The Franchise 03-03-2011 12:14 PM

The Carolina Panthers just want everyone to know that they got ****ed this year. This pick should have been simple. Andrew Luck should be up at the podium holding up a Panthers jersey right now. Instead, he's back at Stanford working on his degree. And then to make matters even worse.....this draft class really isn't that great at the top. I've got a ton of options to choose from but there really isn't one guy that stands out as being worthy of the #1 overall pick. **** it...

With the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select:

A.J. Green, WR, University of Georgia

There were a couple of guys that I could've taken with this pick. Nick Fairley and Marcell Dareus could have been the pick because the Panthers have a need for a DT along their line. Bowers could have been the pick to play opposite of Charles Johnson. Hell....I guess I could have taken Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert with this pick because the Panthers really don't have much at QB. A.J. Green does two things for me.

1. Green gives the Panthers a true #1 WR. Steve Smith is old and isn't playing like the Steve Smith of old. A.J. Green allows Smith to get single coverage again.....or it allows the Panthers to trade him (once the new CBA is signed).

2. Green gives the Panthers the ability to see what they have in Clausen. If Clausen turns out to not be the QB they're looking for....then it gives the Panthers a great target for the QB they draft next year. It's not like they won't have a shot at Luck in 2012.

The Franchise 03-03-2011 12:14 PM

The Denver Broncos (Mecca) are on the clock. PM Sent

Holy ****.

Ehhh....the Panthers have so many holes. Plus they were #32 in offense.

Not saying it was a bad pick - matter of fact, I like your rationale behind it.

Nothing wrong with that pick considering there's no standout #1 this year.

DeezNutz 03-03-2011 12:24 PM

Green's probably the most talented player in the draft.

That Thomas injury could really **** us.

Green is the consensus top talent, or was before the Combne. I give Pest credit for sticking to his guns and giving his 2nd year QB a chance. I was hoping he'd fall to 4, but that was a pipe dream.

Sfeihc 03-03-2011 12:33 PM

Nicely done, Pest. It's the best pick they or you could make at this time.

I sent him a PM. I don't know how often he checks the board.

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-03-2011 01:04 PM

Given his inconsistent nature, if he missed this first pick, we'll toss him and give his picks to someone else.

This happened last year as well. He missed his pick for the Redskins and TBG made the pick for him.

Sfeihc 03-03-2011 01:19 PM

Maybe he was up late watching the Wings get jobbed?

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-03-2011 02:08 PM

A who posts 40x per day missing a pick is understandable. A guy who has posted 40 times in six months missing a pick is a bigger cause for concern given he'll have like 15 plus picks. Still, the draft has been going on for two hours, so it's no biggie.

probably patterson (edit: peterson)....but green is a great wr...not sure he's at a Calvin Johnson level due to build, but without a clear #1 QB choice, why not...

very glad the mock draft is back....

Really? You're that high on Patterson? Don't get me wrong, great prospect, but I don't see him in the mold of other elite CBs for some reason. Perhaps because I just haven't seen enough of him.

*edit*..his last name is Peterson, my bad...patterson was a kentucky bball player

i guess i was thinking about raw talent...he's pretty much a freak of nature....and i think the safest pick in the top 10, with Green a close second

he's just one of those guys you watch play and say 'wow....wow'...and he makes big plays too, not just flashy

For some reason I could not figure out who the hell TTC was talking about. I could not think of a Patterson in this draft.

But yes, Patrick Peterson is an absolute stud. When I originally had the Panthers in this mock before changing, I was trying to decide between Green, Newton, Bowers and Peterson. I am usually not a fan of picking a CB that high, but Peterson is elite.

LSU guys answer to anything. I knew exactly whom you were referring to, though I perpetuated the mistake.

the Talking Can 03-03-2011 02:53 PM

not sure the position is worth such a high pick...but everyone else has risks either due to position - QB - or background - one year wonders, suspensions,,,

i think he is near Eric Berry level in terms of being the real deal....

If it comes down to it and we have to give Mecca's teams to someone else.....I think we should just split them up between two people who are already in the draft. That would be a lot easier than trying to find another person.

I agree preferably someone who either picks before or after him most rounds too. It'd help speed things up.

The Franchise 03-03-2011 06:09 PM

I'll take one of the teams. You can give me the Broncos.....considering I draft close to them anyways.

Sfeihc 03-03-2011 06:12 PM

The Jags don't conflict with either of my two teams.

ChiefsCountry 03-03-2011 06:46 PM

AJ Green, nice pic Pes. He is the best player in the draft.

