I don't think you'll get mesothelioma, but if it was fiblerglass you may be a hurting unit for awhile. What material was it?

Glad you were attentive and was able to think on your feet.

Nope, there has NEVER been jacket on it before. It just got to hot and what bat shit crazy. What happened, is it kept the heat from escaping and super heated the inside. It got so hot, I'm surprised I didn't have a melt down of the pipe itself.

So are there other types of insulation that WILL work? Or do you just have to leave it exposed?

I'm going to go with the "it is, what it is" technique. I'm jus tgoing to make a big sign this year and hang it by the pipe. Something like, "If you are to stupid to figure out a stove pipe is hot, get the hell out of my shop....NOW!"

Yeah, there is triple-walled stove pipe that has some type of insulation in it, but I have no idea exactly what it is. You can have a raging inferno going on in your stove and touch the side of it and not feel any heat.

Donger 11-24-2010 08:26 PM

So, you tried to insulate a chimney?

Yeah, you are kind of like the Montana equivalent of a McDonald's coffee cup.

Disagree. McDonald's didn't way "feel free to dump this in your lap - you'll be fine."

To expand on that, DON'T use insulation on a stove pipe. As I stated before, it creates "super heat" within the pipe itself. I made a lot of calls after that happened.

I was just out in the shop to grab a beer and there is still a vile smell in there, just nasty. It could take a long time for that to go away.

I forgot the anti part.

We simply must hook up next time I'm in Montana. Not in a ghey way, mind you.
