Yu-Gi-Oh!

I have a 6 year old that asked for and recieved a bunch of these playing cards. Anyone have any experience with this game? I have read about 3/4 of the rulebook and it seems complicated to me, let alone a 6 year old. I would like to play the game with him. Anyone have any experience playing? I saw some cards selling on Ebay for $2500.00, and yes, someone actually bid!

I collected sports cards when I was a kid so I understand the value and education a kid gains from the hobby, but these cards seem to be a HUGE fad.
Any input will be appreciated!

thanks

A few years back my son spent a ton of money on that crap, and then eventually gave them all away. It seemed incredibly stupid to me.

my boys keep wanting them
I buy'em a football or basketball and we go play

Coach 02-13-2007 08:32 PM

I don't even touch that crap, or the Poke-mon crap either.

You want real ****ing cards? Go buy a real ****ing card, which is a baseball, football, hockey, or basketball card, dammit!

A Pikachu card, within the next 50-60 years, isn't gonna even come close breaking $100, let alone, $50, whereas an Albert Pujols rookie card is gonna be worth shitload of money once Albert retires and possibly breaking most of the major statistics.

my little sister traded all her pokemon cards for an N64 a while back. that kid got suckered those cards are worth about 5 bucks now. i agree with the baseball/FBall/Bball cards idea. i have about 1500 and those might actually be worth something in a few years unlike game cards

Actually the game seems to resemble D-n-D and Warcraft. I really enjoyed Warcraft for a while, until the big 40 man raid stuff was the only thing left to do. Just thought this game might be something fun to do with my boy until the snow is gone.

went thru pokemon and Yu-Gi-oh ...

the game is kinda complicated but you can simplify it pretty easy

draw 5 cards to start then draw 1/play 1 each turn
life points of 2000(or whatever you want)
monsters have attack power ... defense power
you can put them in attack mode or defense mode
some magic cards have special effects that apply for certain monsters
alot of the info is actually written on the cards themselves
you attack each other until somebody loses all their points
monsters in defense mode don't cost you points if the lose a battle
you can have up to 5 monters played at once
you can have up to 5 magic cards played at once

just read the basic rules and apply as many of them as fits the age of your kid.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that kind of fun and all. I'm just simply saying, that get your boy to at least keep some solid names (Pujols, Zito, Jeter, etc etc) cards in mint condition, whereas sometime down the road, those cards will increase in value, where he can get money in return by selling them off.

I got quite a collection that I'm planning to hold onto until whereas I may be at the 60-70 age (If I live that long, of course) where I may sell it off and get additional revenue.

I have 2 cards, out of God knows how much I got (Which I do have a BUNCH of them) and they both to me, will bring high value down the road.

2006 Topps Red Hot Rookies 1 Reggie Bush (Mint Condition)

My daughter was obsessed with You-gi-oh cards a year or so ago. She wanted to buy them constantly and often did... or actually I did. I even bought her a book with plastic sheets to keep them in... now she's pretty much bored with them.

She tried to show me how to play the game but honestly I just didn't get it... but she sure did. Kids are just wired to understand that crap these days I think.

NewChief 02-13-2007 09:20 PM

My experience with the cards is that kids that age don't actually play the game. They just get the cards and compare them and crap, basically like collecting matchbox/hot wheels cars. There is a game to be played, but my 6 year old cousin doesn't actually play it. He just wants cards, cards, and more cards.

Right when Magic: The Gathering came out, a bunch of friends and I played all the time in college. It was a lot of fun to sit around and play. Made for some interesting social circles as well, because we ended up having Magic parties with people we'd never normally hang out with. Anway, the fad eventually went away. On a tangent, I know one of the guys that invented Magic which then morphed into the company Wizards of the Coast, which then bought out TSR and was subsequently bought out by Hasbro. He and his buddies invented the game while attending a small liberal arts college in the Northwest. He's now a multi-millionairre and probably one of the more eccentric rich people you'd ever meet.

Never the cards but I have played the gameboy version.. seems to me it would be cheaper for you just to buy them the game instead of the trading card game...

We used to play Magic: The Gathering all the time. It kicks all those other loser card game's asses.
