Orange is the New Black - Netflix Streaming TV

This is a new series that is streaming on Netflix instant.

It got a good review on the AV Club.

Let's talk about it here. About to watch the first episode.

Buck 07-11-2013 08:15 PM

Wow, within the first minute there are 3 sets of naked breasts.

kcxiv 07-11-2013 10:12 PM

ill check it out tonight! I seen the previews, we will see.

Buck 07-11-2013 10:40 PM

First two episodes are pretty funny.

Bowser 07-11-2013 10:53 PM

Laura Prepon as a lesbian drug smuggler. Interesting.

KcMizzou 07-13-2013 06:48 PM

After 4 episodes, I really like it.

Judging by "Netflix Original" standards, It's not quite "House of Cards", but it's way, way better than "Hemlock Grove". (Never even finished that)

kcxiv 07-14-2013 01:50 AM

Pretty decent so far. The "wife" angle has me cracking up. Im only on the 3rd or 4th episode though.

rocknrolla 07-14-2013 09:39 AM

I'm through 7 episodes. Pretty good so far. All the tits in the frst episode were just a teaser. Haven't seen another since.

Saw a bit of it when a roomie was watching it and was impressed though not sure I could do a whole season in the settings the show is in.

But Weeds was so amazing it deserves a good shot from me.

You must not be looking hard enough...

KcMizzou 07-15-2013 06:36 PM

"2 strikes, she's out. Russians don't play baseball"

Heheh.

aturnis 07-15-2013 11:41 PM

That's about where I am. Series is pretty good.

KcMizzou 07-16-2013 07:36 PM

The best thing about it is that it's not at all what you'd expect. All the characters are developed and humanized. There are as many uplifting moments as depressing ones.

It's not just "Pretty white girl Piper gets thrown in with the savages". The other inmates are just as interesting as she is, and there are a lot of them.

Mav 07-16-2013 10:29 PM

I must find time to watch. I love Laura Prepon.

This was a nice surprise. It isn't Two broke girls dogshit. Not liking the Piper-That 70s show girl (she's terrible) storyline, but only on the third episode.

underEJ 07-17-2013 04:22 PM

I agree. Laura Prepon really is terrible in this so far, 5 eps watched. Had a minor quibble with the screw driver mishap.

Spoiler!

Holy crap! Quite an ending to season one.

Anyong Bluth 07-17-2013 10:10 PM

Watched the 1st episode, pretty decent.

Netflix needs to do a better job of getting the word out about their new series- I just happened to come across it by chance. Even if they don't wanna do radio, tv spots or internet ads, I would think they would feature or draw more attention to it when you get to the Netflix main screen?? Maybe its just the Roku interface that's weak in showcasing stuff because I've not even seen a push to showcase that House of Cards or Arrested Development's new season is available- though they did do traditional media promoing for those 2 and all. But, this show and that other horror original series that's supposed to be dogshit get not even a peep of promo buzz???

Deberg_1990 07-28-2013 02:57 PM

Great show so far. I've only finished two episodes. Holy crap, Janeway/Mulgrew has changed alot.

Rausch 07-28-2013 03:04 PM

I'm 4 shows in and while I didn't enjoy it as much as "House Of Cards" it wasn't meant to be a straight drama.

I like the story, and I do like how much they do get right about prison life. I suspect the writer/s had some time in. I think my biggest gripe is how when they transition from drama to humor they completely break from credibility.

They didn't have to do that.

That said my guess would be the "money" had their say and changed a few things.

Funny thing is I like (I'd give it 4 NETFLIX stars) the show but have no desire to work in a women's pen or read about one...

Same here.

There's a lot I can look at and say that they've put time in. Much of this is authentic.

Some parts aren't but that's "based on a true story" stuff that get's ****ed up once you have producers and directors.

What I did like was that bridge between "normal" life and "inside life." Ok in one is not ok in the other and the show did a good job illustrating that...

Finished episode 3. Like it a lot.

Jason Biggs is by far the worst character on the show. Then again, I also ****ing hate Jason Biggs.

I think alot of people fail to realize that. There is just way different rules when your inside. Ive known alot of people who have been inside and alot of them dont like to talk about the shit they had to do. Me being Mexican and in Cali, it can get brutal just trying to survive in there.

You have no choice unless you want to be a bitch or dead.

I'm nine episodes in. It's fine -- good not great. Keeping my interest enough to want to finish it. But hardly groundbreaking or anything like that. Some great scenes, some terrible writing here and there. But, like I said, I'll keep watching. No deal breakers, here.

Took me until I started perusing the IMDB page for the show this past week to make the connection that Pornstache is Nick Sobatka.

I think SNR is clear, but for eve3ryone else, if it Biggs, or Larry you hate?

I;ve always been cool with Biggs, and I think that the character is a necessary counterpoint [now, I'm only through ep 8, so there's room for him to really asshole it up still.