BigChiefFan 03-03-2011 07:13 PM

We should all CONFIRM we'll be ready to pick on the first day, if you're in the top 5, probably top 10 of the draft.

Direckshun 03-03-2011 08:03 PM

Welp, that first pick sucked ass.

Sorry, I love ya Pest, but you really lost the draft on that one. You picked a WR without elite speed #1 overall. Not only is that a poor investment, it's a historically bad investment. I dare you to find that happening one other time in NFL history.

I would have gone Marcell Dareus or Cam Newton or picked perhaps the best CB prospect in NFL history, which is something that actually warrants the record books. Not AJ Green.

I submit that Pest be robbed of all his picks to me for the remainder of the Mock Draft to maintain its integrity.

The best player in the draft is Patrick Peterson, and it's not even close.

LOLwut? Peterson the best player in the draft? Green has no speed? Newton as the first pick? Please tell me you are kidding.

Of all the players in this draft, name one guy who would be a Top 3 prospect in the history of his position.

Go ahead I'll wait.

Your list should be one player long. Patrick Peterson.

Direckshun 03-03-2011 08:19 PM

What, exactly does AJ Green project as?

A Greg Jennings?

Fan ****ing tastic. If I'm dropping the most money in NFL history on a receiver prospect, he better project to be the next Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson, not the next Greg Jennings.

Did you see Julio Jones come up with 10 grabs and a TD against him?

I watched when Clausen played, yes.

I don't care about their needs. With the #1 pick, you get the best prospect for your team. It'd be Dareus or Cam Newton if I was picking.

RealSNR 03-03-2011 09:06 PM

Okay okay, I admit it.

I paid off Pestilence to make the AJ Green pick so more teams would be tempted to take Bowers/Fairley/Dareus later in the first round so the Vikings would have a good shot at a top QB- either Newton or Gabbert.

Am I sorry? A little. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat

Titty Meat 03-03-2011 09:58 PM

It's pretty evident Direckshun didn't watch much college football. AJ Green was a difference maker with a shitty QB. Peterson will be a good CB but he's not top 3 he's barely ahead of Amukamara as the best corner in the draft.

Some mocks have Peterson going to the Broncos from the NFLN. And I'd rather have Peterson over Amukamara.

KurtCobain 03-03-2011 10:42 PM

They should take Peterson number one overall.

RealSNR 03-03-2011 10:44 PM

I move that Mecca gets kicked out of the Four Horsemen. True Fans are on the rise, and it's likely due to the fact that he's been missing. And now he might miss his pick.

Nonsequitor.

He's at LEAST a Top 6 All Time CB prospect.

Which is something you cannot say for any other prospect in this draft at their position.

Amukamara, by the way, kicks ass. He's a really good corner.

But Peterson is far and away the better prospect.

Going forward, I'd stick to the personal attacks more than I would substantive argument, billay.

Denver isn't going to draft Peterson. I would draft Peterson over Amukamara but it's pretty close and it's not far fetched to say Amukamra could even end up being better than Peterson considering he has only played the position for a few years. The debate is silly anyway you're going to draft a CB #1 make him one of the highest paid players in the league with no pass rush? They already drafted Clausen, signed Shockey, and have a great running game. Maybe they keep Smith around 1 more year and add Green that's building a great offense.

Uhh dude Pot + Kettle = Black. Peterson went from being a Top 3 all time prospect to a top 6 in a matter of hours huh?

So you're trying to say the cornerback position has more value than an offensive playmaker? Really?

That's not a knock on Peterson. Amukamara is a hell of a player.

No, I wouldn't. But I'd do that sooner than I would draft a receiver #1 who doesn't have elite size or speed.

They had one of the worst run games last year. Jon Stewart was in Fox's doghouse all year and Williams can't stay healthy.

At the expense of adding a much better prospect to bolster their pathetic defense.

Depends on the systems you run. If you run a bump-and-run man coverage scheme, but run more of an offense akin to Vermiel's Chiefs, I'd say a lockdown corner would be more prominent than a receiver.

But it's apples and oranges anyway.

You are picking someone who has the best shot at helping you out the most. Peterson, an elite prospect, has that in spades. You cannot carry the same guarantee with Green, because he lacks elite speed and size.

But I'd still pick Dareus over both of them if I'm Carolina.

Titty Meat 03-03-2011 11:14 PM

You keep saying green doesn't have size or speed but neither is true you are watching too much combine which is useless. The way the rules are setup CB's are at a disadvantage a playing making WR > Cornerback. Period.

