Broncos sign guard Kuper to 6-year deal

Quote:

The Denver Broncos signed right guard Chris Kuper a six-year contract Friday.

Kuper's deal is worth $29 million with $15 million in guarantees, an NFL source told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson.

"The fact that the Broncos are putting this much trust in me is an incredible feeling," Kuper said in a statement. "It is a dream come true. ... This is where I wanted to be because I feel like this team is headed in the right direction, and my family is excited that we can stay here and be a part of it."

Kuper, a fifth-round pick in 2006 out of the University of North Dakota, started 15 games for the Broncos last season after missing the season opener with an ankle injury.

According to Stats Inc., the 6-foot-4, 303-pound Kuper has surrendered just five sacks in 42 career starts.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said in a release Friday that the Broncos look forward to his "leadership and toughness in our efforts to build a championship caliber team."

Denver also signed fullback Kyle Eckel on Friday and released third-string quarterback Tom Brandstater as well as offensive lineman Maurice Williams.

Well deserved contract for one of the best guards in the league.

Q: There is already talk of coaches being on the hot seat, and Josh McDaniels' name has been thrown around as one of them. However, if you listen to Pat Bowlen and Joe Ellis, they seem to think they have a gem of a coach in McDaniels, and the drafting of Tim Tebow only adds to the fact that McDaniels will get at least get three years for sure, but more like 4-5 years to prove he was a good hire. Your thoughts?

-- Willie (Windsor, Colo.)

A: Willie, my thoughts, which Bowlen and Ellis are aware of, is that McDaniels is going to be a star head coach. Sometimes coaches go through growing periods -- look at Mike Shanahan in Oakland and Bill Belichick in Cleveland. And that's not to say that McDaniels won't succeed in Denver. But sometimes it takes a little time for young coaches to make their mark. Bowlen and Ellis know how skilled McDaniels is. They know how much it means to be patient in this league. And they're standing by their man -- can't blame them, as much as some Broncos fans want to.

Josh McDaniels: "No doubt" Orton is the starter
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on June 12, 2010 5:24 PM ET

Kyle Orton lined up with the Broncos starters to open the offseason, and that's where he'll remain heading into training camp.

"[Orton is the starter. He is the starter, no doubt," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said Saturday, in a variety of different ways. Here's another:

"There's nothing to be resolved really. We've got a guy who's going to go into camp as the starter, no question about it and he deserves it and if somebody comes in there and plays better than he does then that player will play."

It doesn't sound like Brady Quinn is overly close to passing Orton, but it's also silly to draw many conclusions from non-padded practices.

"It's clear, I think, that Kyle is definitely ahead, there's no question," McDaniels said. "He's playing that way and the other two guys -- I don't know if it matters if it's close or not but they're going to keep pushing him and working hard to try to improve their game so that they can make it close."

Critics of Orton have questioned his competitiveness and passion in the past. Perhaps acquiring Quinn and Tim Tebow has helped to light a fire under him.

It’s 30 minutes after the Denver Broncos completed a June minicamp practice on a warm day in the Rockies.

Future Hall of Famer and team leader Champ Bailey is relaxing near the entrance to the team’s locker room, about to enjoy the air conditioning and a post-practice meal.

Bailey suddenly points to a figure on a distant field. A solitary player remains at work.

It’s Tim Tebow.

“See that?” Bailey asks. “That’s Tebow. It’s long after practice and he’s still out there. That’s what he does. That’s not for show. He’s not just doing that because the media is here today. He does that every day.”

Tebow will not be denied :)

Gainesville Sun - EA Sports and Nike have released a special shoe for Tim Tebow.

The limited edition shoes are made of blue synthetic leather with an orange midsole and green accents. Perhaps the most interesting part of the shoe is the word "PROMISE" on the left heel with the date "September 27th, 2008" printed below it, marking the day of Tebow's famous postgame speech following a 31-30 loss to Ole Miss that many fans look at as the catalyst behind the Gators making a run to capture the BCS Championship on Jan. 8, 2009. As an added treat, Tebow's speech is printed verbatim on the insole of the shoe.

On the right heel, the shoe features the year marking Tebow's Heisman Trophy (2007), the years Tebow won the BCS title game (2007, 2009) and his All-America years (2007, 2008, 2009). The shoe also has the EA Sports logo on the tongue and "NCAA 11" in green and white letters across the velcro strap.

The shoes will be released in "extremely limited quantities in the very near future," according to Solecollector.com.

"I've actually sat down with Tebow," said Broncos outside linebacker Darrell Reid, who has been rehabbing from left knee surgery. "I call him Lucky Lefty."

"Lucky," Reid explained, is because of the great college career Tebow had at the University of Florida, where he won a Heisman Trophy and two national championships. And lefty because of his highly scrutinized southpaw throwing motion.

"Anyway, I sat down with him one day and I told him, 'I know they say you're not as talented, your arm's not as tremendous as his, but your work ethic reminds me so much of when I was with Peyton (Manning) in Indianapolis,' " said Reid, who played for the Colts from 2005-08. "I told him, 'I think you're going to do big things for us, and I can't wait to see you on the field.' "

"I think the thing people don't know about him is he's a very, very, very, very hard worker," said Reid, who will be among the injured veterans reporting today, but won't be able to participate in practice for at least two more weeks. "He's almost like a perfectionist. That's what carries him further. Most people who end up being great, it's because they want to be great and wind up working harder than everybody else."

"Whether it's working on his throwing motion or in the weight room or running, he's almost always the last guy out of the building," Reid said. "He's a very humble kid, and he's a proven winner who will do whatever it takes. That's why we love him."

The greatest work ethic in the world will never make Tebow as good as Manning.
