Starcraft II!

Just announced at Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Korea.

IGN and 1up have coverage

http://games.ign.com/articles/790/790137p1.html

Fishpicker 05-19-2007 03:16 AM

still just the 3 races? were there not any other races from expansion packs or anything?

RedDread 05-19-2007 03:41 AM

doubtful, but blizzard has been known to hide certain key aspects of the game until right before release.

From the early look at the website ( http://www.starcraft2.com/ ) it seems that they're going to be scrapping a lot of the units from Starcraft 1. I hope this is on a bigger scale than WCIII (ie higher unit cap.)

007 05-19-2007 03:52 AM

I have been wanting this game for years. It is about time they started it.

Ultra Peanut 05-19-2007 04:04 AM

Holy shit. I was all but certain it was going to be World of Starcraft.

This is way cooler, though.

SLAG 05-19-2007 07:34 AM

I hope it will run on a PIII 500

Silock 05-19-2007 07:41 AM

Meh. I'll hold off judgment for now. The original Starcraft was badass, and I still play it, but this just looks like the same game. The graphics aren't any different.

Delano 05-19-2007 08:13 AM

Why not Diablo 3? They just made Warcraft 3 and isn't Starcraft pretty much the same game with different themes?

Crashride 05-19-2007 09:02 AM

Are you guys kidding me...the games potential is endless. Blizzard will find a way to make this interesting with all these new units and capabilities. Simple works better...it doesnt need to have the best graphics

TrickyNicky 05-19-2007 09:23 AM

I'm sure it will be a good to great RTS, but their are so many RTS's on the market that I don't know if it will be a huge hit in the US.

keg in kc 05-19-2007 09:24 AM

Awesome.

And thank god it's not an MMO. I don't need more MMO's.

I think I'm done with MMO's for a while myself. Nearly 3 years with WoW, and I'm burnt out. I bought LOTRO, but I dont play that either. I'm gonna cancel both accounts.

Right now the only game that's really on my radar is Mass Effect.

Deberg_1990 05-19-2007 11:28 PM

Wow..i cant believe they waited so long to make a sequel. The original came out like 10 years ago didnt it?? 97 or 98?

I can't think of another PC game that has been this highly anticipated. Half Life 2 was probably it before this announcement but that appealed to a smaller segment of gamers than this will.

If it doesn't suck I guarantee that it will be a phenomenon that will surpass any previous PC game in terms of units sold. I mean hell, it's the national pastime in South Korea.

Reception

StarCraft was the number-one selling PC Game of 1998, selling over 9.5 million copies worldwide.[1] As of 2006, over a third of total sales, or 3.5 million copies, have been sold in South Korea.[4] Blizzard's Battle.net online gameplaying service grew over 800 percent after StarCraft's release.[32] StarCraft remains one of the most popular online games in the world.[33]

StarCraft received a star on the floor of the Metreon as part of the Walk of Game in San Francisco in early 2006.[34] IGN rated the game as the 7th best on its Top Games of All Time in both 2003 and 2005 edition, calling it the "best real time strategy game ever made". It also placed #2 among PC games, behind Sid Meier's Civilization II.[35][36] Gamespot named StarCraft one of the greatest games of all time.[34]

Not without criticism, the game suffers from "coarse resolution".[37] It was also noted at release for the problem of "rushing" during multi-player mode, or allowing players to swiftly conquer one another by attacking first instead of allowing time to build up forces, though rushing has since developed into a normal feature of game play and strategy.[38]

[edit] Legacy

Main article: StarCraft professional competition

After its release StarCraft grew in popularity in South Korea, establishing a successful Pro-gaming Scene.[39] Pro-gamers in South Korea are TV stars. Starcraft Games are broadcasted over three television channels dedicated to the Professional Gaming Scene.[40] Pro-gamers in South Korea have gained television contracts, sponsorships, and tournament prizes allowing the most famous player, Lim Yo-Hwan (known in-game as SlayerS `BoxeR`)[41] to gain a fanclub of over half a million people.[4] Professional gamers dedicate a lot of time in playing StarCraft to prepare for the highly competitive Leagues. Lee Yun-Yeol, a Terran player known as [Red]NaDa, reported earnings in 2005 of $200,000 USD.[33]

ROFL @ "on second thought..."

Based on what I read, rushing will still be a part of the game in Starcraft II. In fact, it will be enhanced in some ways. There is talk of quicker and more varied tech tree options to allow you to have a variety of rush strategies and counter-strategies.

I highly recommend it although I haven't played through that much of it yet. But what I have seen is very impressive (yea, I know it's an older game).

Back to the front page with ye!

It appears that attendees to this year's Blizzcon (Aug. 3rd & 4th Anaheim, CA) will be receiving a beta key to Starcraft II

"BlizzCon Swag, Beta Key and Murloc Suit! - 6/4/2007

We'll be handing out plenty of Blizzard swag at BlizzCon for attendees to show off to their friends. However, we wanted to give out even more, so we'll also be providing a beta key for an upcoming Blizzard game. If you're not enticed yet, you should definitely check out the in-game murloc suit, an item that can be redeemed and given to your favorite World of Warcraft character. Love or hate the murlocs, you won't want to miss this opportunity to blend in with them!"

