Poor, Poor Me ..... why doesn't anyone like me?

T.O. asks 'Why me?' for media's criticism

IRVING, Texas - Terrell Owens blames the media for portraying him as a selfish player, although he admits a tendency of saying things about others that he wouldn't want said about himself.

In an interview with Bryant Gumbel airing July 18 on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, Owens acknowledges dishing out more criticism than he's willing to take.

"The only thing I can really think of is maybe it was the way I grew up, you know," he said, according to a transcript released to The Associated Press. "I got picked on so much, and it's like I feel like I'm still constantly being picked on."

Owens said he doesn't think reporters are necessarily conspiring against him as much as using him "to gain viewers' attention." As a result, he believes that he is "misunderstood." He said other players have been, too, "but I feel like I have been one of the main guys who've been vilified."

Why?

"That's the million-dollar question," he said. "Why me? ... At some point it does get to me. And I can't say it enough. Dude, I'm human and that's what I'm trying to get people to understand."

Owens also discussed his spat with quarterback Donovan McNabb that eventually led to his release by the Eagles.

As he wrote in a recently released book, Owens said he believes McNabb was jealous of the attention Owens was receiving in Philadelphia and that things boiled over when McNabb cursed at him in a huddle after a play. Owens said he took it as more than something said in the heat of competition.

"When I tried to address that after the game, he blew me off," Owens said. "So, that let me know it's more than just being competitive. It was more than that."

Owens is scheduled to report to his first training camp with the Dallas Cowboys July 28.

He and Barry Bonds are prime examples of what a victim mentality does to people in society....when people use it as an excuse for their own short-comings.

greg63 07-18-2006 10:55 AM

Yeah; it's the medias fault that he doesn't know when to shut his trap. :shake:

May be....but TO does have a point in that he's always been accessible and cordial to the media (opposite of Bonds)....he's never been in trouble with weed or domestic violence (moss and just about any other NFL player)....

Do I think TO is a team player? Absolutely not. Do I think he's an idiot for spouting out whatever's on his mind? Yep.

But Bonds is on a whole different level than TO.

I'm in no way defending TO....but he's no Barry Bonds (or even Ray Lewis for that matter).

Could it be that he has proven the complete inability to learn from his mistakes?

How does one go from claiming to be the best in the league to whining about his fear that someone might pick on him? Seriously, what a puss.

Rausch 07-18-2006 11:11 AM

The really sad thing is I think he's being honest...

ck_IN 07-18-2006 11:53 AM

In his own mind he's being honest.

The sad truth is he's a whiner and can't stand it when people call him on it.

he is a total team player. he gives 150% everytime he is on that field. from catching passes to blocking he is one of the best ever. T.O. is not as bad as the media makes him out to be. he had good reason wanting more money up front. the real problem in philly is donovan and what he makes vs all the other players that get released and have to sign small contracts to come back and play in philly. Terrell just wanted more money up front, not more money. He was worth every penny and if they had paid him then, "its all good"

I always love this logic. Terrell's not bad...he doesnt harm a lockerroom, it's just the media.

Did the media make Terrell do situps in his driveway? Call Garcia gay? Blame McNabb for the SB loss? No, they just gave him the rope, Terrell did the rest.

donovan was the reason they lost. litterly "choking" at the end of the game. terrell almost won mvp being on the losing team. he was amazing after coming off that injury and to do what he did. he called donovan out because he was like well if you dont pay me im outta here. he had to do what he had to do to get out. dont hate the player, hate the game.

TO personifies what is wrong with many of today's US pro sports athletes. Arrogant, greedy guy who has the world laid out in front of him, and can't see. He should be thankful that he has been given an athletic "gift", and lives in a society that happens to worship people who have his "gift". I have zero pity for a tool like TO. Very lucky person, who can only complain and act like a jerk. In my book a complete and utter loser.

LOL...who 'lost' the SB is irrelevant to my point. You said Terrell was a 'total team player' in your previous post, but spent the next few sentences explaining he had to do what he did 'to get paid'.

A total team player doesnt call out team mates, a total team player does not create problems in the locker room.

Your logic is flawed, playa...

pak1983 07-18-2006 01:05 PM

he said donovan bad mouthed him. to risked his career for one game, one chance, and damn near got them there. he is a team player otherwise he wouldnt have played that game.

Gee, I can't think of even 1 other reason why TO would rish his career for "just one game" especially when that game was internationally televised.
