LNBS: Where does the 2019 Super Bowl Chiefs rank among modern day era Superbowl Teams

I get the season just ended and perhaps looking back people will say the Chiefs are the next dynasty. Looking back at this 2019 team though....

Team finished 12-4, 1-1 without Mahomes, 11-3 with Mahomes including 5 double digit comebacks during the season, 3 post season double digit comebacks. I'm not sure how many teams have done that in the post season.

Going back the past 20 years: You had the all defense Ravens, All defense Bucs, The Patriots who beat the Rams and Panthers on a game winning field goal, The Steelers who beat the Seahawks in an ugly game with some blown calls, The Giants 2X over Brady, The Seahawks who creamed 1 of the all time offenses, The Ravens again who nearly blew a big lead vs the Niners, Packers who were a well balanced team, Eagles who pulled an upset over a Brady who wasn't washed up yet. I'm sure i'm leaving some out.

Anyway with the exception of that legion of doom team and maybe that Pats team that rallied against the Falcons when Brady became unstoppable i'm pretty comfortable saying this Chiefs team was better than most if not all those other teams that won the past 20 years.

Am I wrong?

Obviously, we're going to be biased and take this Chiefs team. But they are a very good team. As are the 49ers. This was as evenly matched of a game as I can remember in recent history. I really believe that the Chiefs were the only team that was beating San Francisco this year. And the only team that worried me was the 49ers. How often can you say that about 2 Superbowl teams? I will give props to the SB 44 Saints that beat the Colts. That was my favorite Superbowl of this century until 54.

This was done Jan 1 2020, I get this isn't exactly what you are talking about.

But maybe somewhere to start, what you are asking isn't easy.

I do think the best game would be the 2007 Pats vs 2019 Chiefs, obviously not a SB game.

That Seattle team with BEAST MODE/LEGION OF BOOM has to be seriously in the mix.

It was an even game as most super bowls usually are the difference was we had a HOF'r QB they didn't.

Looking back at the past 20 years: Brady is a HOF QB, Wilson? Maybe/Probably?, Eli will make it but I don't think he's one of the top 15 QB's ever.

You put Mahomes on that 2007 Pats team or even that 2011 team that lost again to the Giants you saw pressure got to Brady where as Mahomes would have gotten outside the pocket and made plays.

I would argue this is 1 of the top 5 best teams in the modern era of football.

Where are you drawing the line for modern era? Are you including the Montana 49ers and the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys? Further back than that? Or are you only counting the last 15-20 years where they have given offenses a distinct advantage?

Why Not? 02-14-2020 03:38 AM

Your answer to how many other teams have comeback from down double digits in 3 same post season games is: 0

That’s not even accounting for the fact that the Chiefs won all of those games by double digits, an unfathomable outcome outside of a video game.

The 2019 49ers were wire to (almost he he he)wire the widely regarded best team in the NFL this past season. And the Chiefs beat them by double digits.

By all accounts this team deserves to be considered for the best team in recent history and I’m not sure it stops at recent.

Gotcha. Then yes, definitely top 5.

Super Bowl LIV was the greatest game to be played in the history of football ever.

PERIOD .

RINGLEADER 02-14-2020 08:59 AM

Honestly, if Mahomes ankle isn’t hobbled in the Colts and Texans games and Reid doesn’t go into a shell in the second half to rightfully protect his QB, I think we win those as well. Packers who knows (though we almost won with Moore) and the Titans game was a fluke (though I think we win if the brain trust starts Pennel).

So 15-1 is probably closer to what the team was barring injury to Mahomes (I’m not even counting Hill, Jones, Watkins, and everyone else who missed time).

This was a great team that fought through a lot of adversity.

smithandrew051 02-14-2020 09:11 AM

When you account for injuries, this team was far better than their 12-4 regular season record.

This is absolutely one of the greatest teams to ever play the game.

When the defense came around, they went from great to legendary. I would never bet against the 2019-2020 Chiefs when they’re healthy and playing well.

The team went on a 51-7 run through 2 and a half quarters against a Division Champ in the playoffs. That doesn’t happen.

Swept the AFC West, finished on a 9 win game streak, 3 historic comeback wins in the playoffs. Definitely, one of the best teams in the last 20 years.

If we go back to back or threepeat, they will have to be in the discussion with other dynasties.

ThaVirus 02-14-2020 09:42 AM

We'd probably struggle with the 08 Steelers, 10 Packers, 13 Seahawks and the 14/16 versions of the Patriots.

Difficult to compare with the era change in 2004 but I think the 13 Seahawks would be the best team of the bunch. I'd love to see our team against that 00 Ravens team, though. I think we'd make Dilfer look like shit and I highly doubt they'd get a return TD against us, but our offense against that defense would be epic.
