Hochevar trade coming?

So, what's the worst possible scenario?

uhh... we buy out both of Hoch's arbitration years at $9MM/2, with one of those mutual options DM loves for a 3rd year.

We can't be that stupid, though.

alnorth 11-30-2012 06:27 PM

There's no chance we offer a contract at this point, right? Kinda late in the day for that, now. It seems obvious to me that DM is calling everyone in baseball to get Luke out of here.

If there's no deal, just cut him. Please.

DeezNutz 11-30-2012 06:34 PM

Why would we cut him when he's just about to turn the corner and put it all together?

Yeah it wasn't many at-bats, but he's also just not good enough to be patient and hope he figures it out, his defense is worse than Getz his bat was always supposed to carry him, and he hit quite a bit worse than Getz which is incredible considering that he was previously known as Chrisiesky Getzancourt. Maybe Gio will beat him out in spring training.

We have no good option at 2B. Gio doesn't have much of an upside, and Getz is probably capable of repeating his unimpressive sub-par 2012 where he's at least better than replacement value.

I think it is just a sign that there will be no competition and Getz will be allowed to suck out loud with nothing to look over his shoulder at.

It sucks but I could live with that.

Sign/trade for another quality* pitcher, let Myers allow Frenchy to retire after his stellar career, hope Cain stays healthy and we only would gave one hole on the team. 2nd base.

* by quality I'm not talking about what the royals have tried to feed us the last couple years. I would be happy with the gil meche we got when we signed him.

Maybe there is one, but in a trade they'd have to pay a lot of money unless we eat salary. If we cut his ass, maybe Hoch only gets 2 offers for $1MM/1 year

Yeah I'm thinking no one wants to pay him whats left on his contract and anyone interested pretty much knows they can get him for less very soon. If team A is interested but on their own terms and team B steps in and makes a trade in the 11th hour then team A is like "oh well."

CaliforniaChief 11-30-2012 08:28 PM

I shouldn't even say this, but I think he gets non-tendered.

They leaked that it was virtually certain that they wouldn't do that to increase trade interest. They're obviously shopping him for anything, but when push comes to shove, in light of salary constraints and offers to guys like Dempster, I get the idea his days in KC are done.

I hope.

I'll make mine official. Non-tendered at the last minute after trade talks fail. I just think DM is doing everything in his power to get "anything" for him.

If he reached his peak, he'd still be a #3 because of the lack of an out pitch, and I've heard/seen countless bullshit claims about his breaking pitches, 2 and 3. They're both marginal at best.

tk13 11-30-2012 09:09 PM

Dave Duncan isn't there anymore. He would've been a perfect Dave Duncan pitcher. But someone will pick him up if he's cut. He has good stuff and his peripherals are better than his results. That's why DM is Pioli-crazy about keeping him. He doesn't want to some other team to figure him out and make DM look like an idiot.

We've reached the point where I don't care anymore. Maybe he'll have a 3.40 ERA pitching for someone else, I'm done, I want him ****ing gone.

alnorth 11-30-2012 09:14 PM

Rich Gale pitched like the first 4 Royals games I ever went to. That has nothing to do with anything but it popped into my head.

Maybe he's just negotiating which Rookie League Bullpen Coach the Rangers are giving us?

Three7s 11-30-2012 09:41 PM

Glass: Dayton, have you decided on what to do with Hochevar?

DM: No sir, I'm trying to call other teams, but none of them are interested. All of them keep saying that he's not worth anything more than an age 50+ hooker. I have no idea what they mean......

Glass: Well, you gotta make a decision within the next hour or so. Do you still think he has the talent?

DM: I absolutely do! He's a #1 pick for a reason! I just don't understand why teams won't offer. It's not like he's been all that bad, and he has potential!

Glass: Well, I don't know nothing about baseball, so it's all in your hands. Just don't blow too much of my money if you offer a contract.

DM: Don't worry, sir, I'll make sure Hochevar's potential isn't wasted, whether it's here or somewhere else!

Dr. Johnny Fever 11-30-2012 10:03 PM

In all seriousness I really believe something is being worked on with another team for a trade. If all trade possibilitys were dead we'd have either a non tender or a contract. Will a trade happen? Probably not but you use the time you have to try everything. I'm "sure" the decision was made long before now to non tender him if a trade deal can't be made. But until the time has passed you try. Something has to be going on or we'd have known by now.

Behold, the pitching performance of Luke Hochevar, behold, and weep!

2008: 5.51 ERA, 1.473 WHIP, 0.8 HR/9, 3.3 BB/9, 5 K/9, 0.3 WAR
2009: 6.55 ERA, 1.490 WHIP, 1.4 HR/9, 2.9 BB/9, 6.7 K/9, -0.7 WAR
2010: 4.81 ERA, 1.427 WHIP, 0.8 HR/9, 3.2 BB/9, 6.6 K/9, 0.9 WAR (woohoo, high point!)
2011: 4.68 ERA, 1.283 WHIP, 1.0 HR/9, 2.8 BB/9, 5.8 K/9, 0.6 WAR
2012: 5.73 ERA, 1.419 WHIP, 1.3 HR/9, 3.0 BB/9, 7.0 K/9, -1.7WAR (holy God, you suck)

A veritable river of endless suck, bested only by the player whose name is eternally damned: Yuniesky Betancourt.
