Race for Rookie of the Year: Miller by a Mile

1. [1] Von Miller, OLB, DEN, +51.3 (701 snaps)

He not only has the most QB knockdowns of any player (11 sacks and 18 hits), he also leads all 4-3 OLB’s with his +19.3 run defense grade. Throw in a positive grade in coverage, and I’m asking myself one question. If he’s this good already, how good will he be with a full offseason under his belt? Note to everyone voting for rookie of the year, if you’re ballot doesn’t read Von Miller (with some exclamation marks) then you have failed football.

In fact, there’s a legitimate case to be made that Miller, the all-around excellent player specializing in terrorizing quarterbacks, is the Defensive Player of the Year. I said it, and after another week where he essentially locked up our endorsement for rookie of the year, people need to start accepting the fact that Miller isn’t any ordinary player.

Nice video and the music was strangely both annoying and interesting... I thought the "Peebowing" comment was funny.

Pro Bowl Cheat Sheet: Week 12

Outside Linebackers: Von Miller (DEN), Kamerion Wimbley (OAK) & Cameron Wake (MIA)

OK, I’ve seen enough. It has to be said. All this talk of Miller as rookie defensive player of the year is sadly missing the point by as much as Blaine Gabbert misses his receivers. Von Miller is the best defensive player in the NFL. Period. Sam Monson is working on an article detailing this as you read this, but if you can’t wait then beg, borrow or steal some tape of the Denver defense and you’ll see exactly where we’re coming from.

Didn't Miller just have surgery on his hand?

Yeah he tore a ligament in his thumb midway through the 4th quarter and he made the game saving run stop in OT pushing Novac out of field goal range. He will be fine, and has a good shot of playing against Minnesota.

Best in a Decade

The way in which the Broncos use Miller means that for all intents and purposes he plays two positions for them, depending on the down and distance. What is truly remarkable is that, despite being a rookie, he is arguably the best player in the league right now at either spot. This might be the most dominant season from a rookie since Randy Moss defined the word ‘uncoverable’ in his first year with a chip on his shoulder in 1998. Often we get caught up in hype over substance, but Miller might be one case of the substance far outstripping the hype, and we may be witnessing the best rookie performance in more than a decade. Forget Rookie of the Year, through 12 weeks Von Miller is the Defensive Player of the Year.

Needless to say, Miller is sitting at the top of our 4-3 outside linebacker grades at the moment, and by some staggering margin. His +51.3 grade is some distance from his nearest challenger (Wimbley at +34.1) and more than double the next placed player (Daryl Smith of the Jaguars). The interesting thing, though, comes when you take away his pass-rushing and just look at the rest of his game. Focusing only on his play as a run defender and in coverage, he is still having an All-Pro caliber season. Baltimore’s Jarrett Johnson has been our top-graded 4-3 OLB against the run for the past two seasons, and has never been outside of the Top 3 in that regard since we’ve been grading. Miller is currently as far ahead of Johnson as Johnson is from the rest of the field in run defense. He has stepped in as a rookie and is performing better than the standard set at the position for the past three seasons.

Miller is also the only linebacker in the league with more than 25 tackles that has yet to miss one. He trails only four other 4-3 outside linebackers in defensive stops (tackles which constitute an offensive failure), with 36, despite having far fewer tackling opportunities than most other linebackers that play in a more conventional alignment away from the line of scrimmage.

Doom has missed three games and Von has missed 1. You had Studebaker, Houston, and Hali right? Or am I missing someone?

Quesadilla Joe 12-04-2011 05:18 PM

VONDOOM: 17

HalHoustonBaker: 11

My bad. Von is coming back next week vs the Bears and if Houston can get 3 sacks against them I'm expecting like 7 from Von. LMAO