I'm much more irritated that Piper is leaning back towards Alex. I hate the whole 'one love interest is a total ass, but is your 'true love' and the other one is a generally standup partner, but every misstep is overanalyzed and blown out of proportion b/c they're not 'true love'' trope of romcoms.

Both.

I wouldn't say profiting on your partner's confidences is the act of a standup partner. Then again, there are a lot of things to hate about Chapman as well. Basically, they're both douchey self-centered assholes, but one of them isn't Biggs. Biggs just has such a whiney demeanor, or at least every character he portrays does.

He's supposed to be that guy.

Completely supportive to the point of being needy and insecure. Even after facing his worst fear about his wife being in prison does he cut it off or does he stick with her?

Why?

I think that's the point they're trying to get across...

Probably mostly "Larry" but Biggs just seems kind of annoying as well.

The whole relationship seems a bit phony to me. They hadn't been together that long and it seems kind of implausible that he would remain so devoted to her after the all the shit, unless he is just imagining taking advantage of all the freaky 3-way stuff that she is probably cool with.

I'm curious (not enough to read the book the show is based on though) as to what really happened and what is fiction for the show. Was Larry really like that? Hard to believe, and I'm sure it is embellished.

I tried to google a 'fact vs fiction' article but didn't come up with anything decent. Baby Lee--what do you have on fact vs fiction on this show?

Let me ask you this: if your wife was convicted today for something she did over a decade ago (before you met her) would you stand by her?

Really?...

There's a difference between a wife and a fiance of how long? I may be wrong, but I thought it was like a year or less? And it's not about what she did a decade ago, it's about her cheating on him now.

Baby Lee 08-11-2013 07:20 PM

It was truly lazy for Crazy Eyes to deliver her soliloquy on the Psych ward then go straight to Pennsytucky in said Psych ward.

THEN, officer pegleg give Daya the key to Pornstache;s heart out ofhte blue

LAZY

Prison rules, it all changes in there. lol its a tough situation though. I guess you would have to be in that position and see how it goes. i'd probably be like im out. I honestly wouldnt be upset or mad at her. It would just be time to move on if she has feelings for someone else.

Should get the finale in before bed.

Absolutely LOVE this show though!

New to the show. 5 episodes in. So far: enjoying it. Sometimes it errs on the side of being too voyeuristic, but there are some very nice performances here. Interesting group of writers and directors.

cosmo20002 06-07-2014 01:34 PM

1st ep was stupid, as was most of the 2nd ep. Now that they have a hit, it seems pretty clear they are doing a lot of padding with filler so they can squeeze out more episodes and seasons.

Spoiler!

Good deal of stupidity in those first two.

A) Why would you ever move inmates at night? Stupid.

B) Why would you ever put male and female inmates together? You don't. Ever...

ragedogg69 06-09-2014 10:10 AM

Moving inmates kinda makes sense if that plane was just a quick stop off to here area, but it looked like her stop was first. So that plot was merely for convenience. I think that Piper not being told was pretty unrealistic.

Some characters were being stupid this season, but I think that it is more organic than say The Walking Dead, which hits their characters with the stupid stick, just for the plot.

ragedogg69 06-09-2014 10:15 AM

Also, I forgot about my crush on Maritza from last season. Diane Guerrero can get it!

Not a big fan of what Vee is turning Suzanna [crazy eyes] into.

ragedogg69 06-10-2014 02:56 PM

My guess is making her into less of a cartoon character. My god, last season when she asked Piper "Why does everyone call me Crazy Eyes?" just broke my heart.

Black Cindy's back story was awful. Talk about a total piece of shit. First character for me to feel that way. Normally, there is something redeemable for them.

I don't know if it was better, but it was very good. (just finished season 2 last night) I really liked getting all the back story on the other inmates. As they remind her often, it's not all about Piper.

Yeah, I thought it was better mainly because there was very little Piper/Biggs. The back stories of the other inmates was entertaining and seemed to bring something new to each episode.

I think the people your fiance works with don't know what the eff they're talking about.

If anything, this season is BETTER... much more focus on the prison dynamic and how you survive. Not everyone has it as easy as Piper did in season 1, and they show that.

Also... super hot naked asian chick alert.

It's like there's a whole other hole.

Baby Lee 06-30-2014 08:15 PM

I don't know how to apportion blame between Vee playing her like a fiddle, and mentally off Suzanne gulping it up, but after Suzanne pouring water over dying Rosa's meal to make her move when there was room to sit anywhere, mother **** those two.

Baby Lee 07-02-2014 10:50 PM

Am I missing something.

One episode, Daya is telling Bennett that the baby is a boy because on boob is bigger than the other, and they agree to name him Frank.

Next episode, she's telling him she 'feels HER, really feels HER' inside herself. And no mention of 'I thought it was a boy' or any other explanation.

Just a lack of attention to detail, or did I miss a plot development somewhere along the way?

Hays 07-03-2014 07:07 AM

Same ep that she said her boob was bigger she said maybe its a girl.
