Teicher also writes that Lilja was and is receptive.

Two things:

1. This is bad, bad, bad news for Rodney Hudson's recovery.

2. The Chiefs must have hated the crop of centers this year in the draft.

I bet this has a lot more to do with Allen...especially if they are gonna go

Albert
Lilja
Hudson
Asamoah

And then let Allen and Stephenson battle to death for the right tackle spot.

Ragnar Lodbrok 04-09-2013 02:35 PM

Wow, Rodney is toast.

mcaj22 04-09-2013 02:53 PM

guess this is what they think about all the wasted picks scooter had on offensive lineman if they have to bring Lilja back to start.

sad really

Or, maybe because Hudson is the only C on the roster.

****ing drama queens.

He signed already?

RealSNR 04-09-2013 03:01 PM

The Chiefs want to win now and (let's just assume) Rodney Hudson isn't recovering very well.

They bring in Ryan Lilja to start at center when he did a pretty meh job of it last year?

Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not really thrilled by this news. Lilja adds veteran leadership (especially if Albert is gone), I guess, but I was hoping we'd have upgraded the interior line by now.

The Chiefs have approached Ryan Lilja about playing another season, and the veteran offensive lineman was receptive to the idea, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Lilja, who played in high school at Shawnee Mission Northwest and in college at Kansas State, said immediately after the end of last season that he would retire. Lilja, 31, has played nine NFL seasons, six for Indianapolis and the last three for the Chiefs.

The three-year contract Lilja signed when he joined the Chiefs has expired, and he is an unrestricted free agent.

Lilja said at the end of last season that he would have surgeries on his knee and toe that he had put off until his career was finished. He said at the time it was unlikely he would eventually reconsider his decision to retire.

“Physically, you hit a wall and your body kind of tells you to start thinking about it,’’ he said. “I wanted to be in a place where I was at peace with my decision and could move forward and never regret it. I’m there.’’

Lilja was a guard for the first eight seasons of his NFL career before moving to center last year after the Chiefs lost Rodney Hudson. It’s unclear what position Lilja would play. The Chiefs have Hudson returning at center and Jeff Allen and Jon Asamoah returning at guard.

The Chiefs also signed Geoff Schwartz, who can play both guard and tackle, as a free agent.

The Chiefs begin offseason practice next week, when they hold a three-day minicamp at their Truman Sports Complex facility.

i think the LG position is wide open as they probably think Jeff Allen is terrible there. Rightfully so, and thus, need a LG.

HemiEd 04-09-2013 03:07 PM

Oh ****ing great, hopefully he doesn't make it out of training camp.
