Cisgendered?

What on earth does "cisgendered" mean?

How do you pronounce it?

Rausch 03-14-2008 12:31 AM

"The word has its origin in the Latin-derived prefix cis, meaning "on the same side" as in the cis-trans distinction in chemistry. In this case, "cis" (on the same side) refers to the unity of a gender identity with a biological gender assignment.
[edit]Internet use
The word cisgender has been used on the internet since at least 1994, when it appeared in the alt.transgendered usenet group in a post by Dana Leland Defosse.[2] Defosse does not define the term and seems to assume that readers are already familiar with it. Coinage has been attributed to Carl Buijs, a transsexual man from the Netherlands, in a number of internet publications.[3][4] which suggest that he proposed the term in 1995. It may have been independently coined -- in April of 1996, Buijs said in a usenet posting "As for the origin; I just made it up".[5]"

"Futher,
Academic use
The term has more recently been used in scholarly publications, such as a 2006 article in the Journal of Lesbian Studies[6] and Julia Serano's 2007 publication Whipping Girl.[7] Serano also uses the related terms cissexual, which she defines as "people who are not transsexual and who have only ever experienced their subconscious and physical sexes as being aligned."

I do believe I need another beverage...

It's the opposite of brogendered.

Ultra Peanut 03-14-2008 09:39 AM

Not to be confused with brosexuals.

So... it's the opposite of transgendered?

patteeu 03-14-2008 02:46 PM

OMG. Does this mean that *I'm* cisgendered! I hope my parents never find out.

Direckshun 03-14-2008 02:55 PM

It's just an odd word, to me.

I was talking to a woman I know and she referred to herself as cisgendered.

I'm like WTF -- all I know is that when -gendered is used as a suffix, it can be weird.

LMAO I'd say that there's still a chance for weirdness. Anyone who uses that word in casual conversation may be straight sexually, but the question remains as to why they'd use such an obscure word. Pretentiousness? Someone who grew up in a family with a huge vocabulary? Someone who is deeply educated in sexual orientation academic literature? It could be anything from the disturbing to the benign.

I always thought it was weird that William F. Buckley Jr. used so many words that most of his readers would have to look up in a dictionary to understand. I never really understood it, but there's probably an obscure word for it.

Turgidity?

Prolixity?

Sanka 03-14-2008 03:35 PM

I think it means this...