Hmmm, I wonder which upcoming game that could be.....

edit: also, not a big surprise but Blizzard has said the game won't be released in '07

Im not so sure its SC II it might be there new NextGen MMo they have been Hiring ppl for.

RedDread 06-05-2007 03:20 AM

Aye but I don't think that it would be anywhere near alpha as SC II is right now, unless they are gonna drop a bombshell and announce it at Blizzcon. Heck at this point I would be more expecting news on the next WoW Xpac...but either way I'd be happy with a beta invite for whatever they're working on.

StarCraft 2 to be released as a trilogy

And here you thought there'd be no big StarCraft 2 announcement after its conspicuous absence from the BlizzCon 2008 opening ceremony. Rob Pardo, executive vice-president of game design at Blizzard announced that the campaign version of the game will be a trilogy, each part focusing on a separate race.
  • Terrans - Wings of Liberty
  • Zerg - Heart of the Swarm
  • Protoss - Legacy of the Void
Sure, it's not a release date, but for those still hopeful, there's always tomorrow night's closing ceremonies. We'll get more info on this as we have it, like will it all be in one box? Will we have to buy separate discs? Can we have it now, please?

Update: Yes, you'll have to buy separate discs. According to Pardo, "It's a separate product. Look at the next two as expansion packs, but will have the feel of stand alone products." Meaning yes, we'll be charging you more money.

They make it sound like the second and third will be treated similar to a add-on so those might only be $30 each. Either way its BS and a massive money grab on their part.

We can blame Steam for this though. They started the episodic releases. Now Blizzard is going to try to get three releases out of one for regular price instead of limited price.

the thing that pisses me off the most is they said each one will effect multiplayer so are they planing on spliting up the SC 2 b.net playerbase in to 3 parts....?

I don't think so. Episodic games aren't anything new. And I don't think Blizzard is getting any inspiration from them either, I'm pretty sure they have other motivations.

It gets worse...

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/13/bl...plan/#comments

Blizzard's Vice President of Game Design Rob Pardo wants us to think about Starcraft 2's two followups, containing the Zerg and Protoss single player campaigns, as expansion packs, so does that mean they won't contain as much gameplay as the Terran-based initial game? Plus, you'll have to wait at least whole year between "expansions." Said Pardo, "With any luck, it would be like a year for each successive one, but that's going to be a target date, that's not a promise."

Since SC2 won't be out until 2009, you won't be able to play the Protoss single player until at least 2011. That's a long time to wait. Check out what Rob said after the break, and start yer speculatin'.

With the announcement about Starcraft 2 being a trilogy, do we know how long it'll be between releases?

We don't know yet, because we don't even know when the first game is getting released yet. I think there's some feeling out there that because we're treating each of the campaigns as almost like separate products, that people have somehow confused that into they're going to be separate products. In a lot of ways, you should think about the follow-ups as being kind of expansion sets to the original. It's just that the campaigns are not going to feel like expansions, they're going to feel like full, independent stories.

So, you know with any luck, it would be like a year for each successive one, but that's going to be a target date, that's not a promise.

Do you know what the pricing on it will be? People are bristling at the thought of having to pay for a game three times.

We would do the retail price based on the value that we're putting in the box. So, if the value in the box is less than the original, then we're going to price it like that. We're not just trying to get people to pay full price for something that's less, if the followups end up having the feature set of an expansion, then that's how they'll get priced.

So now you can't even play as Protoss until 2011 at the earliest. Guess I will be waiting for the box set in 2012

Is that completely clear? I know it says the Protoss single-player campaign won't be out until then but couldn't they have a full 3 race release with the first installment, along with the Terran single-player campaign? Then when the expansions come out, they can add a unit or two for each race like they did with Broodwar.

Is that completely clear? I know it says the Protoss single-player campaign won't be out until then but couldn't they have a full 3 race release with the first installment, along with the Terran single-player campaign? Well, so far they haven't just come out and said that so I wouldn't plan on it.

I remember buying the original starcraft and Oh the disappointment. I really do not understand why it has such a cult following. Now if you want a real RTS try Supreme Commander it far outshines every other rts out there. Less micromanaging and more time for battle plus the Mod community is 2nd to none.

so how does this work with the multiplayer? I could care less about the campaigns. Is the first one going to be just terrans on MP? or is the campaign just going to be terrans and the multiplayer is all 3 races??

I would have guessed the latter, but as Guru pointed out, they don't seem to have been very clear on this. My guess is based on the fact that they specifically mention single player campaigns when they talk about rolling this thing out in 3 installments. To me, that means that the multiplayer will include all three races and that all three races will be enhanced with each "expansion" along with a single player scenario from one of the other two races. But your guess is as good as mine.
