‘Chiefs are a regression candidate in 2018,’ says Washington Post writer

Quote:

After the Chiefs and three other teams were knocked out of the playoff field last weekend, a Washington Post writer ranked the chances for improvement next season for each franchise.

Mike Renner wrote that the Chiefs have the worst chance of those four teams (the others are the Panthers, Rams and Bills) to be better next season.

Renner began by saying the Chiefs defense lacked depth and many of the starters received “subpar grades.”

“Even former all-pro safety Eric Berry is no lock to return to his previous form,” Renner wrote. “He’ll turn 30 next year and is rehabbing a torn Achilles. Tamba Hali (34 years old) and Derrick Johnson (35) are squarely in the twilight of their careers.

“The question now becomes, how do they restock? They’ve struck out mightily outside of their top picks in the draft, and their cap situation is one of the worst in the league. As it stands, they’re currently over the projected cap in 2018. Even after some cap-shedding maneuvers, it’s impossible to think free agency is a realistic option for them. It also means that even after a career-high 87.2 grade from Alex Smith, he and his $20.6 million cap hit next season could be out the door. With the uncertainty at QB and a declining defense, the Chiefs are a regression candidate in 2018.”

If you were wondering, there is no mention of Patrick Mahomes.

While down on the Chiefs, Renner is bullish on the Rams’ chances. You can read more here.

Sassy Squatch 01-12-2018 02:45 PM

Very possible if we don't do something about the defense. Front 7 is ****ing trash outside of 3 players. Secondary is even worse.

ARROW2 01-12-2018 02:46 PM

This was said about the chiefs for this past year as well. No need to read any article after this line:

"If you were wondering, there is no mention of Patrick Mahomes."

Saints gave up 26 points, they won and are still playing because their QB is not a talentless, scared pussy.

Even their sports are fake news. With very easy cuts on a few old players and an obvious trade with Alex Smith, they will certainly have the cap space to do whatever they want. I wouldn't be surprised if they have 40+ mil to play with.

BryanBusby 01-12-2018 02:53 PM

They are a candidate between retaining werthers (****ing why) , a total Defensive overhaul and ironing out the wrinkles in a new Offense.

One slip up to set up a decade of rape is fine though.

King_Chief_Fan 01-12-2018 03:00 PM

8-8....surprised it is that high
Rookie qb with no OC or qb coach (Smith was a great mentor)
Fan base and ownership that is ok with the way it has been
Playing tough shedule
HC that is delusional
Over the cap and has to cut a lot of experience and replace with cheaper and less skilled replacements

I will say this. If Bellichick got sick and couldn't be on the sidelines, would the odds change for them going to the SB? NO

If Brady tears a knee, would the odds change? HELL YEAH!!!!!

So bitching abut good coaches like Reid means nothing, it is about the QB, period.......UNLESS, you have a legendary defense and there are NONE in the league.

I don't think so.

Clark Hunt is a smart guy and understands that losing a lot of games could come with the territory of starting a young QB.

Andy has won enough and has enough clout to earn a mulligan.

I think Mahomes will win us some games, but he'll probably turn the ball over some too. Without our give/take ratio being so far in the positive this is an 8-8 team at best. I think that might be a good guess for our 2018 record.

pugsnotdrugs19 01-12-2018 03:14 PM

I never take these guys seriously. If you aren't invested into the league enough to know your shit backwards and forwards, I'm not going to care what predictions you make.

This guy clearly doesn't understand this team's situation, or he would realize that $30+M in cap space is plenty.

Can't blame the schedule. The entire AFC West will be playing the same schedule except for a couple of games. I'm not sure how they rotate the home/away part of the schedule, maybe someone can explain it to me, however it seems that lately the Chiefs have been getting a tougher road schedule than the Broncos/Raiders and the Chargers are matching the Chiefs. Does road/away have to do with winning? If so, why do the Chiefs get to play the Patriots/Steelers on the road next year?

pugsnotdrugs19 01-12-2018 03:23 PM

I'm just not sure how we can assume a schedule's toughness in January. For all we know, New England is about to have a major shakeup. Pittsburgh could too if they fall on their face and Ben retires. A lot of moving parts to be assembled, for the Chiefs included.

