A few possible explanations:

1) The ice spear didn't explode- it pierced the dragon, which is supposedly "fire made flesh" causing the inner flame to burst outward.

2) The NK is potentially a powerful warg/greenseer like Bran (maybe that's why he was chosen by the Children) and set this trap specifically to capture a dragon.

I've got nothing to explain why he didn't target Drogon. That would have ended the series too soon, I guess.

So the ballista that pierced Drogon just didnt go in far enough for him to explode as well?

Possibly not.

It also wasn't magical in nature like the Night King's ice spear.

I think the angles were different. The spear entered aimed for the heart/chest area through an angle. Bronn's scorpion spear was head on and went into the shoulder/wing.

Do you remember when the Three-eyed Raven told Bran that he will never walk again but he would fly? Is it possible that Bran wargs into the ice dragon and turns on the Night King?

If Bran could do that, would it be possible for him to turn the dragon back from the dead to the living - like happily ever after?

If warging into a bird/dragon counts as flying in the prophecy, then it seems likely that Bran has warged into a walking animal from time to time and that doesn't fit the prophecy. Not that consistency in this fantastic story is required or anything.

I figure it had more to do with the nature of the spear itself (some evil enchanted ice shit versus regular old metal).

Remember though, Jaime said they have no shot at winning a fight against the Dothraki, they looked like they were having fun or a game not war to them.

Did it say Cersei invited Sansa? Maybe Jon/Dany sent the raven.

Well the spear would have just shattered on Jon Snow's plot armor anyway.

I don't think it's as complicated as y'all are making it out to be - the dragon was breathing fire when it was hit and the spear punctured it in the neck/chest, breaking whatever seal must have existed between whatever fuels their fire and whatever ignites (and was currently igniting) the fuel.

I believe that once Jon and Dany sleep together, she will become pregnant.
