buchanan was an impressive guy in every way, as is Bobby Bell.

Fred Arbanas was a bad ass. He lost his eye in a bar fight and played with a glass eye. Ed Budde had a steel plate in his head. Johnny Robinson played Super Bowl IV with three broken ribs. EJ Holub had around eight total knee surgeries between both his knees. These guys were super tough.

Eric Berry didn't play because his heel was sore.

Great find GB!

Watch the rockets Lennie the Cool throws. He had one hell of an arm, more than I ever realized.

Morris Stroud. Man, that was my first disappointing Chief. I remember reading the back of that football card as a kid. Six foot ten!! This guy's gonna destroy the league!

But, as Buchanan observed, he "couldn't catch a cold."

gblowfish deleted off the back half of the video where they talked about the groupies on road trips.

Somebody needs to tweet this out to the guys on the team now, so they can get some inspiration.
