Sturgill Simpson: SOUND & FURY

New album came out yesterday. Just listened to it. It kicks ass.

Thanks!!!

Third Eye 09-28-2019 05:40 PM

Haven’t listened to it yet, but I will. Single didn’t do much for me and I’m a little concerned with Laur out, but I’ll still check it out.

Pablo 09-28-2019 06:24 PM

This seems very nice. Thank u for the heads up!

Buehler445 09-28-2019 10:46 PM

Say what you want about him, but nobody can say his sound is stagnant.

Dudes about as static as Niagra Falls.

He's getting further away from my sound, but this is still a good listen, and my God he'll pump out some incredible lyrics.

listopencil 09-30-2019 05:40 PM

WTF, this is a bloody anime on Netflix? Has anyone seen this?

rabblerouser 09-30-2019 07:32 PM

Downloaded the mp3s just a bit ago, will pick up the LP this Friday.

Tried listening to this. My reaction? It's garbage. The lyrics are awkward and vapid. The music is repetitive with no melody and heavy enough to drown out his voice, unfortunately. The whole thing (what I could stomach anyway) comes off as Simpson singing along to a video game and making up lyrics as he went along. I suppose drunken youth would continue dancing in a night club if this were played. That's the most positive critique I could muster.

I wish I was. I really like his voice and his phrasing. Hopefully soon someone can help him make good music again.

I mean, I haven’t listened to this yet, but it’s hard for me to imagine how Sturgill’s lyrics could be described as vapid.

In lieu of a - link? - I’ll youtube some of this, he is about as unique as it gets and crosses a lotta boundaries

Go listen to it.

I don't know if this album is good or not...

Shogun 10-03-2019 09:56 AM

As a HUGE Sturgill Simpson fan. I hated this album.

It's really not focused.

And he fired Jaur Loaments because Jaur 'didn't keep it country enough'...and now this album?

He needed Jaur to pull this off. And a half dozen better songs...I don't know maybe it'll grow on me.

Laur Joamets, but yes, I agree.

I've always called him "Jaur", I guess I forgot I was being funny and actually thought it was his name in my mind's eye ROFL

Iowanian 10-04-2019 08:29 AM

I've liked him since Sunday Valley days but It disappoints me to say I'm not a fan of this one.

He's getting further away from me. I'll load up on more Childers and I'm becoming a fan quickly of Zach Bryan.

Pablo 10-04-2019 07:12 PM

I'm gonna give it a go tonight. I hated his last album the first time I listened to it. Now I listen to it more than any of his others. He's not a guy to keep the same sound and I like that to a degree.

lewdog 10-04-2019 08:34 PM

This album is extremely disappointing. I have no idea what he's doing.

I always appreciated his classic country sound with a modern twist. Vocals with a unique tone and great lyrics.

What's the reason they make it sound like he's singing into a tin can on almost this entire album? I understand mixing country and rock beats, but this just feels like a jumbled mess. He's not expressing anything that he's talented at on this entire album. I don't see me listening to this more than a handful of times ever, it's that bad.

NewChief 10-05-2019 04:51 AM

I mean... if you read anything leading up to this, you kind of had an idea what to expect. I like the album, but it is closer to Arcade Fire meets ZZ Top than anything in his past. He’s said he’s going to do 5 albums, each with its own statement and sound, then move on.

He’s a weird, heady dude who has a specific artistic vision. It doesn’t surprise me that he got tired of a specific sound and moved on. It also doesn’t surprise me that fans who loved his country sound don’t like it. Just like I wouldn’t expect most of those fans to like CAN or Dungen or some other modern psychedelic band.

jjjayb 10-05-2019 02:18 PM

He may need to lay off the DMT a little bit.

Valiant 10-05-2019 03:11 PM

I don't know about the album but okay as a heavy metal anime knockoff.

Pablo 10-08-2019 02:46 PM

I've listened to it twice now. I don't hate it. I don't love it. I'll listen to it another couple of times and have a solid opinion.

He may have hit his peak w/ 'A Sailor's Guide to Earth'.

I'm kind of in this boat with it, as well.

It's not unlistenable, but it's not something I absolutely HAVE to hear again...

Hope he gets back to actual songs sometime, because there's 3 or 4 songs and then a bunch of cool sounds.

I'm a 'song' person.

lewdog 10-12-2019 04:42 PM

Fish 10-18-2019 08:42 AM

I thought people might be exaggerating a bit. But finally got a chance to listen to the rest of the album. Man that shit's weird....

Nope. It's just ****ing terrible. I can't even classify it into anything but trash, and I like a wide range of music.

In58men 10-21-2019 02:39 PM

This shit is trash!!!

Like worse than Nickleback. Holy shit, **** this guy.

Oh, it's not THAT bad...it's just...not what I want out of a Sturgill Simpson record...

Red Brooklyn 10-24-2019 03:17 PM

I love this album. Easily top 3 of the year.