Ming the Merciless 01-12-2018 03:24 PM

Ming the Merciless 01-12-2018 03:26 PM

Steelers seem to be on some pretty dangerous ground offensively. Ben has openly flirted with retirement, if they tag Bell again he's threatened to sit out or retire (LMAO), Brown is a crybaby when things don't go his way, and Bryant was just requesting a trade not too long ago.

Their big 3 certainly has some serious attention whoring issues.

JoeyChuckles 01-12-2018 03:39 PM

Of course we are a candidate for regression. I'm not sure how anyone thinks we could do the same or better next year compared to this year.

I would expect 7-9 next year with a totally new QB and all the new coaches. Anything above that is just a bonus. If they don't start consistently making the playoffs in year 2, and improving every year after, that's when I'll have a problem.

Sassy Squatch 01-12-2018 03:42 PM

Could go the other way and Mahomes just rips the ass out of the league like Watson was before his injury.

Ragged Robin 01-12-2018 03:43 PM

the SB window with the core group of players that have been on the roster for the last half decade is closed and there will be major roster turnover, no shit the team is likely to regress

Unfortunately we don't have DeAndre Hopkins, a lot of those TD's were literally him throwing 50/50 balls, it wasn't like they were perfect throws or anything.

We have Kelce. He can go up and get balls pretty well.

O.city 01-12-2018 03:47 PM

They've got an offense full of legitimate skill players, a good offensive line, a defense that should be healthy and a full offseason of draft picks and free agency.

Plus they have a great coach.

I'm not overly worried. Hell, I'm probably gonna pick up season tickets for the first time.

Agreed. NT, OLB, and CB at the very least. Add DE and S if Bailey and Parker are kicked to the curb like I think they should be.

O.city 01-12-2018 03:54 PM

You're also never going to fill every hole unless you start hitting on alot more late round picks and such.

Look at Minny. They're WR's are late ass round picks and are legit.

The Chiefs also need the stars on D to play like it and or be put in said positions to make plays.

In all reality this team has hit on a pretty good percentage of later picks, the issue is Ford hasn't delivered that's probably the worst draft pick they've had. Also this team has drafted a lot of DB's and Peters is really the only one that worked out well.

It's time for a new voice calling the defense and it sounds shitty and i know people won't like it but getting an OLB that's better than Ford this year is probably not doable.

Really, if he could stay healthy, he's not bad. He's not what you'd like him to develop into but he's a hell of alot better than what they've trotted out.

They can find some guys that can develop faster and be better than ZOmbo I'd think.

They've got the 5th year tag on him though, if they pull it he's probably gone. I'd keep him on it if they can financially, get a year of him playing for a big contract and let him walk.

They need to upgrade the spot either way IMO.

Zombo could be easily replaced, I just think the idea they're gonna find a starting OLB in the middle of the draft or in FA that is better or not super ****ing expensive is a bit much.

They're most likely gonna have to go with Ford for another year.

Yeah, I'd imagine they will.

They need to look at guys like Aaron Lynch and such to see what they can do for cheap.

Just like the Parker thing, I do think he could be relatively easily replaced but are they willing to chance that when they've been horrid at drafting DB's?

Also then you run the risk of 2 rookies starting in your secondary.

I'm not against cutting Parker if you can upgrade but he's also a bit undervalued here when he's asked to do what he's good at.

He's a deep safety and isn't going to be a good box type hybrid or tackler.

If EB is back to his normal level, the current safeties are pretty good.

Jerok 01-12-2018 04:12 PM

I think we win 6 games next year, but we could win 11. Great year to rebuild and get Mahomes a full season in. The schedule is just ridiculously tough and our defense has a lot of problems.

