New Weird Al Yankovic Album!!!

Well the new Video for Weird Al is on the Nerdist but is completely borked cause the server can't handle the traffic going to it. It has a bunch of cameos in it and I thought it was pretty funny

http://www.nerdist.com/vepisode/weir...arrells-happy/

Since this site is dead.....He has it directly on his site. http://www.weirdal.com/

But I guess someone loaded the songs up to daily motion so you can hear them all.

Here is one that needs to be played at Chiefs games

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x21...ong_shortfilms

It's really insane when you think about it. Who else is out there that had a 30-year career in the music industry? He's never been a superstar, but he's never really had a total clunker of an album that entire time.

At this point I think most artists kind of take it as a honor when he parodies one of their songs. With a few exceptions.... Coolio.

Don't artists have to give him permission first to make the parody?

Or was it not needed for Gangster/Amish Paradise because it already heavily sampled Stevie wonder?

You need zero permission to make a parody.

Al asks for it because he's a swell guy.

There was a misunderstanding between Al's people and Coolio's people. Al thought he had permission, but Coolio didn't give it. There are no legal repercussions for Al - you don't need permission from artists to parody - but it's not his style to piss artists off.

Demonpenz 07-14-2014 09:14 PM

Weird Al kicks ass. He said he was at Princes table at the VMA's in the 80's and Princes body Guards made him sign a concent that he wouldn't make eye contact with prince. Weird Al has some stories about lots artists that is for sure.

alnorth 07-14-2014 09:44 PM

yeah, the Supreme Court specifically ruled on parody long ago, saying they are protected free speech, even if you make money on parodies.

Weird Al has always said that he wants to go the extra mile to get permission because he doesn't want to piss off the artist and make sure they are in on the joke. I'm sure he really does feel that way to some extent, but its also probably good business. Even if you are certain you'll win in court, you don't really "win" if you had to spend a fortune fighting a lawsuit from some angry demented musician with plenty of money to burn.

Nope.

I grew up listening to him casually like most children of the 80's.

It was just a joke.

He's reportedly one of the nicest guys around, so I am happy to see he's still having success and doing his thing as an artist with a unique slant on meshing of the mediums.

For the record, I was insanely obsessed with seeing UHF the moment I first saw the previews, and remember distinctly my joy of seeing it at the old Crown Center theaters on a Saturday matinée opening weekend.

You're a very, very, very lucky little boy. You know why? You get to drink from... THE FIRE HOOOOOSE!!!

Troll not.

What rock have you been under?

Since the video is so dope, I'll just post the embed. It's also on the Despicable Me II soundtrack and won a Grammy for such.

As you'll see at the end, there's even a 24 Hours of Happy video, where the song plays on a loop and people all over the entire world dance to it. There were even some in the ME who went to jail over it because of national prohibition on dancing.

Ive seriously never heard it. I only listen to classic rock and sports talk radio, and dont watch TV except for movies, sports, and TV shows that I download.

Guess that's why.

Well, that song has overwhelmingly blanketed pop culture damned near everywhere. I don't listen to radio at all and hardly ever watch TV, and I've heard "happy" a few times. As mentioned earlier, it even rose to the level of serious news story where people in idiotic, repressive, backward countries were arrested for dancing to it.

While it looks like there MIGHT have been an edit somewhere, I absolutely guarantee you, that was all done in ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT. That was a bit of a challenge for me, because I start the video on a 5th floor fire escape, and I reappear on street level wearing completely different clothes. That means - for EVERY TAKE - as soon as the camera was off me I had to run down 5 flights of stairs WHILE CHANGING MY CLOTHES so I could be on camera again at the end. Definitely got my workout THAT day!
That's impressive.

Well somehow I still missed it. Catchy tune though, really like Pharrell after hearing him on the new Daft Punk album.

cabletech94 07-15-2014 07:30 PM

i saw him in concert back in october in tulsa (where uhf was filmed)!

dude waaaaails in concert. well, my point was, i was in the 2nd row, and as he was wailing, a little bit of spit shot from his mouth and hit my shoulder. i have yet to wash.

I tip my hat to the guy when album sales are down, and the genre of music videos is almost on death's doorstep, for creating a nice PR / media event. Wise use of use of highly trafficked web content providers, when typically only the a handful of major artists create a blip in the news cycle when releasing a new album.

Kudos to him for attacking the market in a new / unique approach in the digital, new age of the music industry!

I think that a lot of his staying power has come from his ability to constantly adapt to new things (both musically and in terms of marketing). From UHF and Al TV back in the day to this distribution model today, he's always had a great feel for how to get noticed.

I'll fully admit to try before you buy when it comes to music, especially new bands. I also make sure that I support the artists that I do enjoy / listen to their music. To a degree, I also try to make an effort to see independent / smaller films that are intriguing / or actually attempt to be original or thought provoking. Either by checking it out at the box office, or in recent years, a lot of independent films are available On Demand either concurrently with their theatrical release or very shortly after.

It's a fair trade off, now, but those teenage years it's not financially possible for most, so I can understand to a degree why there's always a segment of people who simply pirate it.

To be fair, those fans, typically younger, also tend to go to more concerts and / or buy affiliated merchandise by an artist. Which in today's industry, and even back in the day to a lesser percentage, is where most artists make the lionshare of their money. The typical recording deal for an artist is around 6 points. That's 6%, so if an album is $9.99, the artist will see $0.60 on each cd sold. In fact, that number is lower in reality, because the label take a portion of that back to cover expenses like promotion, music videos, and other various expenses.

Of course it hurts the bottom line and is a loss for the artist, but it is exponentially a much larger hit for the label. Unless you are a rare mega artist or band that sold astronomical numbers, like the douches in Metallica, who ended up alienating a lot of fans. Plus, it hasn't completely killed mega sales- Taylor Swift, for example. The digital age has simply created a shift in the business model, and to a degree, created a vehicle for lesser known bands to gain a following and raise ticket sales when they do tour.

For me, my taste in music is so limited I mostly listen to the same shit I grew up on and bought/lost CD's/tapes of several times. I pirate maybe 1-3 albums a year. And probably half of those get deleted because Im so stuck in my ways and dont like hardly anything else. My entire music library (half lossless and half 320 kb/s mp3) is only 40 GB.

I saw him at Worlds of fun in '84, it was a great time. I would get this Record, but I haven't heard of 95% of the songs. I guess it shows my age.

Lowlife? Harsh, dude. I torrent every TV show I watch. I'm on the road all the time. My options are limited.

$6 bucks is nothing.

I just like things simple. Kickass is very simple.