I'll ask this and be done with it.

You're building a team from scratch.

If given the choice between Greg Jennings and Darrelle Revis, who would you pick.

Titty Meat 03-03-2011 11:21 PM

BTW Green played LSU twice. One game he had 3 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown the next year he had 5 catches 99 yards and a touchdown. It'd be interesting to see who was covering him I'd be willing to take a guess.

This is a loaded question. Peterson isn't Revis and Green isn't Jennings.

Just asking.

You said you'd take a playmaker WR over a cornerback every time.

Got the answer I wanted, though.

Have at.

Yep.....PM me with a reminder of the teams.

ChiefsCountry 03-04-2011 12:41 AM

So if Mecca doesn't show, here is my idea for replacing his picks. Since his teams rotate in draft spot - whoever picks in front of him would just pick twice in a row. I think it would be easier than trying to decide who gets the other teams. What do you guys think?

Mecca 03-04-2011 01:26 AM

Wow Green with the first pick eh?

In that case with I'll go with.....Clemson DE DaQuan Bowers

With the resigning of Bailey and Robert Quinn not playing for a year I think this is the best pick for this team..

Would have gone QB but given Fox's past track record and him being a defensive guy I figuure he goes Bowers and thinks he can win with a game manager like Orton.

DaKCMan AP 03-04-2011 06:07 AM

I'll chime in on the Peterson discussion. I've posted this before in another thread.

Peterson is a very good CB. Great size, athleticism, and a physical player. However, he's overrated IMO. He's not the caliber of a Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson, or Darrelle Revis but is better coming out of college than Terrance Newman, Quentin Jammer, and Malcom Jenkins.

I'd rather have Joe Haden who I think is a better cover corner than Peterson, just shorter (and slower in 40 time). Haden had an outstanding rookie season for the Browns.

DeezNutz 03-04-2011 06:19 AM

Fitzpatrick is not the long-term answer in Buffalo. Many mocks are trending toward Newton coming off the board here, and there's also a lot of speculation that Von Miller could be the pick. Neither should be the selection.

The Bills went to a 3-4 last season, and unlike a team we know, they selected a NT (Troup), so this isn't as pressing a need as some suggest. QB is, however, and thus they select the best prospect at this position in the draft.

Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri.

Can the Bengals trade their 4th pick for a real head coach?

The problem in Cincinatti isn't the head coach.

Much like the Redskins, the Bengals are ****ed because of ownership.

Marvin Lewis has tried to get Mike Brown to stay away from players in the draft with questionable character, to no avail.

He signed a contract extension a couple of months ago, and says that he was given some concessions in order to get him to re-sign, and I would assume that includes a different philosophy in the draft.

Personally, I think Jimmy Smith is better in coverage than Peterson or Amakumura. He is a really good bump and run guy, but his tackling isn't as good.

Amakamura doesn't play as fast as his timed speed. You can watch Blackmon beat him to a pulp on highlight clips. He gets behind him many times.

Dude....not even close in comparisons.

And I'm not taking Peterson because the need and value don't match up for the Panthers.

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-04-2011 10:58 AM

I know this seems crazy because the Bengals have a pretty big hole at 3 technique, their QB wants out, they are going to need a #1 WR and they just gave Jonathan Joseph a 1st and 3rd tender, but this guy is just too damned good to pass up.

I think Fairley will be good, but he worries me
Dareus doesn't really stand out
I don't know what to think of Newton
Jones wasn't a top 10 pick before the Combine
The Bengals don't need undersized edge rushers
There aren't any Eric Berry's available at SS this year (which is a damned vortex in this draft)

This kid is just the best player, period. He's a very, very rare talent.

The Cincinnati Bengals select Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

Peterson gives them three quality CBs. If they are facing a base package, I think he's athletically gifted enough that they could use him similar to the way that the Packers use Woodson, but more than anything, I want him taking away half the field, and I want Hall and Joseph there to feast on the QBs need to put it elsewhere.

Archie Bunker 03-04-2011 11:51 AM

Well Deez pretty much made this pick for me by taking the only QB I would touch this high. I'm just not sold on Newton's accuracy and brains to take him this high and hand him the keys to my franchise. I might regret it in a few years but for some reason I doubt it.

With QBs off the board, Bradford in St. Louis and an offensive wiz like Harbaugh in SF, this pick makes itself. It's time to beef up the D and get someone to terrorize QBs out of our 3-4. I think this guy can be a cornerstone for the Cards.

The Arizona Cardinals select Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