Well you want what....5 OLBs?

Houston
Ford
KPass
Nicholas

That's 4. I'd bring in 2 more and keep the best 5.

jaa1025 01-12-2018 04:36 PM

The offense won't regress. It will probably improve. Barring injuries, Hunt should be better. Hill will likely be better in his second year at #1 WR. Kelce is in his prime. Conley will be back. I'm confident that Mahomes will be very good...He made Kevin Kolb and AJ Feeley look like good starting QBs for god sake. He made McNabb a fringe HoF player. He made Vick look like an actual QB until injuries derailed his comeback during his time there. He made Alex Smith into a 3? time probowler in 5 years.

Defense, they will likely improve. Why? Because they can't get much worse to be honest. They have the 28th ranked defense. They will improve in the pass defense alone with Berry back. Their pass rush was non existent with only one way to go and that is up. Ragland was a steal and another year in the system he could end up being a beast for them. They will also have Kass with a full year of development that showed some promise in the last game of the season. They will get players in FA and in the draft.

So no, I don't expect them to regress at all. They will be a better team. Whether or not their record reflects that is up in the air. They schedule now looks more difficult than last year...well their opponents. A lot can change between now and then.

Tombstone RJ 01-12-2018 04:39 PM

Backup QB is a little scary next year. I really wouldn't be surprised if Bray is back to compete just because he knows the system and they don't have anyone else. I think drafting a QB mid-late would be a good option but they only have 4 draft picks so we will see. A veteran QB would be great depending on who it is.

I mean, Berry and Houston still haven't hit 30 yet, Chris Jones should be back to his old self with help by him on the D Line, and after Peters sat for a game there hasn't been any real problems since. I wouldn't say we are in complete overhaul mode just yet, just a retooling.

Houston hasn't looked great since his big contract. 2018 is probably his last year in a Chiefs uniform unless he gets back to greatness or restructures. The Chiefs can save 14 million by cutting him him in 2019. And to be honest, he's only had 1 great year. 2013 he was off to a very good year until he got injured.

I read an article that point blank said Reid's offense was designed around Alex.

One of the main reasons we were never going to see Mahomes (no matter how bad the slide was in the middle) this season was this fact.

Its fairly well known...and andy will completely redesign the offense around Mahomes, no doubt.

I can try and find the article if you like...

That can only be a good thing

What type of team gets shutout in the 2nd half again and again?

I think 2018 will be better in some areas and worse in others, but in the end I think it'll be a 9-7 or 10-6 campaign

Our playoff loss was such a ****ing debacle, and I just couldn't care less if it means Mahomes takes over.

Reid has always designed his offense around his QB's strengths and weaknesses. Good coordinators do this. His current offense is designed around Smith. Next year it will be designed around Mahomes. You will likely see a lot less QB run plays. Other than that, his offense is very layered with multiple options from deep, intermediate and short passes on most plays. That won't change.

Even if it will be Mahomes' first year starting, I don't see how the offense could be anything worse than average. With Hunt and Hill entering their prime and an Oline which really should stay at the same level at worse, this might be the best surrounding cast in KC in a long time. Mahomes won't even need to be superman, he will just have to put the ball in the hands of his playmakers Hunt, Kelce and Hill.

The defense is really an unknown at this point. I feel like Veach will do what's needed to make it better but it could stay the same. One thing is for sure, Veach needs to go hard at it and with a vision for the next few years because I want this team to win a SB with Kelce, Hunt and Hill in their prime, so in the next 3 or 4 years.

Since the realignment a few years ago, it is part of the good fortune of winning the division.

Quote:

Every team plays its remaining two games against teams from the two remaining divisions in its own conference — one game at home and the other on the road. The matchups are determined by where the teams finished in their divisions in the previous season. For example, a team that finished the previous year in third place in its division will play the third-place teams from the two other divisions in its conference.
